1. Introduction

1.1 General

The agreement was signed on the 11 day of May, 2023, between the Gada Special
Economic Zone Development Corporation & Oromia Construction Corporation to carry
out the Drilling, Construction and Pumping Test of 4 (Four) Deep (500 +/- 20%) wells
for the intended Gada Special Economic Zone Development Water Supply Project
around Mojo town in East Shawa Zone of Oromia Regional National State.

Accordingly, the well is designated by a code as GSEZ PW # 02 and was executed

following the terms and conditions outlined in the contract agreement. The contractual
target depth was 500m for the well whereas the actual drilled depth for GSEZ PW # 02
was 500m and the effective depth was 603m, after well camera observation. The well is
drilled with bit sizes of 24’’, 20’’ and 12” TC bit using a mud drilling system.

This well completion report, on top of presenting work activities enumerated in the bill
of quantities, describes the following: Location and accessibility, Drilling methodology,
Machinery and equipment, Drilling history, Borehole hydrogeology, Well Design and
construction, Pump test operation, pump test methodology and data processing, and
finally Water quality analysis

1.2 Location and accessibility

The project area is located in Modjo town, East Shawa Zone of the Oromia Regional
State. It is about 72km away from Finfinnee, along the Old Asphalt Road to Adama. The
drilling site is located approximately 2km from asphalt and is well accessible in all
seasons. Geographically the drilled well is situated at 05136698 m E, 0952094m, N and

1.3 Local Geology & Hydrogeology

Geologically, the area lies under Shallow Alluvial deposit volcanic rocks of weather
pyroclastic and Fracture basalt; Ignimbrite, rhyolite and trachyte are the dominant
geology of the area. Particularly, Tuff (Welded, Unwelded), Trachyte and Rhyolite
which are exposed at the drilling site as well as from the lithological formation collected
during drilling activities. The moderate to high weathered and fractured Ignimbrite,
Trachyte and Scorious Basalt at the depth are the highly potential aquifers for the drilled
well in the area from a hydrogeological point of view.

2. Drilling History

Mobilization of a drilling machine (rig) & an assigned drilling crew to the drilling site
took place on 29-30/09/2015 E.C. The drilling activity commenced on 06/10/2015 E.C
and was completed on 18/2/2016 E.C. The demobilisation from the site took place on

3. Well Logging
3.1. Lithological description

The rock cuttings were collected every 2 meters during drilling and were placed in
labelled sample boxes. These data logging were used to determine the drilling depth,
delineate water-bearing zones, and understand subsurface conditions and position
arrangement of slotted casings based on the result obtained from the logging for casing
arrangements. Table 2 below describes the collected cutting samples along with their
respective depths.

of which 18m are slotted, it was checked during the pumping test but is not functional; it
may be due to gravel inter during packing or the slots blocked by tuff during installation.

4.3. Gravel packing

After the completion of casing installation, the annular space between the wall of the well
and the casing was packed with 45m 3gravel. These gravels are clean, well-rounded grains of
uniform size which range between 9-12mm and they are free from soluble materials.

4.4. Well Development

To remove the mud cake or drilling fluid film that coats the borehole and to increase the
natural porosity and permeability of the formation in the vicinity of the borehole, well
development is carried out. The well developed for about 10 hrs by Surge block, 32 hours by
air compressor, until the water becomes clean and silt/sand free. In addition to that, the well
was developed using one-sided clean water mud pump circulation for 10 hours and

5. Pumping Test Works & Analysis

5.1. Purpose

Pumping tests were conducted to determine the performance characteristics of a well

and the hydraulic parameters of the aquifer. These data, taken under controlled
conditions, give a measure for the productive capacity of the completed well and also
provide the capacity of the computed well provided for the selection of appropriate
pumping equipment.

The second purpose of pumping tests is to provide data from which the principal factors
of aquifer performance transmissibility and storage coefficient can be calculated. This
type of test is called an aquifer test because it is primarily the aquifer characteristics that
are being determined even though the specific capacity of the well can also be
calculated.

Aquifer test will predict:

• The effect of new withdrawals on existing wells,

• The drawdown in the future and different discharges,

• The radius of the cone of influence for individual or multiple wells.

Therefore, the test pumping of the well may be considered as an evolution stage that
includes the estimation of hydro-geologic parameters, redesign and analysis of the well
and the calculation of aquifer and well yield. The aquifer yield concept is essential to
withdrawal that can be allowed without causing a long-term decline in the water table of
the region. Test pumping of wells forms the basis for any groundwater development
strategy in a regional or local hydro-geologic system.

Pumping test serves many important purposes:

• Assessing the design yield of a well or an aquifer,

• Assessing the groundwater quality through sampling,
• Obtaining the information for pump installation level,
• Facilitating maintenance of wells.
5.2. Assigned personnel and Equipment, Materials Used for Testing

A pumping test crew was deployed to undertake the pumping test operation with full
pump testing equipment and accessories. Mobilization of the crane & its equipment
with accessories and assigned crew took place on 22/02/16 E.C. The Pumping test
activity commenced on 22/02/16 E.C. and completed on 25/02/16 E.C. The
demobilization from the site was on 26/02/16 E.C.

5.2.3. Methodology
To produce accurate data, the tests are carried out methodologically by carefully
recording the time, discharge and depth. Continuous test method mainly by constantly
discharging or pumping a single well was applied.

5.3. Pumping Test Operation

The Pumping test of the exploratory borehole at GSEZ PW # 02 was carried out with a
plunger pump having the capacity of discharge 130 l/sec at a head of 100m. The
effective depth of the well is 603m from the measuring point, top of the casing. The
pump was set at an intake position of 124m. The water level during the pumping test
was measured through the observation pipe installed within the casing with an electric
sounder and lightning-deep meter without any hindrance. The discharge was measured
using the 900 V-notch calibrated with the given standard head for corresponding
discharge in the converter table.

5.3.1. Preliminary test

Before the actual continuous pumping test commencement, the preliminary test was
conducted for two hours with a discharge rate of 109 l/sec. During this time the water
level dropped from 00m to 34.4.m and a total drawdown of 17.15m was measured in the
borehole. Accordingly, after deciding on the appropriate pump type, pipe diameter and
pump setting depth, the crew completed the installation works to start with the pumping
test. The static water level of the borehole is originally at 17.25Meters

5.3.2. Constant discharge test

The constant discharge test was commenced on 30/02/2016EC and completed on

25/02/2016EC. The test was carried out with an average discharge rate of 101.45 l/sec
for a total duration of 72 hours pumping without interruption by installing the pump at
124 m meter depth within the blind casing. During the pumping period, the water level
is stabilized at 43.30m. The final drawdown of the well was 25.37m.

5.3.3. Recovery test

Right after the stoppage of the constant pumping test recovery test was carried out, It
was preceded by measuring and recording the rebounding water level (RWL) with a
similar time interval applied for the constant rate test until the maximum percentage of
recovery was achieved. The analysis of the recovery test can also be used as a relative
comparison of the hydraulic parameters obtained through constant tests. The static water
level is 17.93m and the dynamic water level is 43.30 m. The final water level after a
300-minute recovery is 24.63 meters. The recovery result shows that the water level
recovered by 73.59 % in 360 minutes. The graph of the recovery test is presented in Fig.
6 below and the data in annexed.

5.3.4. Analysis of Pumping & Recovery Tests

Data analysis and graphical presentation of the constant rate and recovery test have also
been prepared using aquifer test software, using Jacob’s linear analysis method.

5.3.4.1. Specific Capacity (Sc)

Sc= Q/Sw, where Q = pumping rate = 101.45 l/sec

Sw= total drawdown in the well = 25.37m
Sc= Q/Sw=101.45*4320/25.37 = 3.998 l/s
Thus, 239.9 l/min (3.998*60) can be pumped per one meter of drawdown (water level
fall) from the well.

5.3.4.2. Safe yield (Sy)

This will be calculated considering factors, which affect the available water column,
such as

- Static Water Level

- Available Drow Down
- Pump Position
- Dynamic Water Level
- Total Drow Down Depth

- aquifer productivity through time

Seasonal water fluctuation will have positive effect on the available water column. The
screens are considered to be fully slotted and are not in a position to clog the free
entrance of water. The pump is assumed to be 100% efficient for simplicity in this case
at 125m. Well development inaccuracies and aquifer productivity through time are
included in the safety factor, which is considered to be 50%.

In Case of Our Well

Available (ADD)= 124m

Static Water Level= 17.93m

Pump Position =124m

Dynamic Water Level =43.30m

Drow Down= 25.37m

Discharge of pumping Rate (Q=101.45 l/s) (0.10145m3/s)

SC=Q* Total Pumping Test in min/ DD,

SC= 101.45*4320/25.37 = 900.5425 m3/d/m for Three days

SC=300.18 m3/d/m

SC=300.18 M3/d/m

Safe Yield = NADD*SC*Safety Factor (0.50)

Safe Yield= 15009m3/d Sy= 0.17371528m3/sec.

SY =174 lit/sec which is rearly Double of the pumping rate considered during the
conducted pumping test. Thus, the well can yield 174 lit/sec for the designed purpose.

6. Grouting and Well Head Construction

1.4 Grouting
After the completion of well development and pumping test works, all measure was
taken to prevent the entrance of foreign material into to well. The annular space
between the borehole wall and the production casing was grouted with mixed cement
grout to prevent any surface/external pollutants from flowing into the well.

1.5 Well Head Construction

The final part of the well construction is the wellhead construction. The well head was
done according to the specified design in fact to protect the stick up above ground from
breakage and movement during pump installation including capping of piezometers.
Special care is taken for the mixing ratio and quality of sand, water, cement and
aggregate used for the construction of the wellhead with 1m x 1m x 1.25m dimension.

7. Well Camera
Both screened and blind casings positions were briefly observed from top to bottom by
slowly moving the camera downwards. Consequently, all casings were observed and
cross-checked with the initial arrangement made between the previous and current
casing positions, the average inconsistency observed is -0.85, see Table 9 below.

The total drilled depth is 603m, and also cased depth is 64.3m with 1.3m stickup above
ground level for sanitary purposes, The actual depth recorded by the well camera video
image is 602.224m because the bottom 0.78m is filled by backfill. No foreign material
is observed and the well is free from defects except the bottom 0.78m part backfilled.

8. Water Sampling & Quality Analysis

8.1. Water Sampling

Water samples for chemical analysis were collected After 24hrs, 48hrs and at the end of
the constant pumping test (72hrs) were taken for a laboratory (Physic-chemical)
analysis as specified in the BOQ and taken to a laboratory for the physicochemical
analysis.

8.2. On-Site Physical Analysis

The physical inspection of the water flowing out of the well during the pumping period
revealed that the water from the well is odourless, tasteless and colourless. Water
samples were collected in 2-litre plastic bottles after 24hrs, 48hrs and at the end of the
constant pumping test.

8.3. Laboratory Analysis

The chemical analysis result of all Chemical constituents is compared with the World
Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standard. In general, the chemical quality of
the well water is fit to Ethiopian standards for household uses and WHO. Check the
result of the laboratory analysis and summary of the interpretation of the chemical
analysis as follows: -
The chemical analysis result of the water sample collected during the pumping test
shows that the water of the well is chemically Na-Ca-HCO3(as per ECDSWC lab reslt)
and Na-HCO3( as per ECO lab result) types.

11. Conclusion and Recommendation

 The well was drilled both with Ø of 24” drilling bit up to 30 m and cased with 22” Ø
surface Casing in the upper part of loose materials to protect against collapse & 20” Ø of
drilling bit from 30 – 250 and the remaining up to 603m drilled by 12 inches, and then
cased with 12’’and 8” Ø production casing by proper well design based on the lithological
and electrical logging.
 The main aquifer is highly fractured and weathered ignimbrite, Trachy basalt and
Scoriaceous basalt
 6-9 mm of well-rounded & clean and free from sand & silt was packed in the annular
space between the wall of the well and production casing and the well was developed &
cleaned for sufficient time and to the satisfaction of the hydro geologist/site supervisor.
 Constant Pumping test operation was conducted for 72 hours with a discharge rate
of 101.45 lit/sec at a pump position of 124 m.
 In general, the value of the aquifer parameters shows that the area has high groundwater
potential; the chemical quality of the well water is permissible for drinking purposes.
 It would be good if the area were protected as a well field to minimize the problem of the
water supply of the area and to protect groundwater fluctuation of the area by conducting
groundwater flow modelling and using it as a tool for groundwater management.

 To get the most possible discharge, it is recommended to put the operational

submersible pumps at a depth of 124 m by a pump which able to extract 174 lit/s.
