AMM TASK 21-26-00-860-002-A - Ground Operations in Heavy Rain or High Dust/Sand Concentration
Background:
The presence of dust and/or sand within the Avionics Bay, computer racks and computers themselves is normal.
The particular atmospheric dust rate in desert or polluted regions is a contributor (silicon) of Avionics Bay contamination. However,
contamination can also come from proximity of building sites (concrete), Ground Power Unit use (exhaust gases/particles Carbon,
Sulphur...),...
A detailed physico-chemical analysis should be made to assess the exact dust contamination.
Are they specific maintenance tasks to clean contamination in Avionics Bay?
How to protect the Avionics Equipment against heavy rain and/or dust storms?
Solution / Recommendation:
The Avionics Ventilation filters have a separating efficiency better than ARINC 600 standard of 400 microns, usually all bigger dust
particles (more than 40μm) are stopped by avionics filter, only smaller one could be blown in the system (as sand or dust).
The contamination (dust and/or sand) trapped inside one shelf will stay in this shelf or will go through the computers installed in
this shelf.
The computers and their ventilation system are designed to cope with a certain amount of dust contamination. The computers
suppliers are aware about the ARINC 600 standard. Should a computer is particularly affected by contamination, it should make
certain that the computer has been properly designed to cope with this standard (for example pressure drop across the computer
must be below 3 mbar).
Avionics Bay cleaning; as per TASK AMM 05-51-25-200-002-A/-003-A, 4.Procedure, SUBTASK 05-51-25-210-064-A, B.
Internal Inspection, Item 1, E:
In the avionics compartment, use a VACUUM CLEANER and a BRUSH-BRISTLED, SOFT to clean the equipment without removing
computers. Keep the vacuum cleaner out of the avionics compartment to prevent dust contamination.
This task can be done on regular basis especially when aircraft operates in specific condition (dust/sand storm, volcanic ash,…).
Avionics Racks cleaning as per AMM TASK 12-21-13-100-001-A, 4.Procedure , SUBTASK 12-21-13-160-050-A:
Cleaning of the Avionics Compartment and the Cockpit (Panels 10VU and 13VU) with computers removes, by using a
VACUUM CLEANER and a BRUSH - BRISTLED, SOFT or a Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material Ref. 14SBA1). Keep the vacuum
cleaner out of the avionics compartment to prevent new dust contamination in the avionics compartment.
This task can be done on less regular basis than previous task. Interval for application should be based upon the operator
experience, and the fleet operation conditions.
Avionics Valves cleaning as per recommendation include in their dedicated CMM, under supplier responsibility.
To further protect the aircraft under dust sand/storm, volcanic ash or heavy rain conditions, please be aware of the following
procedure:
AMM TASK 10-11-00-553-801-A - Preservation of the Aircraft from a Sand/Dust Storm or Volcanic Ash Condition on the
Ground,
AMM TASK 21-26-00-860-002-A - Ground Operations in Heavy Rain or High Dust/Sand Concentration.
Note: If both Packs are not available, the time limits of closing the avionics ventilation system are available into FCOM.
MPD aspects :
Depending on the level of exposition to specific conditions (dust/sand storm, volcanic ash,…), the following task interval can be
tailored for operator convenience based on fleet experience:
MPD TASK for filter discard (212600-11-1, 212643-01-1, 212643-02-1, 212643-06-1, 212643-07-1, 212643-11-1),
MPD TASK for clean grids of relay box VU panels (212600-09-1),
MPD TASK for inspection of the siphon assembly (212643-10-1),
AMM TASK 12-21-13-100-001-A - Cleaning of the Avionics Compartment and the Cockpit.
