PROGRAMME : DKA5A/5B/5C/5D

1. The diagram below shows a dam that holds water. Calculate the hydrostatic force per
meter of dam width acting on the curved surface AB of the dam.

2m
A

A quarter of a
B circle with a
radius of 4m

2. Find the resultant force R acting on a curved surface as in the figure below if the radius
is 2m.

3. Find and determine the position of the force components caused by the action of seawater (ρ =
1025kg/m3) on an area of arc AB in the figure below given that the arc width is 2m.

4. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force, R, given by a fluid of relative
density 1.0 against the curved blade as shown in the diagram below.

5. Find and determine the components of the force caused by the action of water on an area of
curve AB per meter of length of the curve.

6. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force due to water acting on a roller gate of
cylindrical form of 4.0m diameter as shown in figure below, when the gate is placed on the dam
in such a way that water is just going to spill. Take the length of the gate as 8m.

7. Find the horizontal and vertical component of water pressure acting on the face of a tainter gate
of 900 sector of radius 4m as shown in figure below. Take width of gate unity.

8. Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of the water pressure exerted on a tainter gate
of radius 8m as shown in figure below. Take width of the gate unity.

9. Gate ABC is a circular arc, sometimes called a tainter gate, which can be raised and lowered by
pivoting about point O. See figure below. For the position shown, determine:
a. The hydrostatic force of the water on the gate per unit width, and
b. Its line of action. Does the force pass through point O

10. Determine the magnitude of the resultant hydrostatic force that acts on the dam per meter of
length as shown in figure below. The density of water is ρw = 1 Mg/m3. Take r = 2.5 m.

11. The concrete dam in the shape of a quarter circle. Determine the magnitude of the resultant
hydrostatic force that acts on the dam per meter of length as shown in figure below. The density
of water is ρw = 1 Mg/m3.

12. A radial gate is used to control water on a dam. Calculate the vertical and horizontal force and
determine the resultant hydrostatic force acting on the gate if it is 40 ft long (or wide into the
page) as shown in figure below.

13. Determine the magnitude of the resultant force that the water exert on the dam and the depth
at which it acts. The dam is 45 ft wide (into the page) as shown in figure below.

14. The gravity dam shown is 30 m wide (perpendicular to the plane of the drawing). The depth of
water in the reservoir upstream of the dam is 10 m. Determine the total force the water exerts
on the gravity dam and the depth beneath the surface of the reservoir at which this force acts.

15. Referring to the figure below:

a. Determine the total hydrostatic force acting on the following Dam.
b. Determine the location of this hydrostatic force along the plane A-B. Specific the
location from Point A. Create another sketch as necessary.
