3 Safety information

3.1 General safety information

Viscosity measurements normally require very constant sample temperatures which are

stabilized by means of laboratory thermostats. Hazards arise from this due to very high or very

low measuring temperatures, due to fire and the general hazards arising from the application of

electrical energy. The user is extensively protected by the application of the relevant standards.

Further hazard sources can arise from the type of material for which the temperature is to be

stabilized or from the sample to be measured, e.g. upon exceeding certain temperature thresholds

or with the fracture of the capillary and reaction with the tempering liquid.

In some cases hazardous liquids are used as solvents and cleaning agents when measuring

viscosity with the IVS. Here, it is essential to follow the instructions given in the safety data sheet

for the hazardous substances.

In particular, when filling and emptying the viscometer and the reservoir and waste containers,

suitable protective gloves and goggles must be worn. Before putting the device into operation, all

tubing connections must be tightened to ensure there is no leakage.

Before any servicing operation or conversion all hazardous liquid residues must be removed as

completely as possible.

The device may only be used as intended, that is as described in these operating instructions.

This includes operation exclusively by instructed specialist personnel.

It is not feasible to include all possible situations. They remain essentially subject to the

judgment and responsibility of the user or operator.

3.2 Pause in operation

To prevent serious damage of the IVS caused by vapor of chemical aggressive solutions, the

glass viscometer should be removed after any measurement.

45
If your stand is connected to the main controller successfully, it will be showed in the status bar

as is shown in figure 4.11.1, or else it will be showed in status bar as is shown in figure 4.11.2.

During the measurement, it will be showed at delay state in status bar as is shown in figure

4.11.3 if you select the delaying measurement for keeping the sample in the target temperature in

order to getting the precise measurement result. After the delay status ended, it will enter the

measuring statuses which are the lifting status as is shownin figure 4.11.4 where the sample is

pushed into the main measuring glass ball via the main capillary and the emptying status as is

shown in figure4.11.5 where the sample falls by its gravity until it is terminated via the main

capillary.

6.12 The measurement result report

The measuring report has two main kinds report formats. One is the usual measurement and the

other is the serial extrapolation measurement report.

6.12.1 The usual measurement report

The usual measurement report as is shown in figure 4.12.1 consists of basic sample information,
measurement methods, deviation type, HC value, mean flow time, flow time, solvent viscosity,
relative viscosity, viscosity number, intrinsic viscosity and mean molecular weight. But some
measurement methods may not have the relative viscosity and viscosity number such as the
solvent measurement, kinetic viscosity and capillary correction.

46
Figure 4.12.1 IVS300’s usual measurement report
The sample information contains the sample ID, sample Name, tester, capillary type, capillary

ID, capillary constant, the sample concentration and the solvent viscosity if it needs.

Measurement type is the measurement method. Deviation value is the deviation type you select

and its real value. HC is the flow time correction if you select the HC operation.

The mean time is the average of the main measurement time.

The flow time is all the main measurement flow time.

Relative viscosity is the ratio of the sample viscosity and solvent viscosity.

The viscosity number is the ratio of the relative viscosity of sample minus one and the sample

concentration.

47
The intrinsic viscosity is the measurement method you want to acquire.

The mean molecular weight is you want to get by Mark-Howink formula.

Then you can print this result by printer, or save this as a bmp figure.

6.12.2 The serial extrapolation measurement report

The serial extrapolation measurement report consists of real coefficient of correlation,

measurement time, Sample’s name, solvent viscosity, capillary constant, sample concentration,

sample viscosity, logarithm sample viscosity, gradient 1 and gradient 2, intrinsic 1 and intrinsic 2,

mean molecular weight 1 and mean molecular weight 2 if you want to get the mean molecular

weight by Mark-Howink formula as is shown in figure 4.12.2. Then you can print this result by

printer, or save this result as a bmp figure .

6.13 Debug tool

We provide a debug tool as is shown in figure for user to detect our stand if it does not work

well. You can use this tool to detect the fibre-optical which it needs the fibre-optical detection

result must between in 30 and 100 with the stand which is without capillary. If this result is not in

this range, the stand may not work efficiently. We also provide a tool to change the stand unit

number for reparation or user-define stand unit number according some instructions such as no

two stand unit number are equal, stand unit number is larger than 6 and smaller than 1, you had

better set the stand unit number in the range of your equipment supported most..

7. Measurement

7.1 Preparing for a measurement

Insert the selected and filled capillary into the IVS stand. The capillary can be used either with a

stand or without a stand.

7.2 Starting the measurement

After you configure the IVS300 and connect the stand to the main controller, then you can turn

on the power and can run the IVS300 program. If your configurations are right and hard ware

works well, you can do your measurement. Before the real measurement, you must wait the water

tank’s temperature must reach to your setting point, or else your measurement will not be

reasonable.

7.3 Intrinsic Viscosity Measurement

7.3.1 Basic settings for measurement

All settings are saved into basic setting file which is named as “inputparm.ini” in the installation

path and automatic imported by the last setting. You need to check the setting or your

measurement mission before starting the test.

All the measurement methods in IVS300 all need this basic measurement setting which is

showed as follows.

7.3.1.1 Measurement Type

There are 14 measurement types in IVS300 which are Kinematic viscosity measurement,

Dynamic viscosity measurement, Relative viscosity measurement, Capillary Correction, Maron

Viscosity measurement, K-value measurement, Solomon-Ciuta measurement, Schulz-Blaschke

measurement, Bill-Meyer measurement, Huggins measurement, Solvent viscosity measurement,

50
PVPK measurement, Polymerized measurement and Serial extrapolation measurement.

We can select an appropriate measurement methods for our testing task by following
some ISO standard or other standards as is shown in figure 5.3.1.

Figure 5.3.1 IVS300’s measurement methods

7.3.1.2 HC

HC means energy correction. We can select this for energy correction which may make the

result more precise for the lack of appropriate capillary or the flow time is too small according to

the standard reference. If we select the HC, all the measurement result will be compute by HC, or

else the result will not compute as is shown in figure 5.3.2.

Figure 5.3.2 IVS300’s HC setting

7.3.1.3 Delay time

This value is integer by minute. If you need to set this value for your sample which is larger

than 0, this test will be delayed. If your sample’s temperature is not equal to the measuring

temperature, you need to set this value for getting a precise flow time and test result as is shown in

figure 5.3.3.

51
Figure 5.3.3 IVS300’s Delay setting

7.3.1.4 Sample Name

Sample Name means the sample name for your measurement which can be used as the query

condition for the query result as is shown in figure 5.3.4.

Figure 5.3.4 IVS300’s Sample Name setting

7.3.1.5 Sample ID

Sample ID means the sample ID for your measurement which can be used as the query condition

for the query result as is shown in figure 5.3.5.

Figure 5.3.5 IVS300’s Sample ID setting

7.3.1.6 Tester

Tester is the people who charges this measurement and which can be used as the query condition

for the query result as is shown in figure 5.3.6.

Figure 5.3.6 IVS300’s Tester Name setting

7.3.1.7 T1

T1 is the time value which the liquid consumes from the upper fibre-optical to the half of the

upper crystal ball in seconds. If this value is too small, it will lead to failure. The liquid may not

pass by the upper fibre-optical after the valves are opened under this condition. If this value is too

large, the liquid will outflow from the main tube or the flow time may not be precise. This value is

between 1.4 and 1.6 seconds for default measurement as is shown in figure 5.3.7.

52
Figure 5.3.7 IVS300’s additional lifting time setting

7.3.1.8 T2

T2 is the time value which the liquid consumes from the lower fibre-optical to the stop state. If

this value is too small, the liquid will be still in the capillary which may block the capillary. If this

value is too large, it will enlarge the total measurement time and decrease the measurement

efficiency. This value is 45 seconds for default measurement as is shown in figure 5.3.8.

Figure 5.3.8 IVS300’s additional emptying time setting

7.3.1.9 PP

PP is the value for pumping the liquid to the main measurement crystal ball. If this value is too

small, the liquid will not be pumped into the main measurement ball which can lead to the test

failed. If this value is too large, the liquid will be pumped out of the main capillary or it will lead

to the upper fibre-optical’s error detection which may lead to the test failure as is shown in figure

5.3.9.

Figure 5.3.9 IVS300’s pump gear setting

7.3.1.10 Pre-nums

This value is the prepare measurements for the sample which is used for temperature steady and

rises the capillary. This value is 2 as default and reference which must be between 0 and 9. If this

value is too large, it will make the sample change its characteristic and may influence the main

measurement or enlarge total measurement time as is shown in figure 5.3.10.

53
Figure 5.3.10 IVS300’s pre-measurement number setting

7.3.1.11 Main-nums

This value is the main measurements for the sample measurement. This value is 3 as default and

reference which must be between 1 and 9. If this value is too large, it will make the sample change

its characteristic and may influence the measurement result or enlarge total measurement time as

is shown in figure 5.3.11.

Figure 5.3.11 IVS300’s main measurement number setting

7.3.1.12 Capillary ID

This value is capillary ID you selected for measurement as is shown in figure 5.3.12.

Figure 5.3.12 IVS300’s Capillary ID setting

7.3.1.13 Capillary constant

This value is the capillary specific parameter is used for the subsequent computation as is

shown in figure 5.3.13.

7.3.1.14 Capillary Type

This value identifies the capillary’s usage as is shown in figure 5.3.14.

You can click the right button to select the capillary parameters.

Figure 5.3.14 IVS300’s capillary type setting

54
7.3.1.15 The concentration of the sample

Figure 5.3.15 IVS300’s Sample concentration setting

We use the concentration of sample in most measurement. The concentration of sample is in

two forms as is shown in figure5.3.15. We can input the mass and volume of sample for getting

the concentration at most time. We can input the concentration for short for dynamic viscosity

measurement.

7.3.1. 16 The solvent viscosity

Figure 5.3.16 IVS300’s solvent viscosity setting

We use the solvent viscosity in most measurement except the solvent viscosity and kinematic
viscosity measurement as is shown in figure 5.3.16. The solvent viscosity is in two forms as is
shown in figure. We can input the solvent viscosity by hand or import the solvent data from the
database by clicking the right button.

7.3.1.17 The volume correction due to temperature changing

enormous

Figure 5.3.17 IVS300’s volume correction setting

The sample’s volume may be change in different temperatures, so we can select the volume

correction for our measurement as is shown in figure 5.3.17. If we need volume correction, we

must select the volume correction and input the 20 Celsius volume (20 ml for example), target

Celsius (35 Celsius and its volume is 20.5 ml), so the volume correction parameter is

20.5/20=1.025, and then you need to input the mass and volume or the concentration of sample in

20 Celsius.

55
7.3.1.18 The Mark-Howink parameter for computing the mean

molecular weight

Figure 5.3.18 IVS300’s Mark-Howink parameter setting

If your measurement needs to acquire the mean molecular weight, you must select the Mark-

Howink and input its parameter k and α as is shown in figure 5.3.18. When measurement is

finished, the mean molecular weight will be showed in the measurement report.

7.3.1.19 The result correction methods

Figure 5.3.19 IVS300’s result correction setting

There is some deviation in sample measurement due to the inappropriate capillary or the

capillary is corroded as is shown in figure 5.3.19. We must select one method to correct the result

in order to acquire the effective test result. There are two methods in IVS300 software. The first

one is the absolute correction which is set zero as default. The other one is the ratio correction

which is set one as default and this value must not be set as zero or less than zero or else you will

get wrong measurement result. Please select one of the correction methods as your measurement

needs.

7.3.1.20 sample concentration for serial extrapolation measurement

56
Figure 5.3.20 IVS300’s sample concentration for serial extrapolation measurement

IVS300 supports the serial extrapolation measurement with ten samples at most as is shown in

figure 5.3.20. The concentration of the samples in your test sequence must keep the concentration

in ascending order or else the test result may be not precise. This method needs at least three

samples, if you want to set more than three samples to do your measurement, please input its

concentration and select them according to its concentration order. When you do your

measurement, you must measure the samples according your settings.

7.3.1.21 The specific parameter for sample measurement

Figure 5.3.21 IVS300’s specific parameter setting

In some conditions, the measurement method needs the specific parameter to compute its

intrinsic viscosity by different samples you measured as is shown in figure 5.3.21.

All the measurement methods in IVS300 need the basic settings for your test, as is shown in

figure 5.3.22.

Figure 5.3.22 IVS300 basic setting for measurement

7.3.1.22 The correlation coefficient

The correlation coefficient is used for serial extrapolation measurement which will make the
result more precise with its default range in 0.85 to 1.0 as is shown in figure 5.3.23.

9 Some factors may affect the experiment:

9.1 Requirements for the viscosity tub

a. Keep clean and dry. Clean the tube outer wall with alcohol, make sure good light
transmission and no solvent residue
b. The new viscosity tube should be soaking in the dichromic acid lotion before using.
c. The flowing time for the solvent in the viscosity tube should be kept in 90 – 120 seconds.

9.2 Requirements for the solvent

a. Phenol: easy to crystallize and absorb water, which has bubbles. Do not use if there are big
bubbles. Dissolved it at the temperature of 50 ℃ if the pheno l crystallized.
b. Place the new configuration of phenol: tetrachloroethane solvent on a magnetic stirrer at 25
degree temperatures. Place the solvent 24 hours to make sure it’s stable before use.
Do not use the solvent which has placed 30 days or more.
c. The solvent should go through the 600 mesh stainless steel mesh or G2 sand cored funnel
before added into the viscosity tube.
Do not use the same filter for solvents and solutions. Clean and dry the filter if used the same
one.

9.3 Requirements for the sample

a. Moisture treatment of the sample: crushed the sample, add acetone to do surface treatment.
Place the sample in the oven 10-15 minutes at the temperature 100 degree.
b. Weighing accuracy: Put the dried sample in desiccator. Using five-digit balance, up to 0.01 mg.
c. Deduct the amount of additives.
d. We suggest using the METTLER TOLEDO or Wantong pipette at the temperature of 20-25
degree.
If using the volumetric flask to configure the solvent, the temperature can be at 20 degrees.
e. Dissolving the sample under certain temperature. Over high temperature will causes the
polymer
f. degrades, while low temperature will cause dissolution incompletely.
g. Checking the dissolving solvent, make sure there is granule or water exists.
h. Dissolving the sample in certain time, in case the polymer degrades. Don’t using high speed
stirrer.

9.4 Requirements for the viscometer

a. Using absorbent cotton and anhydrous ethanol to clean the optical fiber part. Toothbrush with
anhydrous ethanol can be applied if necessary.
145
b. Check the thermostat temperature before measuring.
c. Place the measuring part in the water bath 15 minutes before measuring. (Make the sample
solvent temperature reaches the water bath temperature)
d. Calibrate the water bath by using 1/100 thermometer regular. Calibration should be done under
the stable temperature.
e. Viscosity tube verticality:≦3 degree . Put the measuring unit correctly.
f. At least runs one pretesting to soaks the viscosity tube. By do this, we can reduce the errors of
flowing time.
g. IF YOU CANCLED MEASURING PROGRESS, DO NOT START THE SECOND
MEASURING BEFORE THE SOLUTION BACK TO THE BOTTOM.
h. The bath preparation requires clear, no bubbles and particles pollutants. Change the bath
preparation if polymer solution drops into the bath; If using deionized water as bath
preparation, adding 0.1% sodium carbonate to prevent rusty.
Heated to 60 degrees to eliminate the bubbles before use.

10 User guide for maintenance

10.1 Thermostat water bath maintenance

a. Adding ethanediol and water at the volume of 1:1. It can control the growing of
microorganism. Or change the water every 15 days.
b. Drain the water of the tank when the instrument is not using for a short period of time.
c. When the instrument is not used for a short period of time, drain the liquid in the tank
d. Please turn off the LED light when the instrument is running but not measuring, to save the
life time of LED.
e. Keep an eye on the liquid level of chamber, adding the liquid timely. Adding before the low
liquid level alarm sounded
f. Clean the thermostat control system regular.

10.2 TFC through-flow coolers maintenance

a. The TFC through-flow cooler runs must under the circumstances of water condition. Note:
Turns on the water bath first then turns on the cooler system.
While the experiment finished, turns off the cooler system first then turns off the water bath.
b. Clean the cooler system regular.
c. Leave space for the cooler system heat dissipation surface, do not against the wall.

146
10.3 Measuring unit maintenance

a. Using absorbent cotton and anhydrous ethanol to clean the optical fiber part. Toothbrush with
anhydrous ethanol can be applied if necessary.
b. Do not upside down or lying the measuring unit, when it is taking out from the thermostat.
c. In case the solution flow backward into LED light.
d. If there is a waste liquor bottle connected to the measuring unit, please make sure the two
windpipes do not reach the bottom of the bottle.
e. Considering the long usage of viscosity tube sealing block may have bad sealing performance.
Please replace the sealant.
