Course Objective
To study the characteristics of pavement materials including soil, aggregate, bitumen, cement, bitumen mixtures, cement
concrete. To analyse the proportion of ingredients and their suitability for mix design of bituminous mixtures and cement
concrete. To study the recent advances in pavement material. To study the techniques for construction of flexible and rigid
pavement and their quality control.

Bitumen sources and manufacturing, Bitumen constituents, structure and Rheology, Mechanical and
engineering properties of bitumen, Tests on bitumen, Emulsions - Properties, types, modifications,
Durability of bitumen, Adhesion of bitumen, Modified bitumen.
Bituminous Mix
Bituminous Mixes: Desirable properties of mixes, Design of bituminous mixes, Tests on bituminous
mixes, Fillers, Theory of fillers and specifications.
Constituents and their requirements, Physical, plastic and structural properties of concrete, Factors
influencing mix design, Design of concrete mixes.
5 Road Construction 9 hr 20 %
Bituminous road construction procedures and specifications, Quality control requirements. Concrete
Road construction: Construction methods, Quality control requirements, Joints in cement concrete
pavements, Reinforced cement concrete roadconstruction.
