COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
AUTHOR’S BACKGROUND
Who is William Shakespeare?
William Shakespeare (26 April 1564
(baptized) – 23 April 1616) was an English poet,
playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest
writer in the English language and the world’s pre-
eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national
poet and the “Bard of Avon”. His extant works, including
some collaborations, consist of around38 plays, 154
sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other
verses, of which the authorship of some is uncertain.
His plays have been translated into every major living
language and are performed more often than those of
any other playwright.
Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early
plays were mainly comedies and histories and these works remain regarded as some of
the best work produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about
1608, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest
works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as
romances, and collaborated with other playwrights.
Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his
lifetime. In 1623, John Heminges andHenry Condell, two friends and fellow actors of
Shakespeare, published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that
included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare’s. It was prefaced with
a poem by Ben Jonson, in which Shakespeare is hailed, presciently, as “not of an age,
but for all time”. In the 20th and 21st centuries, his work has been repeatedly adopted
and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain
highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse
cultural and political contexts throughout the world.

Literary theory
Historical approach "As you like it" By William Shakespeare was written in 1599. His
work reflects the language, beliefs and traditions of the people during this era. It
emphasizes the primogeniture culture of a certain period.
Primogeniture is an inheritance rule that assigns the entire family estate to the first-
born son. It was most typical among feudal nobility. Primogeniture reflects in the
context when Oliver holds all the estates and fortune from his father including the part
that was belong to his other siblings.

him would be fun.
Point of view:
First person

Theme:
Being contended to the things you have and the place where you at in your life.
Literary theory:
Moralist Approach
The scene emphasizes the hypocrisy. There is a moral law in the ten
commandments, law number five that "You shall not kill". However; killing animals
is no difference of killing humans. The worst thing is animals couldn't defend
themselves nor save their life. In connection with the context, Lord Jacque was
felt sorry for the lives of the native animals in the forest of Arden that were killed
for food. In creating a rule, policy or law it is necessary to consider everything.
Avoid being bias because it may be an advantage to someone but may be a
disadvantage to someone else too. Hence, be fair and just.

EXPOSITION:
After Rosalind and Celia went to the Forest of

the man with bells on his hats who entertains the Duke
with his various skills. Duke Frederick is looking for his https://youtu.be/Y1frdtY2OCs
jester, he have this conclusion that touchstone is with the two girls.
RISING ACTION:
Suddenly, a lord told him that he heard that Rosalind and Celia approached and congratulate
Orland for winning the wrestling, then the Duke again jump with the conclusion of maybe Rosalind,
Celia and Touchstone is with Orlando. He harshly summon the brother or Orlando, Oliver and asks
where his brother.
CLIMAX:
He threatens Oliver that if he not find his brother dead or alive within twelve months he will not be
able to return again in the dukedom. Oliver said that he did not know where his brother is and at least
once in his whole life he did not love his brother. Duke Frederick unmoved by what he said and
continued his desire to find his brother he even called Oliver a villain because of what he felt for his
brother which is also a very similar rivalry between him and his brother Duke Senior.
FALLING ACTION:
The Duke command his men to make sure that Oliver will leave the dukedom to find his brother
Orlando and return after twelve months.
CONFLICT:
Duke Frederick is looking for his jester, Touchstone which is nowhere to be found.
RESOLUTION:
Duke Frederick summon Oliver, to find his brother Orlando.
POINT OF VIEW:
Shakespeare used a first point of view in As you Like It. The characters are the one who is
narrating or performing the story.
THEME:
The theme of the plot is family rivalry between Oliver and his brother Orlando, and Duke
Frederick with his niece Rosalind.
SHORT SUMMARY:
Duke Frederick cannot find his jester Touchstone, so he called Oliver to follow and find his
brother Orlando because he believes that he is with Rosalind and Celia who will lead him to find his
jester.
LITERARY THEORY: Marxism Literary Theory
EXPLANATION:
Marxism literary theory is used in plot III; scene II. The author emphasized the character’s
oppression to those who stands in his way. Frederick is the Duke of the palace after he over throne
his brother Duke Senior. He is not just the only one who exiled in the Forest of Ardenne by Duke
Frederick but also Rosalind because he can’t accept the fact that Rosalind and Orlando, the children
of his enemies are starting to love each other.
The author also indicate that the antagonist (Duke Frederick) ignored the reason why his jester
decided to accompanied Rosalind and Celia to the forest and chose to blame his anger to Oliver
whom he order to find Orlando because he believes that Orlando will lead him to Rosalind with
Touchstone.
Scene II “Enter Duke Frederick, Lords, and Oliver” arrays social conflict between the
protagonist and antagonist in a result of oppressing the people of the dukedom by their powerful
Duke. Like the Marxists generally view literature "not as works created in accordance with timeless
artistic criteria, but as 'products' of the economic and ideological determinants specific to that era"
(Abrams 149).
EXPLANATION OF THE TITLE OF THE STORY:
Enter Duke Frederick, Lords and Oliver is the title because they are the primary key to find his
jester.
P L O T #3: Scene 2
TITLE OF THE PLOT: Enter Orlando, with a paper.
DESCRIPTION:
SETTING: Forest of Ardenne
CHARACTER: Oliver, Orlando, Rosalind as Ganymede,
Celia as Aliena, touchstone and Corin.
EXPOSITION:
While Oliver is frustrated of finding his brother, little did
they know that Orlando also feels the same way as his
brother because he is looking for his Rosalind. He did not
know where and how to find her so he started to write
poems on a paper expressing his undying love for Rosalind
then hanged it on the tree branches, hoping that she will
https://youtu.be/Y1frdtY2OCs
see one of his poems.
RISING ACTION:
Meanwhile, when Corin and Touchstone are walking they saw a paper on the trees so they read
it. Touchstone find the letters interesting but a bit more exaggerating because of how the writer
describes his lover. As they read further, Corin and Touchstone talk about how the life is different in
the country side from court house.
CLIMAX:
Suddenly, Rosalind disguised a man named Ganymede and Celia as a young woman Aliena
arrived. Celia also read the letter and agreed to what Touchstone said about it. She told Rosalind
that she know who wrote the poems for her. Rosalind is going to ask Celia, but then Orlando
appeared. He did not recognized his lover because she is dressed like a man.
FALLING ACTION:
Ganymede who is happened to be Rosalind have the opportunity to ask Orlando herself about
his love for her. She offered him to show how silly women are and cure the love sickness that he is
experiencing if he will come to the cot and if he will pretend that the man he is talking with, is his lover
Rosalind. After a long convincing talk, Orlando finally agrees with all his heart.
CONFLICT:
Orlando is looking for his lover Rosalind.
RESOLUTION:
Orlando made love letters or poems and hang it on the tree branches so Rosalind will see how
he love her.
POINT OF VIEW:
Shakespeare used a first point of view in As you Like It. The characters are the one who is
narrating or performing the story.
THEME:
The theme of the plot is Comedy in terms of the mockery of Orlando’s letters to Rosalind and
Romance between the two characters Rosalind and Orlando.
SHORT SUMMARY:
Orlando wants to show his undying love to Rosalinda but he did not know where to find her, so
he let his written poems speak for his love to her then hanged it on the tree. Rosalind found the
poems but she is in disguised so she introduce herself to Orlando as Ganymede a young man and
offers to cure his love sickness for Rosalind which happens to be her.
LITERARY THEORY: Feminist Criticism Theory
EXPLANATION:
Plot III; Scene II portrays the theory of Feminist Criticism by showing how Rosalind cross
dressed as a man as Ganymede. Based on this scenario, Shakespeare wants to impart to us that
we are the ones who will choose what masks, what sexuality, and what behavior we will have in a
specific or different places, situations, and people. In addition, we therefore conclude that he adores
women because of how their minds and experiences in life works, they can be adaptive in any ball
game. Just like the cross dressing of Rosalind from woman to a man.
But the fact that Orlando is obliviously did not recognized her lover Rosalind because the way
he dressed as Ganymede, may represent the author’s perspective about men who is in love are
oblivious to their surroundings.
Rosalind’s disguising scenario is not uncommon as we would think it is. In those days or in that
particular era 1599 and in the 15th century where Laura Cereta published Epistolae familiars volume
1488: Collected Letters of a Renaissance Feminist which addressing the collection of oppression in
women and giddiness about women’s clothing. To the same extent to Rosalind’s situation, many
women who were dominated by men and had to leave the place to transfer somewhere else would
disguise themselves as males to avoid perplexity.
EXPLANATION OF THE TITLE OF THE STORY:
Plot III: Scene II entitled Enter Orlando, with a paper. It emphasized Orlando will do everything
just to make Rosalind feel how he cherished her, even if it means writing a poems of his undying love
on a tree.
