PIONEER LOG CABIN COMPANY

Roscommon, Michigan

DISTINCTIVE LOG BUILDINGS * READY CUT * EASY TO ERECT * MODERATE IN COST

LEADERSHIP • .

Demands Constant Achievement

In a country of free enterprise, as we have
inAmerica, he who doesn't move forward to-
ward leadership in his field falls by the way
side.

With our modernization and progress in

log and timber construction you will find the
Pioneer Ready Cut System superior to any
other construction.

The appearance and comfort in our new

plans of cabins or homes cannot be equalled.
Waste space is cut to a minimum. Made of
solid wood for substantiality, and treated
with woodlife* for permanency, this type
of construction is suitable for any climate.

There is nothing that supplants a log home

or cottage; the same applies to commercial
or public buildings. With the economy and
fast method of Ready Cut construction,
completion takes a very short time. This
saves you money and you can be occupying
and enjoying the structure in one-quarter the
time it would take to erect such a building
with other material.

Cordially,

MODERN AND PRACTICAL

THE
WAY TO BUILD A LOG CABIN
In the building of a log cabin, whether for use as a residence, a summer cottage, lodge or as a place of business,
the Pioneer ready-cut system of log construction has proven itself to be the quickest and easiest method that has
ever been devised.

This because, by the Pioneer method, the logs are all cut to uniform size and exact dimensions right at the mill,
is

so that when they are delivered at the building site, there is no tedious work of measuring, sawing and fitting the
pieces during the process of erection.

The logs are cut in winter, when the sap is down, and they are taken directly to the mill where they are turned
in giant lathes to make them straight and of uniform size. This processing removes the bark and sap-wood, giving
the finished logs a smooth, hard surface, and exposing the beautiful, natural grain of the wood.
When the logs have been seasoned for the proper length of time, they are cut to the sizes specified on the blue-
prints of the building into which they are to go. They are then grooved from end to end to receive the "ch inker
strip" — a strip of wood which forms a seal between the logs, taking the place of the old-fashioned plaster or mud
chinking.

The next step is to tongue and groove the ends of the logs so that they will fit tightly into the door frame or window
frame. This done, the "chinker strip" is spiked to each log, which is then lettered and numbered to correspond
to its number on the blueprint and specification sheet.

The window frames and door frames are also made of whole, solid logs, grooved at the side to receive the tongue of
the log butting into it —a type of construction that permits the logs to settle so that the seams always remain tight.

The result is a structure that is not only staunch and sturdy but also unusually easy to erect, all of the parts fitting
together with precision that will amaze you.

The "chinker strip" is made heavy and is so shaped that the

top fits snugly into the groove of the log above it. The bottom
is curved the same as the log on which it rests, and is tongued in
a sealing groove which holds it firmly in place.

An important difference between Pioneer Log Cabins and ordinary

log cabins is that instead or having plaster chinking between the
logs, the Pioneer method employs a wood chinker strip an —
exclusive construction feature found only in Pioneer Log Cabins.
The chinker strip serves not only to space the logs a uniform
distance apart, but also, being tongued and grooved, seals the
joints, making them weather-tight and draft-proof. The result is
a structure of exceptional sturdiness —one that will give years of
service with very little upkeep.

Since untreated wood is subject to attack from fungi and termites,

CEMENT BLOCK the logs are dip-treated in a water-repellent "penta" solution to
greatly extend their service lives.

THE TIMBER CONSTRUCTION *******

WITH THE "SPLINE «s

This new timber construction is manufactured so as to make each

log stand out with its beauty and warmth. The walls are prac-
tically smooth. When finished with Logoil or dull varnish, each
wall is permanently finished and economically kept beautiful.

A variety of room finishes is possible by using plywood paneling

DO
or blocks, consisting of Mahogany, Walnut, Oak, Gum, Birch or
other materials.

Window walls can be incorporated along with other modern and

advanced materials used in construction today.

Roof application is constructed to form the inside ceiling, giving a

studio ceiling effect if desired. Rafters are sturdy timbers, covered
with extra heavy tongue-and-groove sheathing followed with
impregnated insulation board, and can be finished with built-up
asphalt roof or aluminum-foil roofing.

Timber logs are constructed with a spline between the timbers,

2~ x r~*«f«toc.
sealing them against the weather. They are ready-cut, ready to
erect when they leave the factory.

Dimensional changes result in wood exposed to varying weather

conditions. There is no shrinking or swelling of logs and lumber
going into Pioneer Log Cabins because the wood is dip-treated
in a wood preservative, a water-repellent penta solution, prior to
construction of the cabins. CM0S9 - 5Vcr/oV

Treatment takes only a few minutes. The pentachlorophe-

nol, or "penta" for short, and the water-repellent material are
carried into the wood in a light, colorless oil. Soon afterward
the oil vehicle disappears, leaving the water-repellent preserv-
ative in the wood to protect it against the wood destroyers
and moisture. With this safeguard, rain and snow and the
dampness characteristic of a cabin closed for the winter cannot
promote decay. Nor can they cause the wood to expand and
contract with the whims of weather and temperature.

From the standpoint of the builder, treatment of the logs and

other structural members makes construction easier. It keeps
the materials from warping and checking while in transit to
a building site and also while construction is under way during
damp weather.

Thus is "penta" helping another industry — one with its roots

in the forest — make wood, a good building material, still
better.

LOG CABINS
TXII K statement that the first American log
cabin was built by Swedish immigrants on the
Delaware also carries the suggestion that the
first log cabin was erected in this country
approximately 300 years ago. For the Swedish
settlements in the Delaware valley were esta-
blished March 29, 1638.
Such an architectural event deserves some-
thing more than a passing recognition. Be-
cause the log house of the pioneers became
more than a shelter. It became a fortress and
a symbol. Indeed, in some instances it even
became a political insignia that played its part
in National elections, and colored the view-
points of millions of people.
America owes considerable in the way of
gratitude to those who first designed and built
cabins from the boles of the primeval forests,
and nowhere should this gratitude be more
active than in your own State.
Some idea of the extent to which the log
cabin was a home and refuge for early comers
to Michigan may be gained by anyone who
travels the highways of the two peninsulas
and keeps his eyes open.
The old dwellings still remain by the hun-
dreds. Some of them are now deserted, door-
less and even roofless. But others are still
being used as homes and are not without pre-
tentiousness of a sort.
At its best the log cabin was a decidedly
substantial edifice, and those who of late have
been erecting "modern" replicas have been
wise and practical in their generation.
Indeed, the modern log cabin as a charac-
teristic object throughout the country is a
decidedly happy development.
Architecturally attractive, it is remini-
scently pleasant and it has a solidity which
provides a valuable suggestion of permanent
enterprise.
We should thank the early pioneers for
their legacy.
