Drawing for interpolation

Design process with client

Start out giving them a variable font so they can tinker with weights and decide which
weight they would like to work with

Variable font axes

Weight
Width
Optical
Have to draw a small version of every master you have
Ends up making an 8-master cube

Weight = 2 masters
Width = 4
Optical = 8

Pablo Impellari
Lucas de Groot drew Thesis
Thought about what happens with the weight axis stems and how to make it better
The increase of weights would be a gradual curve that gets more extreme as you
increase weight

GX Model = Graphic Extended (1991)

Developed by Apple
Unicode
Steve Jobs came in and killed it
GX has been part of all Apple operating systems
GX is based on how TrueType Hints work
Mike Reid
Tom Rickner
Part of the original Truetype team
Matthew Carter made “Skia”

Variable Fonts came around in 2016

Google Fonts asked “can we make these fonts smaller?”
Behdad Estabod
Dusted off GX specification
Took idea of how GX works and turned it into variable fonts

Italic Bezier Placement

Place anchors on extremes, but then you have a looooong curve that falls flat in the
Middle.
Put points at an angle where it makes sense
*Round corners don’t always need points on extremes*

If you’re interpolating between and narrow S and a wide S with a point in the middle, the
off-curve ratio and the angle must remain the same, but it won’t work
Try to reduce th error as much as you can from the masters
If that doesn’t work, you could make a middle master for the S

The angle of the point and off-curves must be the same and/or the ratio from one off-curve to
the point to the other off-curve to the point must be the same: a/b = c/d

Adding an intermediate master is a powerful solution

MutatorMath
Part of Superpolator for many years
Variable font math is similar to MutatorMath

Hinting
On an iOS app, it doesn’t make a difference
For Windows XP, China uses it, you will have to hint

What is a Designspace file?
It’s XML
If you open it up, you can see what’s going on
