BREATHING EXERCISES

Breathing exercises are a form of


exercise that can be used for a variety of health
related reasons.eg: to enhance the respiratory
system by improving ventilation; strengthening
respiratory muscles; make breathing more
efficient and for stress reduction.
BREATHING EXERCISES
 There are two exercises that can be useful for
people with respiratory disorders.

Diaphragmatic
Purse lip breathing

PURSE LIP BREATHING
EXERCISES
 Steps
✓ Sit in a comfortable posture , relax neck and
shoulder muscles
✓ Breathe in slowly through the nose like smell
a rose
✓ Purse the lip like blowing whistle

✓ Breathe out slowly for 4 seconds through
pursed lips like blowing out a candle
✓ Continue to inhale and exhale for a minimum
of 10 minutes.

 Steps
❖ Step1- While sitting or lying down with
shoulders relaxed . Put a hand on the chest and
place the other hand on the abdomen.
❖ Step2 - Take a breathe in slowly through the
nose , so that the stomach moves out (feeling
stomach move outward ).

❖ Step3 -Purse the lips and breath out slowly
through mouth ,pressing lightly on the
stomach.
❖ Continue to inhale and exhale for a minimum
of 10 minutes.
COUGHING EXERCISES
Many patients with respiratory disorders
have developed inadequate coughing pattern , do
not adequately clear the airways off sputum.
➢ coughing is a basic airway clearance
technique.
➢ clearing airways helps to breathe better and
also lowers the chance for infection.

CONTROLLED COUGHING
TECHNIQUE
 Sit on a chair or at the edge of the bed with both
feet on the floor.
 Lean slightly forward Fold the arms across the
abdomen, breathe in slowly through the nose.
 Lean forward , pressing against abdomen, cough
2 to 3 times through slightly open mouth.
 Rest
 Perform again , if needed .
CONTROLLED COUGHING
TECHNIQUE
HUFFING TECHNIQUE
 Sit up straight with chin slightly tilted up and
mouth open .
 Take a deep slow breathe .
 Hold breath for 2 to 3 seconds.
 Exhale forcefully and make a “ huff ” sound.
 Huff 2 to3 times as you breathe out .
 Relax for few seconds .
 Repeat the steps if needed.
