Each individual person has at least one thing they believe in; it is one of the qualities of
being human. All people are different; therefore, each person has different values and beliefs that
make each person unique. In my case, it is family. I believe family is very important; they are
always there when difficult situations come up and can always be trusted. It may be hard to
realize it at first, but over time, it begins to become noticeable that family is always there when
they are needed the most. My family was with me through my childhood, moving to the U.S.,
and when I made the big decision to go to college. Family is extremely important and a big part
Throughout my childhood, I had many ups and downs. For as long as I can remember, I
was always left out most of the time by my classmates. All the students in my grade were very
outgoing and preferred to go to parties and hang out; I, on the other hand, was a very introverted
person who prioritized school. I did not like to go out a lot and preferred to work on homework
or read a book. As a result of these differences, I did not have any friends and was always alone.
I never told anybody about this, as I did not want anybody to worry about me. However, as time
went by and my situation became more complicated, I made the decision to tell my parents about
it. After telling them, they reassured me that I was okay the way I was and that it was okay for
me to like school more than going out. Thanks to them, I realized that I did not have to change

anything about myself and that it was okay to be different. Even if I did not have any friends, I
was happy for who I was and how I was. My family was understanding and patient with me; they
told me not to worry about it, and they made me feel reassured. I am happy I had their support
through the difficult times of my childhood and that they were there for me when I needed them.
One of the biggest events that have happened in my life was definitely moving to the
United States. I was 12 years old when it happened, and I was absolutely terrified of everything.
Everything was very different compared to the very small town in Mexico where I grew up, and I
disliked the sudden change. Since I did not know any English at all, it was scary not being able
to understand what people were saying. I felt pressured on the first day of school, and there was
nobody who spoke Spanish. Even after a couple of months passed, I still felt stressed, as my
grades in other classes were not good and the students in my grade were way ahead of what I
was learning at the school in my hometown. However, my family was there for me; they still
looked out for me even if they had bigger problems of their own. My parents did not have a job,
and my mother did not speak English at all. My entire family had to find a home and everything
that was needed on a daily basis. My brothers were having a hard time at school too, and it was
hard to fit in. There were days when I did not want to be here and just wanted to go back to my
home country. As time went by, my family and I began adjusting to the people as well as the
different surroundings. Even if the situation was difficult, staying together and supporting each
other helped overcome all of the problems each family member faced and this made my family
more united.
At the end of my junior year of high school, I was undecided about what to do after
graduating. My family was not in a very good financial situation, and it would be difficult for me
to attend college in the current situation, but I wanted to attend college. I had many conversations
with my parents regarding the issue, and they were honest with me; they would do as much as
they could to help me, but they did not want to give me high hopes. I understood, but I still
wanted to achieve a higher level of education and not give up; after all, the main reason for
moving to the United States was so that my brothers and I could have a good education. By the
middle of my senior year, I had begun applying to several colleges and scholarships. I received
their response by the end of my senior year, and it was good news; there was a chance I could go
to college, and I was extremely happy. After I graduated, I finally made the big decision and
decided to go to college. I had earned a scholarship and had saved enough money to attend UNK.
I told my family of my decision, and they were extremely supportive of me. I told my parents not
to worry; I would do everything I could not to worry them and pay for what was left of my
college expenses. My family told me to always ask them for help if I ever needed it, and they
would do anything they could to help me. I am happy and grateful for my family and their
support; therefore, I made it my goal to do everything possible to have good grades and graduate.
Even if it takes a long time to realize it, family is one of the few people that each person
can truly and always rely on. Trust and loyalty are always present in most families, and that
makes everybody more united. Life has many ups and downs, and sometimes what is needed is
just a little encouragement from somebody close. Personally, I believe everyone should realize
how wonderful it is to have people to call family. Because at the end of the day, there is a space
