What makes a successful social studies student in the Middle School?

Unsuccessful (UGH!)
Student is habitually late to class, often forgetting or losing required materials - book, writing utensil, assignments, class binder, assignment notebook, etc. Student notebook is usually in disarray or missing. Student frequently needs to be reminded of expectations. Student is unfocused, does not follow directions, and is warned or given a detention for disruptive behavior. Student ignores guidelines and rubrics.
Student is resistant to participate in class, lacks effort during activities, simulations, and class work time and does not raise hand during group discussions. Student detracts from the class with disruptive and negative behavior. Student needs frequent reminders to follows classroom principles and rules. Student exhibits little effort in class. Student rarely asks questions.

Developing (Needs improvement)


At times, student is late to class, often forgetting or losing required materials - book, writing utensil, assignments, class binder, assignment notebook, etc. Student notebook is sometimes in disarray or missing. Student frequently needs to be reminded of expectations. Student is unfocused and finds it difficult to follow directions when they are given. Student rarely consults guidelines and rubrics.
Student is hesitant to participate in class during simulations, class work times and group discussions. Student does not contribute to the class in a positive and constructive manner. Student needs some reminders to follow classroom principles and rules. Student exhibits some effort in class. Student asks questions, but only for repetition or clarification.

Proficient (Nice job)


Student comes to class on time; Student usually has all required materials - book, writing utensil, assignments, class binder, assignment notebook, etc. Student notebook is organized consistently. Student tries to meet expectations, though may need to be reminded. Student sits quietly and follows directions when they are given. Student consults guidelines and rubrics.

Exceptional (Oh Yeah!)


Student comes to class on time with all required materials - book, writing utensil, completed assignments, class binder, assignment notebook, etc. Student notebook is exemplary in organization and detail.

Prepares for class

Listens to and follows directions

Student meets all expectations without being reminded. Student sits quietly and follows directions the first time they are given. Student self-assesses using guidelines and rubrics.
Student is an active participant in class, tries hard during simulations, puts forth effort during class work times and raises hand during group discussions. Student contributes to class in a positive and constructive manner. Student consistently follows classroom principles and rules. Student exhibits exemplary effort in class. Student asks questions for deep understanding and enrichment.

Participates actively and positively in class

Student participates in class when asked during simulations, class work times and group discussions. Student is willing to contribute to the class in a positive and constructive manner when asked. Student consistently follows classroom principles and rules. Student exhibits a lot of effort in class. Student asks questions for both clarification and further understanding.

Develops successful learning habits beyond the classroom

Student demonstrates none of the exceptional learning habits. Student completes few assignments on time. When assignments are completed, student finishes work just to get it done. Student does not demonstrate problem solving skills and has an inconsistent work ethic. Student does not make up missed classwork and assignments. Student does not prepare for tests and quizzes. Student exhibits little effort outside of class.

Student demonstrates few of the exceptional learning habits. Student completes most assignments on time, but sometimes lacks attention to detail or accuracy. Student begins to demonstrate problem solving skills and is developing a solid work ethic. Student is struggling in making up missed classwork and assignments. Student hastily prepares for tests and quizzes at the last minute. Student exhibits some effort outside of class, but more is suggested.

Student demonstrates some of the exceptional learning habits. Student completes almost all assignments on time with attention to accuracy and detail. Student demonstrates problem solving skills and a strong work ethic. Student tries to connect curriculum to the world around them. Student is successful in making up missed classwork and assignments. Student prepares for tests and quizzes. Student exhibits a lot of effort outside of class.

Student utilizes class and home assignments as a learning tool. Student completes all assignments on time with attention to accuracy and detail. Student consistently demonstrates problem solving skills and a strong and consistent work ethic. Student connects curriculum to the world around them. Student is proactive in making up missed classwork and assignments. Student progressively prepares for tests and quizzes. Student exhibits exemplary effort outside of class.
