PURPOSE:
1. To ensure that patient care equipment is used safely and appropriately, performed
properly, and is managed cost-effectively in the environment of care for which it is
intended.
2. To minimize the risk of using patient care equipment.
DEFINITIONS:
1. Condemn: to disapprove of; to censure.
RESPONSIBILITY:
1. Biomedical Department.
POLICY:
1. To Condemn/Remove Equipment.
PROCEDURE:
1. Condemning/Removing Equipment:
The following things should be the reason for removal of equipments from service:
1.1. Obsolete.
1.2. Clinically unsafe.
1.3. Electrically unsafe.
1.4. Mechanically unsafe.
1.5. Beyond economic repair.
1.6. Spare parts unavailable.
1.7. Unreliable operation.
1.8. Contaminated internally with body fluids or other obnoxious substance.
2. Biomedical Department shall notify finance when equipment is condemned to ensure it is
removed from the asset register.
3. When a decision has been made that an item of equipment has reached the end of its
working life, the relevant Head Department and the Biomedical Supervisor should jointly
complete a "Condemning and Disposal Form" for Electro Medical Equipment.
4. On disposal of the equipment the Biomedical Supervisor should;

1.1. Remove the equipment from the department inventory.


1.2. Remove biomedical equipment register.
1.3. Cancel the maintenance schedule and any outstanding service contract.
5. The Head Department shall send the condemned equipment with the condemning and
Disposal Form to the biomedical department store.
6. The Biomedical Department should maintain condemned equipment register.
