36. In the month of April to June 2022, the exports of passenger cars from India increased by 26% in the
corresponding quarter of 2021–22, as per a report. A car manufacturing company planned to produce 1800

SECTION C
Q.26 Let us assume, to the contrary, that √ 5 is rational. That is, we can find
a
integers a and b (≠ 0) such that √ 5 = ⋅ , and assume that a and b are
b
coprime. 1
So,√ 5 b = a
we get 5b2 = 25a2, that is, b2 = 5a2. This means that b2 is divisible by 5, and so
b is also divisible by 5 (using Theorem 1.3 with p = 5). Therefore, a and b
have at least 5 as a common factor. But this contradicts the fact that a and b
are coprime. This contradiction has arisen because of our incorrect
assumption that √ 5 is rational. So, we conclude that √ 5 is irrational.
