PRECAUTIONS
• The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II must be installed in a place free from the
influence of intense electromagnetic fields as well as direct sunlight.
• The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II is supplied with 90 ~ 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz.
MOUNTING
• The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II is directly wall mounted with four screws,
as described below:
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
POWER SUPPLY
• Power supply connector is located on the bottom right side of the instrument.
The output for remote signal lights repeats the indicator lamps status. It includes three dry
contact type of 6 Amp @ 24 VDC / 120 VAC capacity which is configured as normally
opened.
This is a serial, asynchronous type, optically isolated output which sends an electrical signal
to the ECIL MET TEC* Scoreboard, model DC-2000.
RS-232c standard, optically isolated, no-parity output with one stop bit and a programmable
baud rate of 110 to 115200 bauds
Note: Ethernet and 4/20 mA are optional outputs and should be requested according to the customer
needs.
If 4/20 mA is not requested, a second scoreboard output will be installed in its place.
These parameters refer to the input sensor used to measure the temperature.

MAN-MACHINE INTERFACE
By pressing PROG key, the instrument shows the first menu - . Use the UP and DOWN
keys to navigate through the options of the menu. By pressing PROG key again it will
access the menu.
To select another menu: use the UP and DOWN keys to navigate through the parameters
until you find the option and press PROG key again.
To change a value of a parameter: With the display showing the desired parameter press
PROG key, select the desired value using the UP and DOWN keys and press PROG to
confirm the change.
To exit the parameter display/change mode, select option ESC and press PROG key.
There are two ways to control the heat number: or .
In mode the measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II automatically increment the
number after each measurement and in mode, the operator should use the UP and
DOWN keys in order to manually increment the number of the heat.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
• Green lamp: Will light up when the sensor is connected to the instrument or to a
wireless pole to indicate that the reading is ready to be taken, or after a measurement
when the temperature of the sensor drops below the value set in the parameter
(reset temperature). If it doesn’t turn on after a sensor has been connected, repeat the
connection process. If the green lamp remains OFF, the sensor or the pole plus
compensation cable are damaged.
• Yellow lamp: When immersing the sensor in the bath, the green lamp should turn
OFF and yellow lamp should light up. The time the yellow lamp remains ON depends on
the bath temperature measuring and also on the parameter > . When =
(window) the measurement will last the time programmed in the parameter
(measurement time) and the acquired temperature will be the more stable value that fits
the measurent window (see below). If the parameter = (first), as soon as the
temperature matchs the programmed window, the measurement is finished. It can occur
before the measurement time be elapsed (this option saves the pole life). When the
parameter = or = , the measurement will last the measurement
time and only the parameter window time is considered. It does not matter if the acquired
point surpass the parameter window span in degrees, the instrument will always show
the temperature with the lowest deviation found. When = is selected, the
temperature and also the deviation found will be showed alternately on the instrument
display.
The parameter (Yellow light temperature) set the temperature that the yellow
lamp will light up and the reading starts.
The value of the parameter should be higher than the value of the parameter
(Temperature reset).
• Red lamp: When the measuring is over, the yellow lamp turns OFF and the red
lamp should light up to indicate that the bath temperature process is concluded. After a
few seconds the red lamp will turn OFF and the bath temperature will be displayed.
One picture of the measuring window concept can be found in the next page.

The measuring window size x goes through all the data points acquired until all
window points meet the following condition:
If any temperature point occur outside the conditions previously set, the instrument will
display dashes "- - - -" to indicate that the limits are very tight or the measurement has been
unstable. Parameter should be decreased or parameter should be increased only
if the window is too tight.
These parameters are directly correlated with the instrument’s level of accuracy. The larger
the , the larger will be the number of points that must meet the conditions described
above and the value found will be more accurate. The smaller the , the smaller margin
for the temperature points variation relative to the average will be allowed and the
temperature value will be more accurate.
Note that there should be a compromise between the desired level of accuracy and the
readings loss rate, because as we have seen the instrument will display an error if the points
obtained fail to meet the level of accuracy dictated by the parameters and .

To access the instrument calibration mode hold UP key for five seconds. The instrument will
display the options and , select the desired mode of input: cable or air (wireless).
Use the flow below to navigate throught the calibration steps:
The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II can be set to communicate with the mini
black box. For that, check if the black box and the instrument are set to operate in the same
channel.
To check the channel of the Mini Black Box, remove the 4 screws of the face plate.
Remove the face plate carefuly and look for the dip switch:
Switch number “1” indicates the pole number and the switches 2, 3 and 4 are used to set the
channel number.
The picture below shows the dip switch positions and its respective channel:

The measurement instrument MELT-THERM* II has a software where you can configure or
just access the parameters of the instrument.
To install it, double click the file setup_MeltThermW_0.2.exe that is located on the CD
provided with the instrument.
Plug the USB wireless link box and your computer will start the process to install the drivers
Click Browse and look for the the folder that contains the driver
Program Firmware: This option is used to update the firmware of the unit through the main
serial port:
Connect the USB – SERIAL converter on the computer, the serial cable between the
converter and the instrument and access the menu File, option Program Firmware.
Hit the button “select File” and select the version of the firmware that will be programmed.
Note: Do NOT stop the process while programming the firmware, it can
damage the unit.

MTR = Measurement Test or Real
CHA = Channel
The string is composed of the variables and many different control characters that
are defined by the customer.
MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENT MELT-THERM* II – Operational Manual
31
The control characters or variables starts with the character “underline”.
Example: _002 = ASCII control character STX = 2 decimals.
_TMP[####] = variable for temperature with 4 digits, where _TMP is the ID
and [####] is the format.
These will be replaced for their real values when the frame is sent.
_002 = replaced for a byte
_TMP[####] = replaced for the real value of temperature (exemple: 1550).
All the frame characters that are not contemplated in the previous example are
transmitted in its original ASCII format.
NOTE: All variables are inserted throught the string editor, if the keyboard is
used the format of the variable should be respected.
The control characters ASCII can only be inserted using the field ASCII. The ASCII
characters we call “printed” can be inserted using the keyboard or using the field
ASCII.
The field READ reads the frame that is already in the memory of the parameter
and shows it in the string editor screen
The field SEND sends the frame created using the screen string editor to the
parameter
