1. (a) (i) State the Newton’s law of viscosity and then write down its equation giving out the
significance of the negative sign (03 marks)
(ii) Sketch the graph of velocity against time for the motion of the ball falling in a
viscous fluid. (03 marks)
(b) (i) Write the equation of Bernoulli’s theorem for fluid at rest. (01 mark)
(ii) A horizontal pipe of diameter 20cm has a constriction of diameter 4cm.The velocity of
water in the pipe is 2m/s and pressure is 107N/M2.Calculate the velocity and pressure at the
constriction. (04 marks)
(c) (i) What is critical velocity of a liquid? (02 marks)
(ii) Eight rain drops each of radius 1mm are falling through air at a terminal velocity
of 5cm/s. If they coalesce to form a bigger drop, what will be the terminal velocity of
bigger drop (03 marks)
(d) Water is flowing through a horizontal pipe having different cross-sections at two
points A and B. The diameters of the pipe at A and B are 0.6m and 0.2m
respectively. The pressure difference between points A and B is 1m column of
water. Calculate the volume of water flowing per second. (04 marks)

2. (a) (i) State and prove Brewster’s law for polarization of light. (05marks)

(ii) the polarizing angle of transparent medium is 60 . Determine the refractive index and
angle of refraction. (04marks.)
(b) When a grating with 300lines per millimeter is illuminated normally with a parallel beam
of monochromatic light a second order principal maximum is observed at 18.90 to the
straight through direction. Find the wavelength of light. (03marks)
(c) An ambulance fitted with a siren of frequency 400Hz is going towards a vertical wall at a
speed of 54km/h. A person standing on the road, behind the ambulance, listens to the siren
sound coming from the ambulance as well as that coming after reflection from the wall.
Calculate the apparent frequency of the sound wave
(i) Directly coming from the siren to the person. (02 marks)
(ii) Coming after reflection from the wall. (02 marks)
(d) A two slits experiment is done with monochromatic light of wavelength 6x10-6m. The
Slits are 2mm a part and the fringes are observed on the screen placed 10cm away from
the slits and it is found that the interference pattern shifts by 5mm when a transparent
plate of thickness 0.5mmis introduced in the path of the one of the slits. What is the
refractive index of the transparent plate. (04marks)

3.(a) (i) Use the graph to explain the effect of temperature on surface tension of liquid
(03marks)
(ii) A circular ring of thin wire 3cm in radius is suspended with its plane horizontal by a
thread passing through the 10cm mark of a meter ruler pivoted at its center and is

balanced by 8g weight suspended at 80cm mark. When the ring is just brought in
contact with the surface of the liquid, 8g weight has to be moved to 90cm mark to just
detach the ring from the liquid. Find the surface tension of the liquid. Angle of contact
is zero. (05marks)
(b) (i) Show that the energy per unit volume of stretched wire is given by
U=1/2 x stress x strain (03marks)
(ii) A 1.2m long metal wire is fixed securely at both ends to two solid supports so that
the wire is initially horizontal. When 29g mass is hung from the middle point of the
wire, the midpoint is observed to move down by 20mm. If the diameter of the wire
is 0.1mm. Determine the young modulus of the material of the wire. (05marks)

(c)Helium gas occupies a volume of 0.04m3at a pressure of 2x105Pa and temperature of


300K. Calculate;
(i) mass of helium (02marks)
(ii) the r.m.s speed of its molecules. (02marks)
4. (a) (i) Distinguish between electric potential and electric potential energy. (02 marks)
(ii) Two positive point charges of 10µC and 8µC respectively are 10cm apart. Find the
work done in bringing them to a separation of 6cm. (03 marks)
(b) (i) State any three factors affecting the capacitance of a capacitor (03 marks)
(ii) A parallel plate capacitor having plate area 100cm2 and separation 1.0mm holds a
charge of 0.12µC when connected to a 120V battery. Find the dielectric constant of the
material filling the gap. (04 marks)
(c) A 10MΩ resistor is connected in series with an uncharged 1.0µF capacitor and battery
with e.m.f 12V.
(i) What is the time constant? (02 marks)
(ii) What fraction of the final charge is on the capacitor at t = 46s? (03 marks)
(iii) What fraction of the initial current is still flowing at t = 46s? (03 marks)

5. (a) (i) By using the diagram of hysteresis loop explain why soft iron is more strongly
magnetized than steel? (04marks)

(ii) In hydrogen atom, the electrons revolve around the nucleus 6.8x10 times per second
in an orbit of radius 0.53A0 calculate the magnetic moment. (03marks)
(b) (i) what is velocity selector? (01mark)

(ii) An electron after being accelerated through a p.d of 100V enters a uniform magnetic
field of 0.004T perpendicular to its direction of motion. Find the radius of the path
described by the electron. (04 marks)
(c) A long straight cylindrical wire conductor of radius 5cm carries a steady current of 2A that
is uniformly distributed through the cross section of the conductor. Determine the magnetic
field

(i) at a point 8cm outside the conductor. (02marks)
(ii) at a point 3cm inside the conductor from the center. (03marks)
(iii) plot the graph to show the variation of magnetic field with distance from the center
of the coil. (03marks).
6. (a) (i) What are the main differences between Rutherford’s model and Bohr’s model of an
atom? (02 Marks)
(ii) How do β-particles differ from the electrons obtained by photoelectric emission?
(02 Marks)
(b) (i) Green light ejects electrons from a certain photo-sensitive surface, yellow light does
not. What will happen for red and violet light? (02 Marks)
(ii) The maximum energy of photoelectrons emitted from a metal plate is 1.2 eV. If
the threshold wavelength is 2.48 ×10-7 m, calculate the wavelength of incident light.

(c) A nucleus X initially at rest, undergoes alpha decay according to the equation:

(ii)The alpha particle produced in the above process is found to move in a circular
track of radius 0.11 m in a uniform magnetic field of 3 tesla. Find the energy
(in MeV) released during the process and the binding energy of the parent nucleus
