Volume of a prism V = Ah where A is the area of a cross-section and h is the perpendicular

9. (a) Solve the pair of simultaneous equations

(b) (i) Express y = x 2 - 3x - 12 in the form y = (x - h)2 + k, where h and k are


constants. ( 3 marks)

(ii) Hence determine the minimum value of the function y = x2 - 3x - 12.

(iii) Calculate, correct to one decimal place, the roots of the equation
x 2 - 3x- 12 =0. ( 3 marks)

(c) Sketch the graph of y = x2 - 3x - 12, showing clearly:

(i) the value of x where the function is a minimum ( 1 mark )

(ii) the x-intercepts ( 2 marks)
