CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Allium is the genus that includes onions, rakkyo (an Asian onion),

scallions,

chive, leeks, and shallots. Garlic is closely related to all of these plants. Since

thousands of years ago, people have utilized it for both culinary and health and

therapeutic purposes, and Ancient Egypt was one of its most renowned users.

Pesticides are used to control various pests and disease carriers, such as

mosquitoes, ticks, rats and mice. It is used in agriculture to control weeds, insect

infestation and diseases. It is mostly used in agriculture and in households and

they help farmers grow more food on less land by protecting crops from pests,

diseases and weeds. Pesticides kill pest by acting upon the insect's nervous

system (e.g., cholinesterase inhibition). (United States Environmental protection

Agency) without pesticide, more than half of the world's crops would be lost to

insects, diseases and weeds and therefore plants will have difficulty growing

without protection from pest. In agriculture, a majority of farmers use

pesticide/insecticides with harmful chemicals, but overuse of this kind of

pesticide/insecticide, can cause harm to most of the plants that this pesticide was

used on, can pollute streams, ponds, lakes, and wells and can cause health

effects include stinging eyes, rashes, blisters, blindness, nausea, dizziness,

diarrhea and even death. Garlic (Allium Sativum) is a herb growing from a

strongly aromatic, rounded bulb composed of around 10 to 20 cloves covered in

a papery coat. Its ability to fight bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even parasites is the

perfect example for an organic pesticide/insecticide. Organic pesticides will help

lessen the usage of harmful chemicals and would lessen GHG

emissions/Greenhouse gasses. While organic pesticides are typically viewed as

safer alternatives to synthetic pesticides, this is not always the case. It is

essential that you read the label to determine the toxicity of each pesticide you

use. Both natural and synthetic pesticides are effective at controlling pests.

However it is safer to use organic pesticide because it has less harmful

chemicals than the synthetic pesticide. Using organic pesticide or garlic pesticide

can help lessen the sickness caused by the synthetic ones, and will be more

cheaper than those with chemicals. (Lago, 2023)

One of the best activities for reducing stress and connecting with nature

is gardening. The issue is that growing plants can occasionally cause new types

of stress, such as bugs. Gardeners have a wide range of alternatives available to

them when it comes to successful pest control, from letting nature take its course

to introducing predatory species that can assist reduce pest load. Many people

opt to use pesticides and insecticides, whether they are organic or more potent

chemical remedies. Spraying may be the only method left to save the plant when

pest pressure is at its greatest. Spraying for bugs doesn’t have to mean handling

toxic chemicals. Natural products, such as garlic essential oil, can be helpful

tools for dealing with pest pressure in a nontoxic way. If spraying plants with

plant juice to save them from hungry bugs sounds like a questionable practice,

keep reading. We’ll explore the effectiveness of garlic insecticide and identify

what pests garlic spray might help keep away. (Wolfe, 2023)

METHODOLOGY

Presented in this chapter are the research materials, research locale, and

research procedure.

Research Materials:

 1.85 grams of chopped or crushed garlic

 2.50 ml of mineral oil (vegetable oil)

 10 ml of liquid dish soap

 950 ml of water

 Strainer

 Container Spray

Research Procedure

 First, gather all the included ingredients.

 Next, start by finely chopping or crushing the garlic. You can use a garlic

press or a knife for this step.

 Allow the garlic and oil mixture to sit for at least 24 hours. This allows time

for the garlic to infuse into the oil, creating a concentrated solution.

 In a small bowl or container, combine the chopped or crushed garlic with

50 ml of mineral oil (or vegetable oil). The oil helps extract the active

compounds from the garlic and makes the solution more effective.

 After 24 hours, strain the garlic and oil mixture using a strainer. This will

separate the liquid from the solid garlic pieces. You can discard the solid

garlic pieces or use them for cooking

 In a separate container, mix 10 ml of liquid dish soap with 950 ml of water.

The dish soap acts as a surfactant, helping the garlic oil solution to plant

surfaces and pests.

 Combine the strained garlic-infused oil with the soapy water mixture. Stir

gently to mix the two solutions thoroughly.

 Your homemade garlic oil pesticide is ready to use. Pour it into a spray

bottle for easy application. Be sure to shake the bottle before each use to

ensure the oil and water are well-mixed.

 To use the garlic oil pesticide, spray it directly on the plants affected by

pests. Pay special attention to the undersides of leaves where many pests

hide.

 Lastly repeat the application every 7-10 days or as needed until the pest

problem is under control.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents methodology used in the study.

A. Research Design

The experimental method was used in the study whereas; the

experimental method is systematic and scientific approach to research in

which the researchers manipulates variables, controls and measures any

change in one variable. The treatment were applied in the different volume of

garlic extract and tap was used as the control. The researchers conducted

experiment of the efficacy of Garlic then extract as an insecticide to kill

bugs of the vegetables.
