1. Give the 2 types of organic chemistry.

- There are four main types, or classes, of organic compounds found in all living
things: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. In addition, there are
other organic compounds that may be found in or produced by some organisms

2. What are the different types of organic formula and described each.

3. Why is carbon is the most interesting element in organic chemistry?

- Carbon is the most interesting elements because it has four electrons in its
second orbital, which can accommodate eight, carbon can combine in many
different ways, and it can form very large molecules. Carbon bonds are strong
and can stay together in water. Carbon is such a versatile element that almost 10
million different carbon compounds exist.

4. What is ismorism in organic chemistry?

- In organic chemistry, isomers are molecules with the same molecular formula
(i.e. the same number of atoms of each element), but different structural or
spatial arrangements of the atoms within the molecule.

5. What is hydrocarbon?

- A hydrocarbon is an organic chemical compound composed exclusively of

hydrogen and carbon atoms. Hydrocarbons are naturally-occurring compounds
and form the basis of crude oil, natural gas, coal, and other important energy
sources.

6. Give the two classes of hydrocarbon and described.

- The 2 classes of hydrocarbon are the aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic

hydrocarbons. The Aliphatic hydrocarbons are hydrocarbons based on chains of C
atoms. There are three types of aliphatic hydrocarbons. Alkanes are aliphatic
hydrocarbons with only single covalent bonds. Alkenes are hydrocarbons that
contain at least one C–C double bond, and alkynes are hydrocarbons that contain
a C–C triple bond while the aromatic hydrocarbons, or arenes, are aromatic
organic compounds containing solely carbon and hydrogen atoms. The
configuration of six carbon atoms in aromatic compounds is called a “benzene
ring”, after the simple aromatic compound benzene, or a phenyl group when part
of a larger compound.

7. Give the different functional groups in organic chemistry. Write in table form and
include the general formula, line/structure formula, nomenclature ( prefix or suffix)),
properties and 1 example.

- In organic chemistry, the most common functional groups are carbonyls (C=O),
alcohols (-OH), carboxylic acids (CO2H), esters (CO2R), and amines (NH2). It is

important to be able to recognize the functional groups and the physical and
chemical properties that they afford compounds.
