Reflection 1

What I know about social inequality:

Inequality, the appearance of difference or unfairness, is what dictates the success and

opportunities in our society. I know that social inequality affects your average, everyday person

in more ways than one. From income, whether you’re in “poverty” or not, and the different

challenges, perhaps daily, you may face. To wealth and salaries being impaired due to inequality

starts the never-ending list. Unequal treatment or unfairness is present with post tax incomes and

the benefits each individual receives. What I believe I know about social inequality is vital to the

way to best conduct yourself towards others for a respectful response.

What I’m hoping to learn about social inequality:

I’m hoping to learn how to take steps toward ending social inequality in my city rather

than just talking about it over the course of this class. Being in this class motivates me to do

research on differences in society, and how I can perhaps make a change. I hope that through this

course Dr. Estrella-Luna can open my eyes to those small changes I need to make in myself in

order to be that type of person for the world. I chose this class because I wanted to learn how to

be more of an influencer, with hopes to be involved in dynamic change. I’m hoping that through

this course I can learn why social inequality is such an important topic to discuss. My favorite

way to grow as an individual is by putting my words into action more to attempt to make a

legitimate difference in what is bothering me. I am excited to examine the different ways, small

and big, that social inequality can be addressed or encouraged. I hope to learn in this course how

an inequality begins, where it originates from, or if what we consider “norms” are just simply

generational pass downs. I believe before this class, or even just college frankly, I had limited

knowledge on what social inequality or public policy was. I hope the course of the class teaches
me a broad, full view understanding of present inequality and how it plays a monstrous aspect in

the field of Sociology.

What my concerns or fears are:

I am concerned about the vast perspectives of individuals amongst our class. I believe

everyone is entitled to their own opinions and beliefs; however, I am curious to see if the

different perspectives of beliefs in the society we live will cause debates. I am curious to

examine inequality amongst woman. I always wondered about proximity or location inequality.

As an example, if a pregnant woman must abide by certain policies and regulations in one state

that may not remain the same in another, or the impact the differences in company policies by

state make. I am concerned about how much time it takes to reconstruct and make an inequality

capable of transforming into a form of equity. I am interested in the common steps, procedures or

protocols followed by people in the past to measure, test, or attempt to change the inequality in

our society. My biggest fear while learning about this sensitive topic for most, is that I may learn

something is not changeable.
