Arcs moving due to Lorentz forces in gases in the range from

normal to high pressure are used in several technical
applications. Examples are low voltage switches, high current
breakers as well as plasma torches. Here, the additional
power dissipation caused by the lateral blowing is of interest.
Previous computer simulations of high pressure arcs mostly
treat hydrodynamic equations in 2D or even ID coupled with
electromagnetic equations in some cases only.
A time-dependent 3D simulation solving the MHD equation
system is applied here to study the behavior of a moving
high-pressure arc in more detail. As an example, an arc in
SF6 gas at 3 bar moving on parallel rail electrodes due to
own magnetic field is analyzed. Thermal equilibrium is
assumed. Recalculated data for radiation absorption and
composition in SF6 are applied. The thermodynamic
properties have been determined by self-consistent kinetic
models. The arc model has been implemented into a
commercial fluid dynamics package which solves the Navier-
Stokes equations and Maxwell's equations.
Results allow the determination of the arc velocity and a
comparison with analytical estimations. In addition, main
forces in the momentum balance and dominant contributions
in the power balance are discussed focusing on the impact of
the lateral blowing.
