This is Beethoven’s only opera. Fidelio is the male name assumed by
Leonore when she disguises herself in order to rescue her husband,
Florestan, from death at the hands of the evil prison governor, Piz-
zaro. She thwarts Pizzaro at the last minute before the arrival of Don
Fernando, the Minister of State, and in the final scene Florestan and all
the prisoners are freed.
