Context clues are hints that help learners understand the meaning of new or unfamiliar words within a
sentence, paragraph, or passage. Getting the meaning of an unknown word through its use is an easy way of
building a vocabulary. In some other way, giving an example or description makes it easier to understand the
meaning of unfamiliar words in the sentence.
One of the several types of context clues is exemplification or description clues.
Exemplification/description clues – use examples or descriptions to help the reader understand the unknown
word or explain its meaning.
Words like including, such as, and for example, point out example clues.
Examples:

SCIENCE 4
Adaptation of animals enables them to survive in their environment. These characteristics fall into
three main categories: body parts, body coverings and behavior. Any or all of these types of adaptations play a
critical role in the survival of an animal.
Adaptation can be either physical or behavioral. A physical adaptation is some type of structural
modification made to a part of the body. A behavioral adaptation is something an animal does -how it acts-
usually in response to some type of external stimulus. When you look at an animal, you usually can see some
of its adaptations-like what it is able to eat, how it moves, or how it may protect itself. Different animals have
many different ways of trying to stay alive. Their adaptations are matched to their way of surviving.
Animals have body structures that help them adapt to land and in water.
Dogs live on land. A dog’s body is covered with hair or fur, which protects its whole body from the
weather conditions on land. It has four legs and feet which it uses for walking, running and doing other
movements. It has sharp teeth that it uses to bite bone and tear meat off the food it eats.
Carabaos, cows and goats live on land. They have four legs that can used for walking. They have horns
that they use to ward off their enemies. They have flat teeth called molars, which they used to chew and grind
food.
Birds live among the branches of the trees that grow on land. A bird has wings used for flying. It has
beak used for picking up foods. Its feathers for keeping its body warm. Its claws are for holding in branches.
Fishes live in water. The fish has fins and tails used for swimming and for balance. It has also gills used
for breathing and scales to protect its body.
Turtles can live both on land and in water. A turtle has webbed feet that enable it to swim in water and
crawl on land. It has a beaklike mouth and a jaw that it uses to bite, tear and chew its food. Its body is covered
with a carapace or a hard shell, which protects the turtle from predators.
Shrimp and lobster are covered with outside skeleton or exoskeleton for protection. They use their
jointed legs as paddles to swim. While other animals like clams and mussels are covered with shells also for
protection.
Crabs have hard claws called pincers. They use these to protect themselves from their attackers and
also for getting and eating food.
There are some animals that have wings but they cannot fly high. Instead they use their feet to move
on land. Examples are chicken and duck. They use their strong beak and jaw to catch their food and swallow it.
Their bodies are covered with feathers for their protection.
Animals that do not have legs use their body to move. Earthworms have tiny hair called setae that help
them in moving. Snakes use its abdominal belly for crawling or sliding. Snakes have flexible jaws that can be
unhinged and fangs that curve backward. They use these for holding and swallowing animals such as mice and
rabbits.
Many animals have the color of the environment they live in. Some animals protect themselves
against their enemies through protective coloration called camouflage. This adaptation allows some animals
to blend with their surroundings. Other animals imitate the shapes, smell, tastes, color or even the sounds of
other animals. This behavior is called mimicry.
