(2) Solution with separate boundaries of various components (B) Physical change
For question numbers 11-15, two statements are given- one labeled Assertion (A) and the other labeled
Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) as given
below:

material for CBSE, NCERT, JEE (main), NEET-UG and NDA exams.
11. Assertion (A): Aerated drink contains carbon dioxide gas as solute and water as a solvent.
Reason (R): Air is a mixture of gas in gas which main constitutes is oxygen (21%) and nitrogen (78%).
12. Assertion (A): Two liquids A and B having differences in their boiling point can be separated by fraction
distillation.
Reason (R): Only two immiscible liquid is separated by fraction distillation.
13. Assertion (A): Anil's sister added some water to a bottle of olive oil. Anil helps his sister to separate the
water from olive oil.
Reason (R): Anil uses the separating funnel to separate the mixture of olive oil and water.
14. Assertion (A): Impure benzoic acid can be purified by sublimation.
Reason (R): Benzoic acid sublimes on heating.
15. Assertion (A): A mixture of acetone and methanol can be separated by fractional distillation.
Reason (R): The difference between their boiling points is very less.
Solution
the reverse is true. An increase in temperature decreases both solubility and rate of solution.
So, statement A and D correct.
A way to measure solubility is to determine the maximum mass of solute that can be dissolved
in 100 grams of solvent at a particular temperature. So, statement B correct.
Sodium chloride, NaCl, is a soluble salt. The solubility of sodium chloride is 36 g/100 mL water
at 25oC. So, statement B incorrect.
10. (b) are both chemical processes
Explanation: The cooking of food and digestion of food are both chemical process as in both chemical
reaction takes place.
11. (d) A is false but R is true.
Explanation: Areated drink contains carbon dioxide had as a solvent and water as a solute.
12. (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation: To separate a mixture of two or more miscible liquids for which the difference in boiling
points is less than 25 K, a fractional distillation process is used, for example, for the separation of
different gases from the air, different factions from petroleum products, etc.
13. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: A separating funnel can be used to separate the components of the mixture of immiscible
liquids. Oil and water are two immiscible liquids and forms two different layers in a separating funnel.
14. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Benzoic acid sublimes on heating while impurities do not.

15. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Whenever the difference in boiling points of two liquids is less than 25oC they are
separated by fractional distillation.
16. (a) 30% zinc and 70% copper
17. (d) iodine in alcohol
18. (b) water is solvent and sugar is solute
19. (a) 1 nm in diameter
20. (a) Pure substances contain only one kind of particle.
