3.2.1 C-LINE
The C-LINE point detectors are characterized by a very high detection reliability
combined with a high immunity to deceptive phenomena. Different parameter sets
can be configured in the detectors in order to adapt the detectors to the prevailing
conditions at the installation location.

The signals captured by the sensory are transmitted to the algorithm. The
algorithm analyses and evaluates the course of the signals (signal intensity, rate of
rise and fluctuation). The algorithms are set by selecting the parameter set, which
sets the detectors to the expected types of fire and ambient influences.

3.2.2 S-LINE
Properties
In contrast to C-LINE detectors, S-LINE detectors have the following features:
● Dynamic influence on the parameter sets
● Pattern recognition
● Real time interpretation of the situation
● Process- and time-controlled switchover of the parameter sets
Signal processing of the S-LINE detectors is based on ASAtechnology (ASA =
Advanced Signal Analysis). ASAtechnology can also be characterized as "second
generation algorithms". Signal processing with ASAtechnology allows for optimum
adaptation of detector behavior to the corresponding ambient conditions.
S-LINE detectors are characterized by their unique detection reliability and high
immunity to deceptive phenomena.

The following figure shows signal processing with S-LINE detectors in the form of a

Sensory Signal analysis Algorithms Result

Sensory
The signals captured by the sensory are transmitted to the algorithm. The
algorithms are set by selecting the parameter set.
Algorithms
In comparison to the detection algorithms (DA), the individual parameters of the
selected parameter set can be adapted with ASAtechnology. A real time
interpretation of the situation leads to a dynamic influence on the algorithm. This
results in a broadening of the application range of the parameter set and thus of
the detector. The detector reacts more sensitively in the event of fire, and more
robustly in the event of deceptive phenomena.
Switching over the parameter set
In addition to the selection of the parameter set, the S-LINE detectors enable time-
or process-controlled switching over of the parameter sets ('Manned'/'Unmanned'
switchover). Thanks to this function, the detector can be used in places where the
situation changes regularly and frequently (e.g. kitchens, production halls).

1 Heat sensors 3 Forward scatterer

2 Backward scatterer 4 Labyrinth

The detector has a sophisticated opto-electronic measuring chamber with two

optical transmitters, an optical receiver, and two thermal sensors.
The transmitters illuminate the smoke particles from different angles. One sensor
acts as forward scatterer, the other as backward scatterer. The scattered light then
hits the receiver (photodiode) and generates a measurable electric signal.
The combination of a forward and backward scatterer facilitates optimum detection
and the differentiation of light and dark particles, which leads to a homogenous
response behavior and optimizes the differentiation of wanted signals and
deceptive phenomena.
In addition, the heat sensors make it possible to detect fires without smoke
generation.

29 | 138
Building Technologies 007004_t_en_--
Fire Safety 2015-11-04
2BStructure and function
3 19BDetector

The combination of optical and thermal sensor signals optimizes detection

reliability. This has the following advantages:
● Early detection of all types of fire, whether they generate light or dark smoke, or
no smoke at all.
● The neural fire detector can be operated at a lower sensitivity level and thus
achieves a higher immunity against false alarms which can be caused by cold
aerosols (e.g. by smoking, electrical welding, etc.). In the case of an open fire,
the smoke sensitivity is heightened by the temperature increase, which means
that a detection reliability level that is comparable to that of the wide-spectrum
smoke detector can be achieved.
The neural fire detectors FDOOT241-x/-Ax can also be used either as purely
optical smoke detectors or pure heat detectors. This is possible by selecting one of
the following sensor modes (with the detector exchanger and tester or on the
control panel):
● Sensor mode 0: Application as neural fire detector
● Sensor mode 1: Application as heat detector
● Sensor mode 2: Application as smoke detector
In sensor mode 1 or 2 the parameter sets of the heat detector FDT241 or of the
wide-spectrum smoke detector FDO241, respectively, can be selected. These
neural fire detectors then act in a similar way to heat detector FDT241 or smoke
detector FDO241.

3.4.2 Wide-spectrum smoke detector

The wide-spectrum smoke detector is an optical smoke detector with an optical
sensor. It works according to the principle of forward scattering. This detector
reacts with extreme sensitivity to light fire aerosols. The following wide-spectrum
smoke detectors are available:

3.5 Function

3.5.1 Parameter sets

The detection behavior of the point detectors is influenced by the parameter sets
so that it can be specifically adjusted to the fire phenomena and environmental
conditions to be expected in the environment to be monitored.
All parameter sets are programmed in the point detectors. During commissioning,
the optimum parameter set must be selected for the conditions at the place of
installation.
The parameter set is selected on the control panel on interactive and FDnet
detector lines.
On an AnalogPLUS detector line, the 'Universal Fast' parameter set can be
selected as an alternative to the default parameter set when replacing smoke
detectors with the detector exchanger and tester.
On a collective or MS8 detector line, the parameter set is selected with the detector
exchanger and tester.
If fire detector FDOOT241-A4 is operated on a SIGMALOOP detector line, the
detector transmits the sensor values to the control panel and the parameter sets on
the detector are not active. The detection behavior is configured on the SIGMASYS
control panel.
If a parameter set is not selected in collective, MS8 or AnalogPLUS operation, the
detector operates with the relevant default parameter set.
Information about the default parameter set can be found in the 'Parameter sets:
Neural fire detector [➙ 57]' chapter.
The number of the selected parameter set can be read out and checked using the
detector exchanger and tester.
You can select and set the parameter sets as follows:
● Using the 'SintesoWorks' software
● Directly on your fire detection system
● With the detector exchanger and tester FDUD292
The exact procedure for selecting and setting the parameters is described in the
relevant documentation.

Observe the 'Applicable documents' section in the 'About this document' chapter.

3.5.2 Danger levels

The detector's signal processing efficiently distinguishes between fire events and
deceptive phenomena. The basis for reaching a danger level is not only given by
measured values exceeding a "response threshold"; moreover, the smoke density
progression is observed over a longer period of time and assessed by the
algorithms.
Fire detectors can transmit the following danger levels* to the control panel:

Danger level Meaning Comment

0 No danger Normal condition
1 Check the situation A different parameter set should
potentially be selected (inappropriate
application)
2 Warning Possible danger
3 Alarm Fire

* On a SIGMALOOP detector line, it is the sensor values, not the danger levels,
that are transmitted to the control panel.
● The evaluation of the danger level and the decisions to be taken (e.g. activation
of remote transmission) are configured in the control panel.
● On a collective detector line, only danger levels 0 and 3 can be transmitted to
the control panel.

3.5.3 Diagnosis levels

The point detector monitors its operation largely autonomously. The signals of all
sensors are permanently monitored.
The following components in particular should be monitored for correct
functionality:
● Temperature sensors
● Light emitters
● Light receivers
Signal processing takes account of the monitoring results and adapts its behavior
accordingly.
The following diagnosis levels are derived from the different control measurements:
● Normal
● Observe information
● Replacement recommended
● Replacement necessary
● Fault
You will find details in the following table.
When an error occurs which impairs the correct functionality of the device, a fault
message is reported to the control panel.
To correct the cause of the fault, additional information is available in the device.
The additional information can be displayed using e.g. the detector exchanger and
tester FDUD292 or the intelligent detector tester FDUD293.
You will find more information in documents 007227 and 009718.
See 'Applicable documents [➙ 9]' chapter.

3.5.4 Line separator

All FDnet devices are equipped with a line separator.
The FDnet device is equipped with electronic switches which isolate the defective
part in case of a short-circuit on the detector line. The rest of the detector line
remains serviceable.
On a loop line all FDnet devices remain fully functional after a simple error.

3.5.5 Automatic recognition of the detector line protocol

The multiple protocol detectors FDOOT241-x/-Ax may communicate via different
detector line protocols. These detectors recognize the protocol on the detector line
(e.g. FDnet or collective) and automatically switch to the protocol in question. This
functionality facilitates commissioning in case of modernization, as no actions need
to be taken on the detector itself. For exceptions, see 'List of compatibility'.
You will find further information about migration and modernization in document
A6V10323158.

3.5.8 Connection for external alarm indicators

Two external alarm indicators can be connected to each point detector.
On the FDnet, it is possible to connect external alarm indicator to any point
detector. The trigger for activating the alarm indicator can be programmed at the
control panel.
Instead of an optical alarm indicator that flashes in the event of an alarm, the
sounder base is provided with an acoustic alarm indicator.

The extended flashing behavior of the detectors FDOOT241-A and FDOOT241-

Ax is described in the 'Extended flashing behavior of the alarm indicators [➙ 40]'
chapter.

3.5.9 Renovation mode

When operating the point detectors on the FDnet, individual detectors can be set
specifically to renovation mode on the fire control panel.
Select renovation mode if major work is being carried out in the room and large
volumes of dust or aerosols are being produced.

NOTICE
Changed settings
Limited alarm functions in renovation mode.
● In renovation mode, the neural fire detector and the heat detector only trigger
alarm when the temperature exceeds 80 °C for 20 seconds.
● The wide-spectrum smoke detector does not trigger an alarm in renovation
mode. All other functions continue to work as normal.

3.5.10 Test mode

For testing purposes the point detectors can be set to test mode. In test mode the
point detectors react faster and with a higher sensitivity level.

Electronic testing:
The point detectors can be tested with the detector exchanger and tester
FDUD292 or the intelligent detector tester FDUD293.
You will find more information in documents 007227 and 009718.

Physical testing:
● The optical function part on the neural fire detector can also be tested with the
test gas REF8 or REF8-S.
● Test the heat sensors of the neural fire detector with:
– Hot air fan
– RE7T Solo461 heat detector tester kit

3.5.11 Behavior in degraded mode

Applicable for the FDnet:
When the main processor of the fire control panel fails, the control panel works in
degraded mode operation. Depending on the control panel type, the fire control
panel can continue to perform the most important alarming and signaling functions
in degraded mode operation.
Degraded mode operation behavior on control panels that support degraded mode
operation:
● Alarming is still ensured in degraded mode operation.
● In degraded mode only collective alarming is possible. This means that in the
event of an alarm, it is possible to identify the detector line but not the exact
location of the detector triggering the alarm.
● If a sounder base is connected to the output for the external alarm indicator, it
is activated in degraded mode operation if there is a fire alarm (only with
detectors and sounder bases with ES ≥30); configuration for a specific control
panel is possible.
● When the connection for the external alarm indicator is used for a control
function (e.g. hold-open system), the output assumes the configured fail-safe
position (only with detectors with ES ≥30); configuration for a specific control
panel is possible.
Degraded mode operation on the FDnet is not supported in the same way by all
control panels. The information in the 'List of compatibility' and in the corresponding
control panel documentation must be taken into account during project planning.

3.6 Mounting variants

To install a point detector, a detector base is always required. After installing the
detector base, the point detector is simply screwed into the base by hand with the
detector exchanger or with the detector exchanger and tester.
Alternatively, the point detector can also be installed on a sounder base or an
interbase.

CAUTION
Possible sharp edges at the point detector
Risk of cutting injuries at fingers and hands
● Avoid holding the point detector at the edges of the smoke inlet opening.
● Only touch the point detector at the smooth surfaces of the housing as shown
in the graphic below.

Properties
● Quick installation and reliable contact due to screwless terminals
● Insertion of the insulated wires without any tools
● The centered alarm indicator makes an alignment of the detector base
superfluous
● Space for up to 6 auxiliary terminals for detector heating units etc.
Accessories are available for a variety of different applications and can be
combined to suit the particular application in question.

4.2 Ambient features

In selecting the optimum parameter set, the following factors must be taken into
account:
● Risk of damage to persons
● Value concentration
● Room geometry
● Deceptive phenomena
● Risk of fire
● Critical fire size

Risk of damage to persons

People's lives are severely at risk in venues such as concert halls, nursing homes,
and hospitals. The risk of damage to persons is therefore very high in such places.
In canteen kitchens the situation is different. Few people work in such facilities and
are able to save themselves in the event of timely alarms. The risk of damage to
persons is thus rather low in this case.

Value concentration
Irreplaceable cultural assets are often on display in museums. Computer centers
house servers with large data volumes. The concentration of valuable items is
rather high. In a normal hotel room the concentration of valuable items must be
classified as low.

Room geometry
High ceilings, complex room shapes or well-ventilated rooms have a complex room
geometry. This aggravates early fire detection, as it is difficult for the fire
phenomenon to reach the fire detector. An office room with normal ceiling height
has a simple room geometry.

4 24BAmbient features

Deceptive phenomena
Deceptive phenomena can deceive a fire detector and bring about a false alarm.
The deceptive phenomena differ depending on the fire detector. Examples of
deceptive phenomena include steam, cigarette smoke, dust, dry ice in
discotheques, exhaust fumes, aerosols occurring during welding, and heat sources
such as radiant heaters or hot engines.
In a small hotel room with a rather low ceiling where vapor from the bathroom may
penetrate the room, or in operating facilities where a lot of dust is generated, many
deceptive phenomena must be taken into consideration. In a clean room where
electronic modules are fabricated the risk of deceptive phenomena is rather low.

Risk of fire
In production facilities where highly combustible materials such as flammable
liquids, cotton, paper etc. are processed and where electrical machines are
operated, the risk of fire is very high. Minor overheating or sparks may cause a fire.
In a storehouse where steel is stored and where no electrical installation is
provided with the exception of lighting, the risk of fire is very low.

Critical fire size

When a waste paper basket in a metal-processing facility catches fire, the
consequential damage is usually rather low. Here we are talking about a critical,
medium fire size that can still be tolerated. The situation is completely different in
pharmaceutical production facilities where even the lowest smoke concentration
may impair the process and where combustible materials are processed. Even the
smallest fire must be detected immediately. Therefore, we need to define what is
termed a small admissible critical fire size.

4.3 Parameter sets: Neural fire detector

4.3.1 Neural fire detector FDOOT241-x / -Ax (sensor mode 0)

4.3.1.1 Description
Parameter sets:

High Suppression (8)

The parameter set only reacts when a temperature increase of approx. 8 K is
detected in addition to the optical signal. Due to the combination of optical and
thermal signals, it has better properties than a pure heat detector. This parameter
set is also suited for applications that can otherwise only be covered with special
detectors. E.g., applications with permanent, optical deceptive phenomena (dry ice
in discotheques, welding).

Suppression (5)
The parameter set displays very robust behavior in rooms where deceptive
phenomena such as cigarette smoke or exhaust fumes can be expected. It reacts
in a very robust way to the deceptive phenomenon vapor.

High Compensation (7)

This parameter set reacts in the same way as the 'Robust (2)' parameter set,
however, the compensation range is twice as large. This parameter set is thus
especially suited for rooms in which a lot of dust and other deposits can be
expected during longer periods.

Robust (2)
The parameter set is intended for robust response. The sensitivity is the same as
with the 'Suppression (5)' parameter set; however, deceptive phenomena are not
explicitly analyzed and suppressed. It is particularly suited to application in rooms
where deceptive phenomena such as cigarette smoke or dust can be expected.
The 'Robust (2)' parameter set is suitable for higher rooms in comparison to the
'Suppression (5)' parameter set.

Insensitive (0)
The parameter set is only available for the FDOOT241-9 (ES <13) in collective
operation. Regarding visible aerosols the priority is on robust response. The
response behavior regarding open fires is sensitive and fast.

Balanced (4)
The parameter set displays a balanced response behavior in its response to fires
and robustness to deceptive phenomena. It reacts faster with open fires. It reacts
slower with vapor, cigarette smoke or smoldering fires.

Sensitive (0)
The parameter set is only available for the FDOOT241-8 in MS8 operation. It has
been specially developed for the migration of ionization detectors to MS8 control
panels.
Regarding sensitivity and response time, the parameter set reacts in a similar way
to an MS8 ionization detector. The difference in the response behavior of an optical
detector and an ionization detector is taken into account. When the detector is
migrated to an FDnet detector line, the parameter setting should be changed to
'Fast Response (6)'.

Fire Safety 2015-11-04
3BPlanning
4 25BParameter sets: Neural fire detector

Fast Response (6)

The parameter set reacts in a fast and highly sensitive manner. It is especially
suited for rooms without deceptive phenomena, where the priority is on detecting
the fire as early as possible.

High Sensitive Fast (9)

The parameter set reveals a significantly higher optical and thermal sensitivity than
'Fast Response (6)'. On account of its particularly high sensitivity, it is also suitable
for applications that can otherwise only be covered with special detectors.

Download 1 (14)/Download 2 (15)

The parameter sets can be loaded on site on an application-specific basis
(depending on the control panel).

Universal Fast (12)

The parameter set is only available for the FDOOT241-A3 in AnalogPLUS
operation. It is particularly suitable for migrating detectors to AnalogPLUS control
panels.
In terms of sensitivity, it is similar to the 'Balanced (4)' parameter set. With a
response time of <10 seconds, it simulates a fast response similar to AnalogPLUS
detectors. This increases sensitivity towards deceptive phenomena.

Super Sensitive (11)

The parameter set is only available for fire detector FDOOT241-Ax from product
version ES ≥50. It is suitable for applications that require fast and sensitive
response behavior. It is twice as sensitive as the 'High Sensitive Fast (9)'
parameter set in detecting smoldering fires and temperature increases. Its
response behavior with respect to smoldering fires is similar to that of the FDO241
with the 'Sensitive (3)' parameter set.

If the FDOOT241-A4 is operated as SDF1200, SDF2200 or SDF3100 under

SIGMALOOP, it can be switched to '0' mode with the detector exchanger and
tester. However, '0' mode has not been tested for EN 54-7. As it also evaluates
the heat sensors, the FDOOT241-A4 reacts a maximum of 1.5 times more
sensitively compared to purely optical behavior.

4.3.3 Neural fire detector FDOOT241-x / -AX (sensor mode 2,

'Smoke detector')
Select 'Sensor mode 2' 'Smoke detector' when fast temperature changes may
occur which are not caused by fire (e.g., radiant heaters, hot engines). In this
sensor mode, the detector reacts as a wide-spectrum smoke detector and only
responds optically. The two optical sensors mean that it displays balanced
response behavior in different types of fire.

Parameter sets:

Robust (2)
Sensitivity to aerosols is similar to 'Balanced' in sensor mode 0 without temperature
influence.

Universal (1)
Sensitivity to aerosols is the same as the sensitivity of 'Robust (2)'. The response
time is between 'Robust (2)' and 'Sensitive (3)'.

Sensitive (3)
Sensitivity to aerosols is the same as the sensitivity of 'Fast Response (6)' in
sensor mode 0 without temperature influence.

Sensitivity to aerosols is the same as the sensitivity of 'Universal Fast (12)' in
sensor mode 0 without temperature influence.

Super Sensitive (5)

Sensitivity to aerosols is the same as the sensitivity of 'Super Sensitive (5)' in
sensor mode 0 without temperature influence.
This parameter set is available for all FDOOT241-Ax fire detectors from product
version 'ES ≥50'.

Ultra Sensitive (6)

Sensitivity to aerosols is extremely high.

Upon commissioning of the fire detection system, the optimum parameter set must
be selected based on the existing risk and the ambient conditions.
If the fire detectors are operated on the FDnet (addressed), the fire detectors are
automatically set to the basic setting for the country in question when the control
panel is started up for the first time. Individual adaptation takes place using the
commissioning software on the corresponding control panel.
If the fire detectors are operated in collective, MS8, SIGMALOOP, or AnalogPLUS
mode, the detectors operate with the default setting the first time they are
commissioned. In this operation mode, individual adaptation of the detector
behavior is performed using the detector exchanger and tester FDUD292.

4.7.1 Ambient conditions

In markets where the use of the 'Technical Ambient Supervision Message' is
permitted, the point detector can be positioned above or near objects which require
the ambient temperature to be monitored in order to prevent damage.
'Technical Ambient Supervision Message' mode detects an increase or decrease in
temperature.
You can set the following parameters using the 'SintesoWorks' software:
● Threshold value in the range of -20…+70 °C
● Alarming when the temperature threshold value is exceeded or undershot
● Hysteresis
You will find more detailed information in the fire detection system documentation.

2 Message/output signal

When an ambient temperature of 35 °C is reached, the point detector sends a

message to the control panel. As long as the hysteresis is not undershot, the
message is sent.
In the example shown, the message is no longer sent once the ambient
temperature of 30 °C (threshold value minus hysteresis) is undershot.

4.7.2 Configuration
You can configure the point detector as follows:

Adjustable values Notes

Normal hysteresis range Hysteresis range of 1 °C

Large hysteresis range Hysteresis range of 5 °C

Temperature [°C] Permissible temperature range: -20…+70 °C

Adjustable increment: 1 °C

5 Mounting / Installation

5.1 Required space

● Upon insertion of the detector, the detector base is stressed by compression,
tension and torsion. The fixing must thus be designed accordingly.
● Detector bases must be placed flat on the ceiling.
● Avoid mounting on steps, concrete ribs, etc.
● Install the detector base directly on the recessed box, or together with a base
attachment, when the supply lead is surface-mounted and the cable diameter is
more than 6 mm.
● There must be at least 50 cm below and at least 2 cm of free space to the

General
Connect a control panel-specific end-of-line (EOL) to the end of the collective
detector line.

Connecting external alarm indicators

Observe the following points when connecting external alarm indicators:
● If the external alarm indicator is connected to only one detector, there is no
limitation.
● If the detector FDOOT241-A9 is used in combination with the base adapter
FDB299, there is no limitation.
● If the external alarm indicator is connected to more than one detector, this is
only admissible on the following conditions:
– All detectors use the Sinteso base FDB20x (do not mix with older base
generations e.g. AlgoRex bases).
– No sounder base is used.
– The detectors have a part number and the product version in question (see
table).

described in the control panel documentation.

Migrating existing detectors

You will find further information about migration and modernization in document
A6V10323158.

Commissioning a collective or MS8 detector line

The commissioning of the collective detector line is performed on the control panel.
The exact procedure is described in the control panel documentation.
After commissioning the detector line, the parameter sets can be set with the
detector exchanger and tester FDUD292.

Changing over from a collective to an FDnet detector line

When changing from a collective detector line with FD20 detectors to an FDnet
detector line, the following must be taken into account:
● There is no need to replace the detector base FDB201 with a detector base
FDB221.
● It is not necessary to replace the sounder base FDSB292, either. On an FDnet
detector line the sounder base FDSB292 behaves in the same way as the
sounder base FDSB291 with product version ES ≥30.
● When a detector is removed from an FDnet detector line and that detector is
located on a collective detector base (FDB201 or FDSB292), the
communication between the control panel and the next detector is interrupted.
In this case, alarming by the subsequent detectors is no longer possible. A fault
is indicated on the control panel.
● The changeover takes place by reading in the FDnet detector line several
times. Wait 30 s before reading in the FDnet detector line again. Repeat the
reading-in process for the FDnet detector line until the correct number of
installed detectors per FDnet detector line is read in.
Recommendation: Use the line tester FDUL221 for the changeover.

Changing over from an FDnet detector line to a collective detector

line
When changing from an FDnet detector line with FD20 detectors on a collective
line, or when new detectors are used on a collective detector line for the first time,
collective detector bases are mandatory.

WARNING
Removal of the devices cannot be detected when the wrong detector bases are
used
Fire may spread unhindered.
● Only detector bases FDB201 and FDB201-AA as well as sounder base
FDSB292 may be operated on a collective detector line.

Changeover is normally performed automatically. With some detectors, a

temporary fault or alarm may occur during changeover.

Changing over from AnalogPLUS detector line to FDnet detector line

or from FDnet detector line to AnalogPLUS detector line
The changeover must take place by reading in the detector line several times.
Repeat the reading-in process until the correct number of installed detectors per
detector line is read in. The detector line must be switched off for around 30 s
between reading-in processes.
Recommendation: Use the line tester FDUL221 for the changeover.

Changing over from SIGMALOOP detector line to FDnet detector line

or from FDnet detector line to SIGMALOOP detector line
The changeover must take place by reading in the detector line several times.
Repeat the reading-in process until the correct number of installed detectors per
detector line is read in.

Changing over from interactive to FDnet detector line or from FDnet

detector line to interactive
The changeover must take place by reading in the detector line several times.
Repeat the reading-in process until the correct number of installed detectors per
detector line is read in.

7.1 Status polling with the detector exchanger and

tester
All point detectors are equipped with the MC link (Maintenance and Commissioning
Link).
Using this interface, it is possible to read out data from the device in a proximity
method over short distances with the detector exchanger and tester FDUD292 or
the intelligent detector tester FDUD293.
You will find more information in documents 007227 and 009718.

Depending on the authorization level of the user and the control panel type, the
following actions can be performed:
● Device test
– Deviation/No deviation
– Detailed status request 1
● Activation of a test alarm
● Reading out the identification number, customer text and measure text 1
● Localization and parameter setting of the detector (parameter setting not in
FDnet mode) 1
1 Actions cannot be carried out using the intelligent detector tester FDUD293.

7.2 Performance check

The selftest automatically subjects the detectors to an extensive electrical
performance check. Regular performance checks of the detectors are required
nonetheless.
The performance check can be undertaken using the following tools:
● Detector exchanger and tester FDUD292
● Intelligent detector tester FDUD293
● Test gas
● Hot air

Recommendation:
● Check the devices every year.
● Replace heavily soiled or damaged devices.
● All point detectors should be replaced after 6 to 8 years of service, depending
on the ambient conditions.

7.2.1 'Technical Ambient Supervision Message' performance

check
You cannot test whether the 'Technical Ambient Supervision Message' is
functioning correctly with test devices.
Checking can only take place indirectly:
 You must know the current ambient temperature.
 Enter the following parameters in the 'SintesoWorks' software:
– A hysteresis range of 5 °C.
– A temperature threshold which is at least 10 °C below the current ambient
temperature.
– Alarming when value falls below threshold
 The detector sends a signal to the control panel.
 The 'Technical Ambient Supervision Message' is working correctly if the control
panel displays an alarm.

7.3 Testing detectors

Depending on the detector, testing may be performed with one or more of the
following accessories:
● Detector exchanger and tester FDUD292
● Intelligent detector tester FDUD293 (recommended)
● Detector tester RE6
● Test gas

test mode
FDOOT ● The FDOOT with ES <13 reveals the same optical and thermal sensitivity
level in all parameter sets.
● From ES 13, the detector reacts in correspondence with the parameter set in
test mode. This means when the neural fire detector is operated as a heat
detector (sensor mode 1), it must be thermally checked as well.
FDO ● The detector reacts optically with medium sensitivity (2 %/m).
FDT ● The detector reacts when a temperature of 60 °C is reached or at a
temperature increase of 22 K/min or more.

The flashing behavior of the alarm indicators in case of alarm is described in

chapters 'Internal alarm indicator in the case of ES <10' and 'Extended flashing
behavior of alarm indicators in the case of ES ≥10'.

7.3.1 Testing detectors with detector exchanger and tester

Testing detectors on a collective or addressed (FDnet, AnalogPLUS,
SIGMALOOP, interactive, MS8) detector line is easiest with the 'detector
exchanger and tester FDUD292' or the 'intelligent detector tester FDUD293'. With
these devices, the detectors can also be tested in normal operating mode without
any problems.
A detector can also be switched to test mode for 10…60 s with the 'detector
exchanger and tester FDUD292'. The time taken until the test mode is switched off
depends on the detector line and the fire control panel. See table below.

Prerequisite Time
The detector is connected to a collective, MS8, interactive, AnalogPLUS, or SIGMALOOP 10 s
detector line.
The process of switching on the test mode via the service device is not supported by the 10 s
control panel.
The process of switching on the test mode via the service device is supported by the 60 s
control panel.

7.3.2 Testing detectors without detector exchanger and

tester/detector tester
The fire detectors are highly resistant to deceptive phenomena. This means that
optical fire detectors, for example, will recognize the immediate occurrence of
smoke (such as that which occurs during testing with test gas) as a deceptive
phenomenon and will not trigger an alarm. This is desirable in normal operation;
however, it does make testing with test gas problematical.
To enable detector testing with test gas or hot air, the detector must be switched to
test mode. Testing with test gas or hot air is performed differently on addressed
detector lines and collective detector lines.

FDnet, SIGMALOOP, interactive detector lines

The detector is set to test mode when the detector or the detector group is
switched to 'Test' on the control panel. The detector can be tested with test gas or
hot air.
If a FDOOT241-A4 point detector is operated under SIGMALOOP in sensor mode
'0', it cannot be activated with hot air.

Collective detector lines

On a collective detector line, the detector is not set to test mode if the detector
group is switched to 'Test' on the control panel.
Detectors on a collective detector line are switched to test mode for 3 minutes in
the following cases:
● Starting up and resetting the detector line.
● Inserting the detector.
● Removing the detector from the detector line and re-inserting it.

To trigger a detector using test gas, normally 2…4 gas discharges at intervals of
approx. 2 seconds are required. When the detector is in test mode, activation
takes place after approximately 10 seconds.

MS8/PMT and AnalogPLUS detector lines

On an MS8/PMT or AnalogPLUS detector line, the detector is not set to test mode
if the detector or the detector group is switched to 'Test' on the control panel.
Unlike on a collective detector line, the detector must not be removed from the
detector line for a short time and re-inserted. Testing without a detector exchanger
and tester is therefore difficult, especially with smoke detectors.

In AnalogPLUS mode, you can use the detector exchanger and tester to select
parameter set 12, which has a short response time.
