A Case Study Report
Executive Summary
This thorough study's main goal is to carefully evaluate significant issues like
traffic and speeding on JMAMES's streets. With this investigation, we aim to find
solutions to improve safety within the school premises. This in-depth investigation offers
helpful insights into the behavior and dynamics of traffic flow close to the school by
providing a detailed analysis of the precise position, velocity, and acceleration of each
vehicle as it travels through a school zone.
1. Measuring the length of the road in front of the entrance gate where traffic passes
2. . 2. Recording a video capturing the entire span of the road we measured, making it our reference
video for calculating vehicle speeds.
3. 3. Timing each vehicle's journey from the starting point to the endpoint.
4. 4. Employing the distance over time formula to calculate the speed of each vehicle. A total of 1479
different kinds of vehicles passed in an hour. Motorcycles had the highest average speed at 9.87 meters
per second, followed by tricycles at 6.27 meters per second, and bicycles at 5.35 meters per second. Cars
maintained an average speed of 5 meters per second, while trucks moved at an average speed of 6.29
meters per second
Case Evaluation
The study was conducted on October 4, 2023, at 6:30 AM, in front of Juan M.
Alberto Memorial Elementary School (JMAMES). The observers conducted a 1-hour-
long observation on the road in front of the entrance gate of JMAMES, where traffic
passes before the start of the school’s morning classes. After carefully monitoring the
traffic flow, the observers noticed a significant contrast in traffic jams before and after
the school's flag ceremony, which commences at 7:30 in the morning. In the early
hours, the roads were relatively clear; however, a noticeable increase in traffic began to
occur as students began arriving at school between 7:00 and 7:30, indicating the start of
the morning rush hour. This shift from a smoother to a more congested roadway shows
the effect of the school schedule on local traffic patterns.
Furthermore, 146 cars moving at an average speed of 5 meters per second were
also observed, contributing to the traffic jams. Three trucks also passed through at a
speed of 6.29 meters per second. The wide range of vehicles passing by, each with its
own speed and characteristics, added to the dynamic and chaotic atmosphere of the
area during the said hour.
Proposed Solution
There are several solutions for this case that can aid and improve the issue and
problem at hand. For instance, by installing speed humps and visible crosswalks in the
vicinity of Juan M. Alberto Memorial School (JMAMES). A proposal about an education
and awareness campaign where a comprehensive campaign targeting parents and
students at this school will be launched may help. Studies have consistently shown that
the presence of speed humps leads to a decrease in speeding around school zones.
Visible crosswalks also ensure that pedestrians, especially students, are easily
seen by drivers, ensuring their safety when crossing the road. We might convince
drivers to slow down and be more cautious with this option. It also prioritizes the safety
of students and promotes responsible driving behavior. This campaign should include
information about the necessity of adhering to speed limits and traffic rules near the
school. Moreover, implementing an education and awareness campaign for parents and
students at this school holds significant potential for enhancing traffic safety. Such
campaigns have a proven track record of positively influencing behavior and
encouraging adherence to speed limits and traffic rules. Moreover, active parental
involvement serves as a powerful role model, reinforcing the importance of safe traffic
practices. Educated students, equipped with knowledge about traffic risks, are more
likely to take proactive measures to safeguard themselves. This collective effort fosters
a sense of community responsibility for school zone safety, resulting in a lasting impact.
Informed parents and students are more likely to comply with traffic laws, ensuring
secure and orderly traffic. Ultimately, implementing these solutions and campaigns at
JMAMES presents a comprehensive approach to cultivating responsible and cautious
behavior in the vicinity and ensuring the safety of the students at this school.
Conclusion
Overall, the rapid and continuous urban development around the school over
recent years has unquestionably led to a significant surge in traffic jams within our
streets. This unsettling problem has become a source of great concern, affecting not
only the safety and well-being of our students during their daily commutes but also
placing our dedicated staff members in potentially hazardous situations. Given this
situation, it is a must that immediate and decisive action be taken to address these
pressing issues, with the primary goal of ensuring the security and peace of mind of
everyone associated with our school community.
Implementation
For example, the introduction of highly visible crosswalks and signage at the
school's entrance is crucial. Rather than using traditional paint, agencies and officials
should consider using thermoplastic tape, which enhances visibility and allows drivers to
identify pedestrians even from a distance. Additionally, parents can play a significant
role in influencing their children by demonstrating and instructing them on the proper
way to cross the road and adhere to traffic enforcer instructions.
Through these strategies, we aim to reduce the risks to students' lives and
ensure a safe environment. The successful implementation of these measures will not
only prevent accidents and injuries but also alleviate the concerns of both students and
their parents when crossing the road.
