Evoke something: to bring a feeling, a memory or an image into your mind.
The music evoked memories of her youth. Trade: a particular type of business. The building/food/tourist trade. Keenly: in a way that involves strong or deep feelings or awareness. We were keenly aware of the danger. Be burdened with something: to be carrying something heavy. She got off the bus, burdened with two heavy suitcases. Look down on somebody: to think that you are better than somebody. She looks down on people who haven't been to college. Belie something: to give a false impression of somebody/something. My calm exterior belies my deep inner fear. Wince (at something): to suddenly make an expression with your face that shows that you are embarrassed or feeling pain. I still wince when I think about that stupid thing I said. Budge: to move slightly; to make something/somebody move slightly. She pushed at the door but it wouldn't budge. Budge (on/from something): to change your opinion about something; to make somebody change their opinion. He won't budge an inch on the issue / Company executives refused to budge from their position. Block out: to stop yourself from thinking about or remembering something unpleasant Over the years she had tried to block out that part of her life. Sort something out: to organize the contents of something / to organize something successfully. If he can't get his talk sorted out, we'll have to ask someone else. Sort something out (from something): to separate something from a larger group Could you sort out the toys that can be thrown away? Steer something + adv. /prep.: to take control of a situation and influence the way in which it develops. He managed to steer the conversation away from his divorce. Hone (something): to develop and improve something, especially a skill, over a period of time She honed her debating skills at college. Envision something: to imagine what a situation will be like in the future, especially a situation you intend to work towards. If you can envision your goals, you can achieve those goals. A watered-down speech, piece of writing, etc. is changed in order to make it less strong or offensive. Rooted in something: developing from or being strongly influenced by something His problems are deeply rooted in his childhood experiences. Inconceivably: in a way that is impossible to imagine or believe She was inconceivably wealthy. Cling: to hold on tightly to somebody/something. Cling to somebody/something survivors clinging to a raft.
