13
CHANGING THE HEAT NUMBER

There are two ways to control the heat number:  or .
In  mode the measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II automatically increment the
number after each measurement and in  mode, the operator should use the UP and
DOWN keys in order to manually increment the number of the heat.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II can operate in two basic modes,

programmable through the parameter  (reading mode). In continuous mode the
temperature value is continuously displayed on the instrument. The signal can come from
the wired input (), or from the wireless pole 0 () or pole 1
(). By pressing the UP Key the display will toggle between the temperature
applied to the instrument / wireless device and the environment temperature taken.
In  (liquid metal bath immersion) mode, the instrument front panel lamps guide the
operator and the bath temperature is set using the window concept (see picture 10).

• Green lamp: Will light up when the sensor is connected to the instrument or to a
wireless pole to indicate that the reading is ready to be taken, or after a measurement
when the temperature of the sensor drops below the value set in the parameter 
(reset temperature). If it doesn’t turn on after a sensor has been connected, repeat the
connection process. If the green lamp remains OFF, the sensor or the pole plus
compensation cable are damaged.

• Yellow lamp: When immersing the sensor in the bath, the green lamp should turn
OFF and yellow lamp should light up. The time the yellow lamp remains ON depends on
the bath temperature measuring and also on the parameter > . When =
 (window) the measurement will last the time programmed in the parameter 
(measurement time) and the acquired temperature will be the more stable value that fits
the measurent window (see below). If the parameter =  (first), as soon as the
temperature matchs the programmed window, the measurement is finished. It can occur
before the measurement time be elapsed (this option saves the pole life). When the
parameter =  or = , the measurement will last the measurement
time and only the parameter window time is considered. It does not matter if the acquired
point surpass the parameter window span in degrees, the instrument will always show
the temperature with the lowest deviation found. When =  is selected, the
temperature and also the deviation found will be showed alternately on the instrument
display.
The parameter  (Yellow light temperature) set the temperature that the yellow
lamp will light up and the reading starts.
The value of the parameter  should be higher than the value of the parameter 
(Temperature reset).

• Red lamp: When the measuring is over, the yellow lamp turns OFF and the red
lamp should light up to indicate that the bath temperature process is concluded. After a
few seconds the red lamp will turn OFF and the bath temperature will be displayed.

One picture of the measuring window concept can be found in the next page.

MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENT MELT-THERM* II – Operational Manual

15
The curve in picture 9 shows the response of a thermocouple in function of time when
immersed in a liquid metal bath. Initially the temperature increases quickly then stabilizes on
a clearly steady level which is the temperature of the liquid metal bath. The measurement
instrument MELT-THERM* II determines the temperature through an algorithm where the
temperature value is determined by successive comparisons of the temperature points
obtained against preset limits.

The measuring window size  x  goes through all the data points acquired until all
window points meet the following condition:

(AVERAGE - )  Tn  (AVERAGE + )

•AVERAGE: Window’s average temperature

•Tn: Each of the window temperature points
•: Window span in Fahrenheit (F) degrees (configurable parameter)
that is, any window temperature point should be within the interval AVERAGE -  and
AVERAGE + .

If any temperature point occur outside the conditions previously set, the instrument will
display dashes "- - - -" to indicate that the limits are very tight or the measurement has been
unstable. Parameter  should be decreased or parameter  should be increased only
if the window is too tight.
These parameters are directly correlated with the instrument’s level of accuracy. The larger
the , the larger will be the number of points that must meet the conditions described
above and the value found will be more accurate. The smaller the , the smaller margin
for the temperature points variation relative to the average will be allowed and the
temperature value will be more accurate.
Note that there should be a compromise between the desired level of accuracy and the
readings loss rate, because as we have seen the instrument will display an error if the points
obtained fail to meet the level of accuracy dictated by the parameters  and .

The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II is ready to take a measurement in the green

light. A decimal point in the last digit of the display indicates that the next measurement will
be done in wireless mode using pole 0, if there are two decimal points, one in the
penultimate and one in the last digit of the display, the next measurement will be done in
wireless mode using pole 1:

Pole 0 Pole 1
CALIBRATION

The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II is calibrated with 32 mV, and applying the
equivalent of 1200° C for type S thermocouple (11,947 mV) discounting the environment
temperature (cold junction compensation).
INPUT SENSOR TYPE
PARAMETER S
 32 mV

16
MAN-MACHINE INTERFACE CALIBRATION

To start the calibration, set the instrument in continuous mode (  >  =  or 
or ).
To access the instrument calibration mode hold UP key for five seconds. The instrument will
display the options  and , select the desired mode of input: cable or air (wireless).
Use the flow below to navigate throught the calibration steps:

Picture 10: Man-machine interface calibration

MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENT MELT-THERM* II – Operational Manual

17
Send 32 mV using copper wires in the input of the mini black box (air calibration) or in the
instrument input (wired calibration), where pin 1 = (+) and pin 3 = (-). If there are two wireless
poles, keep one of them turned off during the air calibration.
To calibrate the cold junction compensation use a compensated cable: copper (+) and alloy
11 (-) and apply 1200° C (type S) subtracting the environment temperature.
Example: Environment temperature = 25° C, mV1200 – mV25 (11,947 – 0,142) = 11,805
mV.
To calibrate the analog output connect a multimeter in the analog output (female 4 pins
connector where pin 1 (-) and pin 2 (+)). Change the numbers in the display until the
multimeter show the correct value for the selected scale (4 mA or 20 mA).

String Editor SER1: To send data from the measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II to
the level 2 is necessary to configure a data string which will carry all the information.
The string should have a specific format, so the customer’s equipment (computer or PLC)
can recognize it.
There is a “String Editor” inside the measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II software
which helps the user to build this string.
This string will be used only if the parameter  or  in the menu is equal “”

The field “Variables” is used to insert the variables in the string.

To insert a new variable it is necessary to define the variable, the format (number of
digits) and the type of decimal symbol (“,” for Brazil and “.” for US).

See below a list of variables that the system is able to send:

TMP = Temperature
DAT = Date
HOR = Hour
HTN = Heat Number
PLC = Place
MTR = Measurement Test or Real
CHA = Channel

The string is composed of the variables and many different control characters that
are defined by the customer.

31
The control characters or variables starts with the character “underline”.
Example: _002 = ASCII control character STX = 2 decimals.
_TMP[####] = variable for temperature with 4 digits, where _TMP is the ID
and [####] is the format.

These will be replaced for their real values when the frame is sent.
_002 = replaced for a byte
_TMP[####] = replaced for the real value of temperature (exemple: 1550).

All the frame characters that are not contemplated in the previous example are
transmitted in its original ASCII format.

FRAME = _002 SETOR1 TEMP: _TMP[####] HORA: _HOR{HH:mm:ss]

RECEIVED = STX SETOR1 TEMP: 1550 HORA: 04:30:45

NOTE: All variables are inserted throught the string editor, if the keyboard is
used the format of the variable should be respected.

The control characters ASCII can only be inserted using the field ASCII. The ASCII
characters we call “printed” can be inserted using the keyboard or using the field
ASCII.

The field READ reads the frame that is already in the memory of the parameter 
and shows it in the string editor screen

The field SEND sends the frame created using the screen string editor to the
parameter 

The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II has 3 pre-defined strings that can

also be used:

<CR> = “carriage return”
<LF> = “line feed”
<STX> = “Start of transmission” _002
<ETX> = “End of transmission” _003

String Editor ETH2: This screen has the same function of the previous screen but this is
linked to the frame of the optional serial (Ethernet) port.
