    Frieze Patterns

    Frieze pattern is a two-dimensional design that repeats in


    one direction.
    Frieze 1

    The symmetry group 𝐹1 of this pattern has infinitely many


    translation symmetries
    Some of the vectors of the translation symmetries of 𝑂1 are
    indicated in Figure, where the vectors of the translation
    symmetries are all integer multiples of one fixed vector. 2

    The symmetry group of this pattern has reflections


    about horizontal line besides translations along all
    integer multiples of one fixed vector. This group is
    denoted by 𝐹2 .

    The frieze group 𝐹3 consists of the mandatory


    translations, as well as the infinitely many reflections
    with respect to the vertical lines 𝑚1 , 𝑙1 , 𝑚2 , 𝑙2 … .

    The frieze group 𝐹4 consists of translation symmetries


    along integer multiples of a fixed vector and we also
    have glide reflections.

    The frieze group 𝐹5 consists of translations, rotations


    centered at the points A, B, C, …and through the angle
    of 180° are symmetries of this frieze. ,

    On top of the translations, there are rotations and


    reflections. Rotations about the points A, B, C, D, E, F,
    … (extending on both sides) through 180° are all
    symmetries of the object and so is the reflection with
    respect to the horizontal line shown, the frieze group 𝐹6

    In the frieze group 𝐹7 consists of translations, then the


    rotations about certain points through 180°, reflections along
    certain vertical lines, and glide reflections in the horizontal
    direction.

    Used notation to describe the frieze group 𝐹1 as follows:

    , 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠−𝑣 , 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠−2𝑣 , 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠−3𝑣 , … } . Use the notation for
    basic symmetries that we have established earlier to
    describe in a similar fashion the frieze groups 𝐹2 and 𝐹3 .
