CHAPTER 1

Introduction

The effects of academic stress on the academic performance of Senior High

School students.. As students move through senior high school, the responsibilities

placed on them academically increase, as well as the potential for academic stress.

Some signs of stress include anxiety, diminished motivation, and poor academic

performance. One of the reasons we may struggle in school is due to academic stress.

It not only has an impact on academic achievement but also on our own mental health,

causing anxiety and depression that may lead to suicidal thoughts. Lack of sleep is

one of the main struggle since many students need to review a lot for the quizzes and

activities that are given by the professors every day and it is one of the reason that

may be affecting the academic performance of Senior High school students. Having

anxiety due to being introduced to a new way of life in senior high school after years

of taking online classes; experiencing despair due to the pressure to study due to poor

academic performance. Stress is a common occurrence for students, especially when

it involves their academics. Students' never-ending workloads, parental pressure they

perceive, social commitments, and schoolwork are all sources of stress for them.

However, some students might be more vulnerable than others to the damaging

effects of stress. a mix of factors that are mental, emotional, and physical. The

significance of the study is that it will enlighten others

about the impact that stress would have on students' academic performance in the

classroom. It is the situations that a student encounters every time they attend to class.

The purpose of the study is to investigates how academic stress affects Senior High

School academic performance.

1.What are the factors of Academic Stress affecting the Productivity of the students?

2.What are the impact of Academic Stress to Academic Performance of the students

3.What are the strategies of the students to overcome Stress?

Significance of the Study

Academic stress has been linked to a variety of negative effects, including illness,

anxiety, depression, and poor academic performance.

The final outcome will be extremely beneficial to the following people:

To the Students. This research would be beneficial to the students because they will

know the negative of effect of stress on their studies and what coping methods they

should employ.

To the Teacher: This study will be beneficial to the teacher because they will be

alerted if they come across to a student who is experiencing stress or anxiety, which

will enable them to support the student as they work through their challenges with

their academic performance.

To the Parents: Like the teacher and instructors, the parents will be aware of the

difficulties and issues their children are dealing with, as well as how this impacts their

academic achievement.

To School Administrators: This will benefit them by generating a different school

activities for the students that will help lessen the potential stressful events in their

lives.

To the Future Researcher: It will be helpful for them if they need information that

can help them in their study. This can serve as a future reference.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on finding out the effects of Academic Stress in the

Academic Performance of the students. The Data collection will be conducted to

randomly selected 10 Senior High School students only in Rizal College of Taal. It is

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature

In this chapter, the Researcher presents the Review of related Literature and

studies which are found useful in the development of the study .

Local Literature

According to Mary Chris A. Austria-Cruz (2019) College students

face a variety of difficulties and challenges while working for their degrees, such as

anxiety, doubt, and struggle. Finding these issues helps the school's guidance and

counseling services by providing information on how to improve them. Stress can

have different causes and levels, and no one is immune to it. College students face a

variety of pressures in their academic life, such as parental expectations and

successes, homework, disagreements, and final papers. Failures can lead to stressors

such as interpersonal, academic, intrapersonal, and environmental. Many students are

able to maintain their grades with the help of friends, family, and/or campus stress,

but for some, the difficulties of college life seem to have serious emotional

difficulties. This study examines the origins, impacts, and coping mechanisms of

academic stress procedures for Filipino college students enrolling bachelor's degree

programs.

Another research article by Jewel Temario et.al.,(2020)This study

examined the impact of stress on the academic performance of Grade 12 General

Academic Strand students at Bestlink College of the Philippines during the 2019–

2020 school year. The study found that stress had an impact on the students' academic

performance in terms of classes, written exams, and performance assignments.

Academic stress is the strain placed on students while they work for their academic

goals, such as finishing schoolwork, assignments, and projects. Other factors, such as

xvi
RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL
Taal, Batangas

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

environmental, interpersonal, and social ones, may also negatively affect their

academic performance.

Jewel Temario et.al,.(2020).Ascendens Asia Singapore–Bestlink College

of the Philippines Journal of Multidisciplinary Research 2 (1), 2020 Stress develops

when an individual's capacity to deal with their circumstances is exceeded by the sum

of their internal and external demands. Depression, worry, and stress can potentially

derail these crucial years. Stress management skills among students have a very

significant impact on their academic performance and conduct. In terms of

attendance, written exams, and performance assignments, stress had an impact on the

students' academic performance. The body's response to a problem is stress. This

study identified the impact of stress, assisting students in solving their issues and

allowing them to take pleasure in their academic experience without worry or strain.

Academic stress describes the strain students have as it relates to their academics,

such as getting ready for exams and class

quizzes, finishing their coursework, assignments, and projects, understanding new

ideas and vocabulary, and adjusting to a new social environment. Students only

experience academic stress as a result of academic factors; however, other factors,

such as environmental, interpersonal, and social ones, may also negatively affect their

academic performance.

Jessa Marie A. Bernal et.al.,(2017)The Philippines' education system is

always being enhanced to deliver education of higher and higher quality. The

requirements students must meet in order to keep up with the academic demands that

may inevitably result in stress are included with the adjustments. Students may

experience stress for a variety of reasons, all of which were assessed in this study.

This study explored the association between students' stress levels and their academic

performance. 124 third-year college students from the University of the Immaculate

Conception's Bonifacio Campus participated in the study using a descriptive

correlation methodology. During the first term of the second semester of the academic

xvii
RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL
Taal, Batangas

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

year 2017–2018, the study was carried out. The findings showed that students were

mostly under stress as a result of their way of life and perceived academic pressure.

These findings also imply that students' stress levels have an impact on their academic

performance.

According to good therapy (2019) Many students experience

academic concerns throughout their academic careers, from elementary school to

college, including problems like bullying, underachievement, and teachers who don't

pay enough attention to their lessons. These concerns can also involve learning

impairments or disabilities. Academic worries may negatively affect a student's

performance in the classroom, but they are also likely to have a big impact on other

aspects of life, frequently putting a youngster under unnecessary stress and interfering

with their home, work, and play lives.

A student who is having academic issues of any kind could find it helpful to consult

with a mental health expert. Parents and teachers in the classroom may be able to spot

an academic issue early on if they keep track of any challenges the kids in their care

may be experiencing. As academic worries, especially those that go unacknowledged,

may have a long-lasting effect on a child's educational attitude, this mindfulness may

be of great use

to a child. For instance, a child who has reading difficulties in elementary school is

more

likely to continually perform below grade level throughout high school, at which

point it may be challenging for him or her to prepare for college-level work. A child's

mental health may also be impacted by issues in the classroom.

Foreign Literature

Subramani and Kadhiravan (2017) discovered a relationship between

academic stress and student mental health. He agreed that academic stress and mental

health are linked, and that pupils feel suffocated by the academic framework. Parents

xviii
RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL
Taal, Batangas

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

and schools place far too much pressure on pupils to achieve higher grades, which

demoralizes them; also, there is insufficient assistance from parents and schools in

terms of guidance. When students perform productively in academic venues, they are

mentally well. They also claimed that pupils at private schools are under more

pressure than students in public schools due to an abundance of homework and other

academic-related assignments. There was a significant disparity in the mental health

of kids from private and public schools. He asserted that students from private schools

have a different nurturing and vast exposure as compared to government school

students who belong to poor socio economic background and lack of exposure. This is

one of the reasons for the escalation of stress.

Academic stress, according to Kaur (2014), has a negative impact on

youngsters' mental health. Girls experiencing academic stress were found to have

poorer mental health than boys. According to the study, parents sometimes put

pressure and strain on their children, which leads to poor mental health.

Khan and Kausar (2013) indicated that stress had a deleterious impact on

academic performance, while no significant differences were detected based on

gender. The distinction between junior and senior students was obvious. Stress,

without a doubt, has an impact on one's capacity to study properly and manage one's

time. Regular study is vital since it relieves academic strain and helps people achieve

their goals.

Bataineh (2013) examined academic pressures encountered by university students

in his study. The findings of the analysis revealed that unreasonable academic

overload, insufficient study time due to the enormous course content being covered,

high family expectations, and low motivation levels are some of the causes of stress.

Fear of failing is another major source of stress. There was no substantial difference

between students with various specialities.

Dimitrov (2017) argued in his study that stress can be alleviated by

ensuring that students prioritize their well-being. Some areas to concentrate on are

xix
RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL
Taal, Batangas

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

food, exercise, work, and recreation. He also found that the educational system is

primarily concerned with academic qualifications and does not contribute enough to

students' entire development. Students are frequently conditioned in such a way that

they are afraid to take on new difficulties since the emphasis is solely on academics

rather than the mental growth of a go-getter. There are few options for educational

medium.English being the only option available can pose as a hindrance for the

students from rural background. There are not many courses available that are

employment centric. Fresh graduates need more communication skills development

for better placements.

Synthesis

Based on the related literature gathered, stress definitely impacts the student’s

academic performance in a negative way. Negative emotional, cognitive, behavioral

and physiological processes that occur as a person tries to adjust to or deal with

stress's effect of stress is understood in many walks of life with diverse populations

especially among students. This problem resulted in the students poor Academic

Performance. To overcome this problem and difficulties, different strategies are used

for this. This thought was supported by various researchers a.nd strengthened by the

researchers about factors of Academic Stress that affects the Productivity of the

students

Research Methodology and Procedures

This Chapter includes the Research Design, The participants of the

study, profile of the participants,The Research Instrument, Preparation and Validation

of the Instrument and the data gathering procedures to complete the research.

Research Design

The method used by researcher to conduct this study is qualitative in nature

with a phenomenological study. This study aims to determine what are the factors of

academic stress that affecting the productivity of the students. The researchers used

qualitative method to gathered different information opinion and experiences from the

respondents by interviewing them. This research study include interview, collecting

data, and analization.Phenomenological study is used as a method to gain in-depth

understanding and information about peoples experiences. This kind of method aims

to get better grasp and live experiences about the topic. Qualitative study uses by the

researchers by getting opinions to their phenomena. Its explore deeper insight and

observation about the data and experiences of the respondents. Thus, the main

purpose of the study is to know what are the effects of academic stress to the

academic performance and productivity of the students of Rizal College of

Taal.Phenomenology refers to the philosophical study of the structure of an

individual's consciousness and general subjective experience.

This technique is generally used to examine lived insight, get a superior

handle of how individuals think, and expand a specialist's point of view on a theme.

Subsequently, the fundamental reason for the review is to recognize, assess, and

xxi

decipher the apparent variables influencing understudies' inclinations for web based

learning, eminently among Rizal College of Taal Senior High School students.

Respondents of the Study

Ten students were chosen as respondents in this qualitative research from a total

population of senior high school students at Rizal College of Taal. The sampling

method used in this study was selected based on three criteria: time, population, and

data collection efficiency. This study will be conducted at Rizal College of Taal,

located at Calle G. Marella, Taal, Batangas. The researcher chose the place of

implementation because it will give the researcher the needed information.

Following additional evaluation, the study employs the purposive sampling technique.

Purposive sampling, also known as selective or subjective sampling, is a type of

non-probability sampling in which researchers choose people from the public to be

their respondents. Purposive sampling occurs when researchers carefully consider

how they will create a sample population, even if it is statistically unrepresentative of

the larger population. Researchers are convinced that these individuals fit the profile

they are looking for in participants.

Profile of Participants

In this part, tabular and textual presentations are used to provide a clear and

detailed explanation of the summary of the profile of respondents/participants

involved in this study.

Research Instrument

In this study, the researcher will be using the questionnaire. According to

Jane Sutton (2015), the effective way to collect data for a qualitative research is to do

an interview or focus group and taking handwritten notes or video-recording. In this

research, the researcher used to take down notes while doing the interview to collect

and gather the data.

Preparation and Validation of the Instrument

To prepare the questionnaire about exploring the effect of academic stress

on STEM students' academic performance in grade 11, the researchers created a

first draft. This draft was then submitted to their adviser for corrections,

suggestions, and revisions. The researchers incorporated the changes to create a

second draft, which was submitted again to their adviser for checking. The final

draft of the questionnaire was created by revising it according to the suggestions

made by the adviser. The final draft contained all the revisions suggested by the

experts and was revised by the researchers. This process ensured that the

xxv

questionnaire was well prepared and validated before it was used for data

collection.

Data Gathering Procedures

The Researcher gathered data and experiences from the selected participants

through the use of a data collection method, which is an Interview. In qualitative re-

search, an interview is the process of gathering information from a sample of respon-

dents through their answers to the asked questions. This is used to quickly acquire

data from a large sample. A questionnaire is the instrument used to gather the most

thorough and precise data. This tool contains a set of questions or other prompts de-

signed for encouraging a group of individuals to share information. The most popular

sort of interview is conducted using the questionnaire approach, which involves giv-

ing respondents a written list of questions to respond to. Questionnaires are only use-

ful if the respondents answers have a thorough understanding of the topic and are able

to respond to all of the inquiries. The majority of these questions are close-ended, al-

lowing for the easy collection of information. With a questionnaire, gathering a lot of

information can be completed in a short period of time. This skills will help in im-

proving good study results. Furthermore, using this method will help in achieving the

objective of doing high-quality research with reliable results.

CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

In this chapter, the Researcher presents, analyze, and interprets the data

gathered from the survey conducted. This chapter also covers a lot of ground that

leads to the fulfillment of the findings of the phenomenological study on student's ex-

perience on the factors that affects their Academic performance.

1.What are the factors of Academic Stress affecting the productivity of the stu-

dents?

Theme 1:Factors of Academic Stress affecting the productivity of the students

1.1 Workloads: Academic Activities Many students experience a pile of academic

activities. Heavy workloads can cause stress, burnout, decreased motivation, and poor

mental health in students. It may affect the students performance in school because of

the pressure on the due date of the activities. Piled-up activities can lead to panic

among the students, which may cause low marks in school.

"Overloads of work do affect my productivity for the reason that they stress me

out, so I start to cram and rush my work" (P1). "The modern factors of academic

stress that affect the student's productivity are that, as a student that is experiencing

xxvii
RIZAL COLLEGE OF TAAL
Taal, Batangas

academic stress, it always slows down my productivity. It affects the way I do things

that actually matter" (P4). "The factors of academic stress that affect my productivity

are the overload of work, exams and tests, academic pressure, and lack of knowledge

about the topic" (P6). "Lots of academic work do affect my productivity because I fin-

ish the work faster than may result in bad productivity" (P10).

According to Conley and French (2014), moderate academic demands can mo-

tivate students and lead to higher levels of achievement. However, according to

Dervin and Risquez (2015), an excessively heavy workload can result in stress,

burnout, and poor academic performance.According to the research conducted by Ca-

vanagh et al. in 2016, the impact of workload on academic performance varies de-

pending on the type of tasks assigned. In their study, it was observed that heavy writ-

ing assignments had a more significant effect on academic performance compared to

heavy reading assignments. Therefore, educators and institutions should consider the

specific types of tasks when designing and assigning workloads to students to opti-

mize their academic outcomes.

1.2 Poor Time Management: Many students, especially in senior high school, expe-

rience heavy workloads because of poor time management. They don't use their time

properly, so they get piled up with school work. Poor time management can lead to

academic pressure because students do their activities the day before the due date.

"Pressure of combining home responsibilities and school work and having

poor time management, and difficulty oraganizing work "(P2). "I guess the factor that

greatly affects my productivity is my poor time management. I usually put more time

into the not-so-important things than the important ones" (P8). "One of the factors

that affect my productivity is heavy workloads; if I have too much work, staying on

xxviii

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

top of everything and making progress can be challenging. Another factor is poor

time management and personal problems" (P9).

According to N. A. M. Razali (2018)'s study aimed to explore the relationship

between time management and academic achievement among students. Through fac-

tor analysis, three main factors of time management were identified: time planning,

time attitudes, and time wasting. The study found that gender and race did not signifi-

cantly affect time management behaviors, while differences were observed based on

the year of study and faculty. Overall, all aspects of time management were positively

related to academic achievement, with time planning showing the strongest correla-

tion. These findings emphasize the importance of effective time management for stu-

dents' academic success.

2.What is the impact of academic stress on the academic performance of stu-

dents? Theme 2:Impact of Academic Stress on the Academic Performance of the

Students 2.1 Developing Anxiety and Pressure: Students today feel anxious about

tests and other workload activities. The anxiety can trigger various symptoms, such as

a racing heart, sweating, or difficult breathing. Students respond that academic stress

affects their academic performance and can cause anxiety, pressure, and other factors

that can lead to dropping out of school. There are times that they lose motivation to

keep going and make an effort to reach their goals.

"One of the impacts of academic stress on my academic performance is that

sometimes it gives me anxiety. I lose my confidence and my focus whenever I am aca-

demically stressed." (P1). "The academic stress affects my productivity to do all the

tasks given, and it also affects my grade in achieving a positive outcome" (P6). "The

impact of academic stress on my academic performance is that it increases anxiety

and worry and decreases motivation.I may feel less motivated to do my work" (P9).

xxix

Anoushka Thakkar (2018) claims that excessive levels of academic stress can

lead to a rise in the prevalence of psychological and physical issues like depression,

anxiety, nervousness, and stress-related problems, which might then affect students'

academic performance. Another study that supports this statement, as stated by

Alexandra G. Parker (2019), is that the impact of losing confidence and focus is that

students frequently self-report experiencing ongoing stress related to their education,

which we refer to as academic-related stress, such as pressure to achieve high grades

and concerns about receiving poor grades.

2.2 Reduces activeness: Students didn't pass their homework and activities on time

because of the effects of the academic stress on their mental health. Activeness in

school activities can lead to a low academic grade for the students, which can cause

anxiety for them.

"Having misunderstandings in the lessons, having difficulty keeping up with the

lessons, and getting confused by the activities and assignments" (P2). "The impacts of

academic stress on my academic performance vary a lot; it can affect the way I do

schoolwork, which affects my grades" (P4). "The impact of academic stress on my

academic performance is that I am not able to be active during classes, and there are

times that I'm losing motivation to keep going and make an effort to do things" (P7).

"It can result in low academic performance, and it can affect the understanding of

students academics" (P10).

According to Michaela C. Pascoe (2019), many students in the tertiary and sec-

ondary schools face extreme stressors due to their academic demands. She said that

academic stress can reduce academic achievement, decrease motivation, and increase

the risk of dropping out of school. And pressure to do activities and get high marks in

school.

3.What are the strategies of students to overcome stress?

Theme 3: The strategies of students to overcome stress.

3.1 Time Management. Stress is a common issue among senior high school stu-

dents. With the increasing academic pressure, extracurricular activities, and social

life, students often find themselves struggling to cope with stress. However, several

strategies helped them overcome their stress.Time management is very crucial. Stu-

dents should prioritize their tasks and allocate sufficient time for each activity. This

can help them avoid last-minute cramming and reduce stress levels.

"I manage my time effectively. I set a specific goal to achieve within the day,

and I immediately do my schoolwork to avoid overload" (P6). "My strategies to over-

come my stress are trying to be organized and having time management to avoid

cramming or stress during deadlines. I also tend to overcome stress by studying in ad-

vance to gain knowledge and being active during class" (P7).

According to Neil Shah (2016), good time management is essential if you are to

handle a heavy workload without excessive stress. Time management helps you re-

duce long-term stress by giving you direction when you have too much work to do. It

puts you in control of where you are going and helps you increase your productivity.

By being efficient in your use of time, you should enjoy your current work more and

find that you can maximize the time outside work to relax and enjoy life. Poor time

management is a major cause of stress. I’m sure we have all had the feeling that there

is too much to do and not enough time. We can start to feel panicky and anxious and

lose focus. It’s important to note that you can have this feeling even if there’s hardly

anything to do at all.

3.2 Quality Time: Having their so-called "me time" can ease their stress. Listening to

music, playing instruments, painting, and enjoying entertainment can reduce stress.

They also stated that having emotional support or a strong bond with their loved ones

is very important for them to ease their stress, such as seeking support from family,

xxxi

friends, or counselors. Talking about one's problems with someone who understands

can provide emotional relief.

"I listen to songs, especially worship songs" (P5). "I overcome my stress with

entertainment. Entertainment helps me to just go with the flow and let your stress

come free with it too. Also, my family and friends help me during my bad times by giv-

ing me moral support, which can aid my stress all the time." (P1).

Vikas(2021) stated Modern life is fast-paced and sometimes stressful, and most

people can tell us that the best way to relieve stress is to go on a vacation alone or

with a partner away from city life and spend some quality relaxing time. However,

few people realize that spending time with your family and having fun is a perfect

way to reduce your overall stress level. Whether it’s a sudden illness, financial prob-

lems, or disagreements over a topic, every family will experience stress at some point.

Families that are prepared for these difficult times tend to be much stronger and better

prepared to cope with challenges that might arise. Spending time with family is such

an important

part of living a complete and fulfilling life. Remember the family does not always

have to be blood relatives. Close friends, a guardian, or step-siblings all fall into the

category of “family"

Based on the previously stated information, the researcher leads to the following

conclusions:

1. The researchers concluded that the factors affecting the productivity of the

senior high school students are heavy workloads and poor time management.

2. Researchers came to the conclusion that students are experiencing anxiety and

at the same time they feel pressured and it can affect their performances in school like

their activeness in participating in Academic activities.

3. The researchers came to their conclusion that having effective time

management skills and giving themselves quality time were the most effective

strategies to reduce their stress associated to academic activities.

Recommendation

Taking the previous finding and conclusion into consideration, the researchers

therefore make the following recommendations:

1. Students recommend developing a list of what has to be done each week,

scheduling it properly to avoid workload activities, and then allocating time to each

task to enhance time management.

2. Researchers recommended that students should use various strategies, such as deep

breathing exercises and meditation, to prevent over thinking and academic pressure.

3. Researchers recommended to students to always manage their time properly to

avoid workload-related activities and spend some quality relaxing time with their

loved ones to reduce their overall stress level

4. Researchers recommend joining a stress management program to enhance and

develop different coping strategies to overcome stress and attending stress-free

seminars.
