CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Home-based parental involvement behaviors refer to non-formal

learning and teaching practices that occur at home (Yotyodying & Wild,

2016). According to research on child development, the household serves

as a crucial learning support (Arriero, 2016). When kids have the chance

to learn from their two main contexts of development—their homes and

schools—they do better in school (Nierva, 2019).

Guro (2022) claims that fewer students are enrolled at San Felipe

Elementary School in the current academic year than there were in the

previous one. As the quarter progresses, the number of students

continues to decline. Teachers thought that parents' involvement at home

was crucial to pupils' intrinsic motivation for learning. One of the elements

that the teachers at the aforementioned school observe is the parents'

assistance at home.

Academic success will be the consequence of good collaboration

between parents, teachers, and schools. The parental involvement refers

2

to the amount of participation a parent has when it comes to the

schooling of his/her children. Some schools foster healthy parental

involvement, but sometimes parents have hesitations if they will involve

themselves with their children's education. It has been advocated in

Western countries (Bartolome et al., 2017).

According to Waterford (2022), family engagement describes a

situation in which families and teachers share the responsibility to help

students reach their academic goals. It happens when families commit to

making their child’s education a priority, and teachers commit to listening

and collaborating with families. It helps students to be more efficient and

effective in their schools.

According to the study of Ugwuegbulem (2018), the ultimate

motivation parents had in sending their children to school was to achieve

an upward social and economic mobility for their families’ overall well-

being. GPE Secretariat (2018) that even though the role of a parent in

their children’s education evolves as children get older, it’s important to

remember that parents remain role models. There are many studies

which indicacted strong influence of parental involvement on their

children’s motivation (Muola,2017 & Hoang,2018). However, in the study

3

of Diagan (2014) concluded that the parental involvement does not

significantly affect the intrinsic motivation of their children.

Research on home-based parental involvement and academic

intrinsic motivation can be found both internationally and locally.

However, studies on this topic are still thriving, especially in the locality of

Davao Occidental, where no similar study has been published yet.

Therefore, the researchers found the need to conduct this study, which

will look into the relationship between home-based parental involvement

and academic intrinsic motivation of the pupils.

4

Objectives of the Study

This study aimed to determine the relationship between home-

based parental involvement and academic intrinsic motivation of Grade 6

parents of San Felipe Elementary School.

Specifically, it aimed to:

1. Determine the demographic profile of the parents in terms of:

1.1 age;

1.2 relationship to the pupils; and

1.3 educational attainment

2. Determine the demographic profile of the pupils in terms of :

2.1 Gender; and

2.2 Age.

3. Determine the level of home-based parental involvement of parents;

4. Determine the level of academic intrinsic motivation of children in

terms of:

4.1 challenge;

4.2 curiosity; and

4.3 independent mastery

5

5. Determine the relationship between home-based parental

involvement and academic intrinsic motivation of the pupils.

Significance of the study

This study, which in of a quantitative nature, will provide

information on the results that can be advantages to individuals as well as

stakeholders. The aim is to achieve the objectives of the study, which in

can be beneficial for everyone involved.

Department of Education (DEPED)

This study will provide valuable information and data that will assist

the Department of Education in better understanding and enhancing

parental involvement in their children's studies. With these insights, the

department can develop targeted strategies and initiatives to foster a

stronger and more supportive partnership between parents and the

educational system.
6

School Heads/Principal

This study will provide valuable information about the relationship

between home-based parental involvement and academic intrinsic

motivation of pupils. Consequently, it will benefit the school head of San

Felipe Elementary School by offering insights that can be utilized to

strengthen the collaboration between parents and the school community,

leading to enhanced academic outcomes and a more conducive learning

environment.

San Felipe Elementary School (TES)

The data provided will empower the teachers and stakeholders of

San Felipe Elementary School to enhance and sustain parental

involvement in their children's education, while also bolstering the pupils'

intrinsic motivation. Consequently, San Felipe Elementary School should

consider implementing projects and programs that foster stronger

collaboration between the school and parents to enhance student learning

motivation.
7

Teachers

This study will enable them to recognize and evaluate parents'

opinions on their involvement in their children's academics. Consequently,

the findings will serve as a basis for implementing methods to enhance

students' academic performance and foster increased parental cooperation

in their children's studies.

Parents

This study will help the parents to empower them with knowledge,

strengthen their role in their child's education, and foster a supportive and

motivating home environment. By understanding the importance of their

involvement, parents can contribute significantly to their child's academic

success and overall well-being.

Students

Students will greatly benefit from the study's findings as they will

enhance their awareness of the positive impact of home-based parental

involvement and intrinsic motivation on their academic journey. By

recognizing the support and guidance of their parents, students can be

8

inspired to take an active role in their education and strive for academic

excellence and personal growth.

The Future Researchers

The significance of this study extends beyond its immediate

findings, serving as a catalyst for future researchers to delve deeper into

the vital link between home-based parental involvement and academic

intrinsic motivation. By paving the way for further exploration, replication,

and in-depth investigation, this research creates a solid platform for

fostering continuous inquiry and advancing knowledge in the field of

education.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will be limited to the relationship between home-based

parental involvement and academic intrinsic motivation of Grade 6 pupils.

This study will be conducted to (49) forty- nine students and their parents

of Grade 6 from San Felipe Elementary School at Brgy. Tabayon, Jose

Abad Santos, Davao Occidental for the academic year 2022- 2023.

The data gathering is limited to the following parameters: the

demographic profile of the parents-respondents in terms of age,

9

relationship to the students and educational attainment; the demographic

profile of the Grade 6 pupils in terms of gender and age.

The study will utilize an adapted survey questionnaire to assess two

key aspects: the level of home-based parental involvement among

parents, which is based on Perolino's (2006) work as cited in Tumandan

(2015), and the level of academic intrinsic motivation, specifically in terms

of challenge, curiosity, and independent mastery, as developed by Lepper,

Corpus, and Iyengar (2005). The questionnaire is answerable using a five

point Likert scale with the following response: Always, Often, Sometimes,

Seldom, Never. The study will be conducted during the school year 2022-

2023.

Definition of Terms

To make this study clear and comprehensive, the following terms

are operationally defined:

6 pupils to do something without relying on any external forces.

10

Challenge. It refers to Grade 6 pupils of San Felipe Elementary School

who were motivated to do something because the activity or

schoolwork is challenging.
