PROJECT :
TITLE: Checking adequacy of Drain Section – For Drain on Western Plant Boundary
Scope
As per cl. no. 9.01.00, Chaper C0, Section VI of NTPC specification for Storm Water Pumping System Package,
Document No. CS-4230-127-2, the following calculation has been made to check the capacity of the existing
surface drain on the Western Side of the plant for the modified site condition. The drain has been
checked for the assumed catchment area for which it is supposed to cater for. The area calculation
is based on the available drawings which give limited information and rest on pure assumption.
Introduction
This calculation is for the surface drain which runs along the western side boundary wall. It is
assumed that the catchment area for each stretch of drain is sum of the area between boundary
wall and the drain and 50% of the area between the next drain. The catchment area is broadly
classified as paved area, non-paved area and road surfaces which give different run-off co-efficients
for total run-off calculation. Near Cooling Tower area as the pipe drain is existing by the side of
plant road. The existing surface drain on East and South side of Cooling Tower is also connected to
the existing pipe drain. Therefore, the run-off collected in this area will be catered by this pipe drain and
the area between boundary wall and 50% of plant road will be catered by surface drain. In other
area where pipe drain is coming by the side of the surface drain, only the area between next drain
and pipe drain which includes surface drain shall be catered by it and rest will be served by pipe
drain.

Calculation of discharge ( Q ) at various points :
Now putting these discharge and adding them algebrically considering the flow as shown in the
sketch, we have the discharge at various drainage points as follows -
Drain - 1
This contains the catchment areas A1 to A10 + A15 = 6.147 cumec
Drain - 2
This contains the catchment areas A16 to A21 + 10mX10m = 7.176 cumec
area from coal stock yard
Note : Existing main drain in stock yard is bent towards East side and is not connected to this Drain-2.
Drain - 3
This contains the catchment areas of Drain-2 + A22 = 7.719 cumec
Drain - 4
2 Nos. RCC pipes (1-1200φ + 1-1400φ) will be placed at the bend before Drain point-4 to cross the N-S Road.
These pipes will run along the surface drain from Drain Point-7 upto Point-8, where they will join the modified drain
section. These pipes will transfer part of discharge in drain-4 to Drain-8, thereby relieving Drain-5 and the
existing 2-1800 dia. pipes around Cooling Tower.
Discharge to be carried by Drain-4 is restricted by the two existing 2-1800φ pipes in downstream.
Discharge carried by the pipes during peak flow, with limiting velocity of 2.4m/sec, is as follows:
Hence, discharge at Drain-4 contains the catchment areas of Drain-3 3.973 cumec
+ A25 + A26 - Discharge carried by new pipe drain =
Drain - 5
This contains the catchment areas of Drain-4 + A23 + A24 +
A27 to A29 = 8.955 cumec
As road is coming in between surface drain and manhole, we have considered that no rain water
from cooling tower area be will be coming to surface drain.

Conclusion
From above calculation based on rainfall intensity of 125mm/hour and increased run-off coefficients,
we conclude the following:
1) Drain point 1 to 4 are found adequate and will not require any modification.
2) In Drain - 5 and in the existing underground pipe drains connected thereto, the discharge velocity was initially
found higher (Vide Rev. 0 of the Design Calculation). Hence part of discharge in this drain is diverted from here
by laying 1-1200φ + 1-1400φ pipe below road near Silo area. These pipes will run beside the surface drain and will
carry the extra discharge upto the West side boundary wall. Then the pipe will be connected to existing surface
drain alongside boundary wall, which will be modified as required by this calculation.
3) Drains along rail track are found to be adequate to carry the discharge from their respective catchment area.
Therefore, no modification required.
4) Following are the modification plans :
a) Drain on West side of Cooling Tower and beside the boundary wall will be widened to 3300mm and depth will
be modified, as shown in drawing.
b) For the stretch, where the drain is located away from boundary wall (e.g. North & South side of Cooling Tower
and near SWPH) two pipes of diameter (as designed) will be laid beside the existing drain to carry the additional
discharge.
c) The surface drain near SWPH cross the N-S road by means of 1-1600φ underground pipe.
d) At the last stretch beside the existing switch yard, A 2200mm wide new RCC drain shall be constructed. This
drain will pass through a new culvert at road crossing before joining the plant main drain.
