In my presentation I am going to talk about the amnesty international organization also known

as AL and going to mention some things such as: what it is, what it does, countries involved
and their principles, who is the leader; awards;... Then I will make a short conclusion to
complete the work.
What it is - Amnesty International is a non-governmental organization that fights for the
promotion and the defense of human rights through the world. It was founded on the 28th of
May of 1961 by Peter Benenson in London. Their creation begun because of the arrest of two
young Portuguese students who were toasting and congratulating their freedom in a public
square during the Salazar regime. Peter Benenson was outraged and wrote an article t the The
Observer newspaper and launched a campaign that provoked an incredible response. After
that, an appeal was launched to create support for these political conditions.
What it does - This organization works voluntarily to defend human rights regardless of
any government, economic interest, or religion. Their principal mission is to investigate,
comment and later prevent and put an end to physical and mental abuse. They do that just by
putting pressure on the governments and on other actors and take steps to prevent and end
violations of human rights. AI provides support to individuals and communities who have been
victims of human rights violations, and works to ensure justice and accountability for these
acts.
Countries involved and their principles – AL is formed by a global community and their
members come from very different cultural countries and currently has more than 10 million
supporters in more than 150 countries. But they all follow the same principles such as
solidarity, action in cases of individual victims, global coverage, defend the human rights,
respect and so on…
Who is the leader – Currently in that position we have Dr Agnès Callamard. She is 57
years old and has French nationality. She leads the organization being the main spokesperson
and works with its staff and volunteers to develop and implement strategies for advancing
human rights advocacy and campaigning. Her responsibilities include overseeing Amnesty
International's research, policy, and advocacy work on issues such as the death penalty,
torture, and freedom of expression. She also represents the organization in international
forums and engages with governments, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to
promote human rights and social justice. She began her position as the leader in 1995 and has
continued to this day doing an amazing job.
Awards – AL has won many awards including the most important Nobel Peace Prize in
1977, and some others like four freedoms award in the category of freedom speech in 1984
and golden doves for peace in 1991.
Something that I was interested in was, what does the logo with the candle mean? And
then I found out that the candle is a symbol of hope and commitment to human rights. The
candle represents the light of hope that can shine in the darkness of human rights abuses and
injustices, and the commitment of Amnesty International and its supporters to shine a light on
those abuses and work to end them. The candle is often used in Amnesty International's
campaigns, events, and materials, and has become an iconic symbol of the organization's work
to promote and protect human rights around the world.
In summary, Amnesty International is a global organization committed to the defense and
promotion of human rights, working together with civil society and other organizations to
make the world a fairer and more equitable place for all people.
I chose this organization because I think it is important for everyone know AL and its
importance, by promoting the help to them and victims.
