SECTION 1
READING COMPREHENSION
There are 3 tasks in the Reading Section, in which you can read a series of texts and paragraphs (reviews/adds)
and answer questions that test your reading skills and ability and show that you can read and understand different
types of texts and question formats.
Number of Tasks 3
Number of Items 30
Number of Total Points 30
Types of Texts Descriptive and informational texts, promotional and info materials,
advertisements, letters, etc.
Duration 60 minutes
Task One
Taking your information from the text below, choose the answer which you think fits
best by circling one of the alternatives corresponding to letters A, B, C or D for the
answer you choose.
(1) Are you up for a challenge? We don’t mean a physical challenge, but we are talking about a mental challenge.
It’s time to give your brain a workout! How can you do that? Well, you could, for instance, read or study or do
homework. But, being a student, you do plenty of that already. One of the best ways to give your brain a workout is
doing puzzles.
(2) Do you love puzzles? Today, there are thousands and thousands of different types. From jigsaw puzzles and
Sudoku to crossword puzzles and anagrams, there’s no shortage of brain teasers out there to fill your time. Most
kids love a variety of different kinds of puzzles. They’re just fun to do in your free time. But they can also be very
educational. Puzzles may seem like they’re just for fun, but they got their start as educational tools.
(3) Further back in 1760, a mapmaker from London named John Spilsbury is believed to have created the first
jigsaw puzzle. He fitted one of his handmade maps onto a thin sheet of wood and cut around the borders of the
countries with a saw. The result was an educational tool that he used to help children learn Geography. His
invention caught on and, for the next 60 years or so, people mainly used jigsaw puzzles as educational tools.
Have you ever done a puzzle of the United States where you had to fit all the states into their proper spots? Well,
then, you have done a puzzle similar to the first puzzles invented hundreds of years ago.
(4) Over time, jigsaw puzzles developed into a fun pastime, which progressed beyond just educational value. They
were not just for children; they were a trendy pastime among wealthy adults, too. Made of wood and handcrafted,
only the rich could afford them.
(5) In the late 1800s, cardboard puzzles were first developed. Wooden puzzles continued to be more popular for a
considerable time, but cheaper cardboard puzzles eventually grew in popularity. In the 1920s and 1930s, many
companies began to manufacture a variety of jigsaw puzzles with fascinating artwork. Manufacturers started to
create even more challenging puzzles to appeal to adults and children. They also began to be adopted as
giveaways to introduce citizens to new products.
(6) In 1932, some companies began to produce weekly jigsaw puzzles. What started with a small initial supply
soon grew to hundreds of thousands of new puzzles each week. Although, it was during the Great Depression,
which hit America in the year 1929, when puzzles experienced a high increase in popularity, perhaps because
they provided a lot of entertainment for a small price. When most families could not afford more expensive
recreational activities, jigsaws provided a recyclable form of entertainment. In addition, one could also share jigsaw

puzzles with friends and family members. Some experts believe the process of solving a puzzle may have helped
reduce some of the stress of the Great Depression, too.
(7) Nowadays, people enjoy puzzles as much as they did decades ago. Today’s Covid era sales have beaten
previous records by brands like Ravensburger, one of the top puzzle companies, selling over 28 million puzzles
worldwide in 2020 alone. That translates to sales in the billions of dollars for puzzle companies worldwide. That is
a lot of puzzles! Modern technology has evolved and, with it, so have puzzles. You can do all sorts of puzzles on
smartphones and tablet computers!
