Name: Jenny Song

Topic: Relearning how to play a piano to play a music from video game I like.
Focus Area: Product creation
Inquiry Question: In order to relearn piano and be able to play the song I want, what steps do
I have to take, what skills do I need to get back and how much effort and
time would it take?
Presentation Method: Electronic portfolio
Presentation Time & Date: January 17th 9:55~10:15

1) Capstone Project Summary:

In the box below, please type out a 200 – 300-word summary highlighting the key points and
information that you plan to present during your Capstone Project presentation.

For my capstone project, I am planning to learn to play a music from my favourite video game on the
piano. I am going to find a music sheet of the song I want to play and practice it by myself until I can play
it. During practicing, if there is any symbols or signs that I do not know, I would look up in internet or the
lesson books that I used to use. If the music sheet is too hard for me, I am going to rearrange music to
reduce the number of notes and make it easier. When I am able to actually play it, I want to video record it
to present. In this project, I am hoping to relearn skills on playing piano that I used to know but now I
forgot, make time to practice piano again so I can get a habit of consistently practicing and I would be able
to continuously practice piano even after this project to not forget the skills I have again.

2) Core Competencies:
In the boxes below, explain how your project or the work we’ve done in CLC 12 Class demonstrates
your abilities and skills from each section of the Core Competencies. (You must choose at least two
points from each skill area of the core competencies.) *This was also done in your Capstone Draft
Proposal, so if the skills and abilities still apply and have not changed, then you can copy and paste
your answers in the Final Capstone Proposal*

Core Competency: How you demonstrate it in Capstone Project:

Personal Awareness & This project is about my passion, so I will be self-motivated and work
Responsibility diligently to reach the goals I set. Since playing piano is not something
that can be done in a week, I will need to be responsible and work
throughout the whole time I am given and be patient even when I cannot
do well as I wanted to do.
Social Responsibility This project is about my passion, so I will be self-motivated and work
diligently to reach the goals I set. Since playing piano is not something
that can be done in a week, I will need to be responsible and work
throughout the whole time I am given and be patient even when I cannot
do well as I wanted to do.
Critical Thinking This project is about my passion, so I will be self-motivated and work
diligently to reach the goals I set. Since playing piano is not something
that can be done in a week, I will need to be responsible and work
throughout the whole time I am given and be patient even when I cannot
do well as I wanted to do.
Creative Thinking To come up with my topic I have, I had to use the environment and skill
that I used to have and develop it into connecting with the video game I
like.
Communication I am going to get help from online and piano teacher who used to teach
me, and I am going to ask for advice for relearning piano to my sister and
people around me who can play piano whenever I complete some part of
the music or after I arranged it. With their feedback, I will develop my
skills and work on the skills I am not good at.
Personal & Cultural Identity I know that music and game is the one of the most important things in
my life that I had been passionated since long ago and I know that
knowing how to play an instrument can be my strength and developing it
to be better would work out significant to me.

3) Presentation preparation:
In the boxes below, answer the following questions: What will you require from your teacher, what will
you need to bring and what still needs to be completed between now and your Capstone presentation
day?
a) What will you require from your teacher in order to do your Capstone presentation? (Ex: Laptop,
table, poster paper, projector, etc…)

I will need the TV to connect my iPad for putting the presentation up.

b) What will you need to bring in order to do your Capstone presentation?

I will need to bring my iPad.

c) What still needs to be completed between now and your Capstone presentation day?

I still need more practices just in general and I also have to keep learning the music that I chose because I
haven’t be able to finish the song.

4) References and explanation of sources:

Please paste all your current list of sources along with a brief explanation of what you used them for in
your research. All these sources should also be listed on your website on your References page.
These are the songs that I have in my mind to play for my capstone project. All the songs are from a game
called Twisted Wonderland from Disney. I decided to play the third song and if I can, fifth song as well.

Final Capstone Project Reflection Questions

(Please give specific detailed answers.)

1. In the process of completing your Capstone Project, what did you learn about your subject? What did
you learn about your skill set? What did you learn about yourself?
My capstone project was about relearning so there was not really a new thing that I learned, but it was able to
remind me of the musical elements that I have forgotten. The biggest skill set of mine I learned was my time
management skill, and I realized I have to work better in managing things in order to finish my tasks. As for
myself, learned about the ways that I can keep myself constant on something (like practicing piano). I would
not do it just by myself, I do things better when I have a plan for a day or week on how much I am going to
play.
2. How is your project relevant to you? How is it relevant to the school? How is it relevant to the
community?
This project is more relevant to me than school and community. The piano has been very important in my life
since I played it when I was 5~6 years old. I have an attachment to piano and after quitting it, I always wanted
to make time for it again.

3. What impact did your Capstone have on you?

Capstone allowed me to evaluate my skills and find ways to improve. For example, I really struggled with
making time for practicing piano. I don’t really think I was able to improve dramatically through this, but
Capstone showed me what part I need to work on and how I should do it in future.

4. What aspects of your project are you most proud of?

I am proud that I was able to get some of my knowledge of music back in a very short period of time, by
myself. Also, even though I can’t say that I was extremely diligent with my capstone project, I am still proud
that I was able to get some practice done and learn parts of the song of my favourite video game.
5. What was a difficulty you encountered while researching your Capstone project? How were you able to
overcome those obstacles?
As I mentioned, finding time was the hardest part of my Capstone project. Since I have school work and tutors
as well, it is really hard to find time during the day because I can’t play piano at night and even when I have
time, I get impulse thought of just resting. These were the problems I had since before the capstone project,
and I wasn’t able to fully overcome them, but I figured out that having a plan+reminder in my phone, setting
an alarm, and keeping track visually helps me to push the thoughts to just not do anything.

6. What is the one thing you would have changed about your project if you could?
I would change the time so I would have more time, but if it is not possible, I would change the song, because I
think the song that I chose was a little bit higher level for me to play after not playing piano at all for almost a
year.

7. What advice would you offer to future Capstone students to help them with their Capstone journey?
I would tell them to never procrastinate. Postponing their work might be good for them right at the moment,
but anyway, they will have to do it eventually, so it is just piling up the pain for later yourself.
