College vs. High School: Differences and Similarities

Many students can’t wait for high school to end and college to start which is
associated with freedom, friends, living without parents and a chance to take
control over your life. Most people admit that in college they’ve entered adult
life.

We won’t talk about adulthood here – as it’s not the time for tedious matters –
we are going to compare the differences and similarities of life in high school
and college instead. What should you expect from each? What are the main
challenges of each? Is college academically hard? Let’s go straight to business.

Comparing Two Milestones of Student Life

So, you want to move out of your parents’ house as quickly as possible to have
fun and attend parties, as you’ve heard these are the only things college students
do. However, this is not actually true.

Obviously, there are a lot of differences between studying in high school and in
college. To help you figure out what they are, we’ve prepared the lists that are
divided into categories determined by different spheres and aspects of both
academic levels.
Studying Process
While high school studying process might seem difficult, many students find
studying in college more challenging due to lack of self-motivation.

High School:

 You attend all the scheduled classes

 You have a lot of classes a day

 You are obligated to be in school and do your homework

College:

 You schedule your classes the way you want

 You choose classes which you long to learn

 Attending classes and completing assignments are your responsibility

 You spend most of your time on homework

Lifestyle and Social Sphere

It’s hard to be objective when it comes to comparing college vs. high school
social life because getting into a college can be too overwhelming to keep a
clear mind. Parties, adulthood, numerous new friends, tight budget, anxiety,
new everyday routine – all of these things are like an avalanche for a freshman.

High school:

 You need to get up early in the morning to be able to get to school right on time
for your first class

 You live with your parents

 You know everyone in your class

 You have a schedule assembled by your teachers and parents

 Studying at home for 2-4 hours a week might be enough – the rest of your spare
time you spend as you wish

 You try to look “cool” and often feel embarrassed

College:

 You get to know a lot of new people from different parts of the country (or the
world)

 You can stay up all night – anyway, getting up the next day will be only your
problem

 You can schedule your weeks as you want to

 You spend less time in class, but you have to study more in the dorm or in the
library

 You can visit events and parties without someone’s permission

 Everyone is too busy to pay attention to your outfits

 Establishing a friendship with your roommate is highly recommended

Teachers and Professors

It’s not a secret that most of the time in college you spend on trying to force
yourself to complete your assignment. You will also need to learn how to
contact your professor and how to find his or her office hours in a gigantic
schedule.

High school:

 Teachers closely follow the books

 Teachers help to be right on time with all of your assignments

 Teachers try to motivate and engage you

 Teachers provide you with assigned material

College:

 Professors follow the books they wrote and academic works or personal
experience

 No one will hunt you down for attendance, but you will have problems if you
skip the classes

 You are the only one who can motivate yourself – it’s not your professor’s
business

 Professors treat you like a grown-up and expect responsible and deliberate
behavior from you

Food
Food is almost the last thing a student thinks about when imagining studying in
college. But it’s a very significant issue which almost in all cases requires basic
cooking skills.

High school:

 Your parents provide you with healthy dishes

 You can eat in a school cafeteria during a school year

 You rarely or never cook for yourself

College:

Just find something more nutritious than a pack of chips. These Tricks for
Cooking Healthy College Meals on a Budget can help you.

make an overall comparison of student life in high school and college.

Schooling is a very important aspect in our lives and one must go through many
steps to higher education; the most important steps in society today, are high
school and college.

Although high school and college aim for the same goal, which is acquiring an
education and graduating, the demands, expectations, and social atmosphere
extremely contrast. However, after going to high school for four years, college
is definitely a step up. There are similarities, but at the same time more
differences. Both college and high school are very important for a student
because everyone in this era has to achieve a good education for his or her
future. Most colleges have a format of instruction that is nearly identical to that
which is used in most high schools. Namely, an instructor stands at the head of
the class and lectures, while students listen and take notes. Class interaction is
also generally very similar in high school and college. Students are encouraged
to ask questions and the instructor does his or her best to supply the best
answers.

And that is another area where high school and college are very similar. For the
most part, quizzes and tests are given to ascertain to what degree the students
know and understand material that has been presented in class and in the
textbooks. Also, the coursework itself is virtually identical to that which is used
in high school; text books are used that describe concepts or point out dates or
other facts that are deemed important, and students read their textbooks and
study them because the information contained in them is usually what will be
found on the tests.
There are also other similarities that most students will find quite apparent in
their social life. For instance, there is a considerable amount of dating that goes
on in college, just as there is in high school and there are dances, but not the
formal kind you would find in high school. Also, there are generally cliques that
develop and dissipate just as there are in high school, and athletes, especially
those on the football team also get a lot more attention from everyone else, just
like in high school. Likewise, many clubs and sports are organized in college
and high school.Students can choose some of their favorite clubs to participate.
Furthermore, students can make friends with the classmates, just like in high
school.

The first difference is homework. In High School most teachers will assign you
to turn in your homework late if you give them excuses. In contrast, in college if
you give your professor one of these excuses, you do not have another
opportunity to submit your late homework, and the credit will not be given.
Besides, the attendance polices of high school and college is different.

In high school, the teachers are always on you about attendance; that is, if you
miss too many days, you can fail, so if you are not in class, they want to know
the reason of absence; in addition, they probably will call the parents or send the
notification to the parents and let them know that you were not in class. On the
contrary, in College the teachers do not care whether or not you are in class; it
means that if you are not there, you are going to get a failing grade, so you have
to be responsible to succeed. It is up to you. Therefore, many people will feel
they have more freedom in college than high school. One difference between
both is the types of schedules students have. In high school, the class meeting of
one subject is five days in a week. By contrast, the meeting of one course is two
or three times in a week. In high school most students begin at 8:00am and end
at 3:00pm.

In contrast, in college the student chooses the schedule. College students can
start in the morning, afternoon or night and end whenever the time they
choose. In most high schools, students don’t have free hours; however, in
college students could have free hours. The last difference between high school
and college is the amount of students that attend it and the reason why. Around
800 students attend high school. On the other hand, more than 1000 students
attend college.
More people go to college than in high school because a lot of people when they
finish high school want to study for a career. The reason people go to high
school is to have a good education and go to college. The reason people go to
college is to have a bachelor’s degree and to learn more.Conclusively, even
though high school and college have their differences but they are both
important because it is good to learn and have knowledge. Another reason why
both are important is that education is important for a future of a person
although high school students can be more disciplined than college students.

Teachers in high school teach the students the responsibility by making them to
do their homework and monitoring their attendance whereas college students
are expected to have it. As a result, in my opinion, I prefer high school because
I need more attention and be a disciplined person for my education.

High schools and universities play typical roles of the entire education system in
Vietnam. In fact, there are some differences between high schools and colleges
that help students know how to decide to continue futher study or start working.
According to each distinctive features, there are three main aspects need to
discuss: applying method, relationships, and students' attitude.

To begin with, the teaching technique is the most easy point to distinguish
high shools and colleges. On one hand, teachers and students in high schools
totally follow the offical schedules and textbooks. In that way, teachers must
take huge responsibility of helping, even enforcing students to have good
knowledge and students try their best to do what teachers told them to do.
Generally, it is a one- sided technique, teachers give information to students and
they just have to do those work. On the other hand, universities focus on
interactive and self-study technique. That gives students right to show their
opinions and get the feedback also. Teachers play a different role, they are
instructors who offer guidance, resources, and feedback for the anwers students
aks them. Then students have to do the rest on their own. It seems that this way
is more open and flexible than the way of high schools using.

Next, relationships also have huge differences. Most students study high
schools at their hometown, so their friends are tend to be very familiar and close
to them. For instance, a girl has just finished secondary school then moves on
high school properly makes friends with people she has known before in
secondary school. In contrast, universities include a wide range of different
students from different places, so it is much easier to adapt this change and
make friends with strange students. Manybe it would be hard in the first time,
but everything new starts take time and that also gives students chances to
overcome problems as well.

Last but not least is about attitude. Due to the feature of high schools structure
that focus mainly on rules, students mostly are enforced to do he tasks by other
people, such as their parents, siblings, teachers, etc. As a result, they have to do
their best to accomplish all the give work unwillingly. Their main thought when
they do those work is an obligation. Nevertheless, students in universities have
more choices and more responsibilities as well. They not only have right to
manage their lives on their own but also take care of themselves and set goals as
well as commit to complete it on time. The more choices or rights students
have, the more responsibilities they must take.

In conclusion, the teaching and learning mothod, connection, and awareness are
three proninent features that differ between high schools and universities. In
near future, to adapt the creative and productive trend of the world, high schools
may apply universities' style and help more students develop themselves more
logically and effectively.
