2005 – 2006
SCENARIO
The Challenge:
You are a web design firm who has decided to expand into online business databases!
You want to be the #1 database solution specialist in the region. You have seen the need
for a department that designs databases which integrate with your company’s existing
online companies’ web pages. You are responsible only for the database design. Other
departments in your company will do the integration. To showcase your new department
and what it can do, you and your associates need to design a system for an online
business of your choice. The other departments will be responsible for the integration
and web design. Your next project begins in January, so you need to finish it by 02
January 2006.
Project Summary:
You and your team will research and select an existing online business. You will identify
the company’s database and business needs, and then create a conceptual data model
to support these needs. Create a presentation of your solution in MS PowerPoint 2000
format. Remember, the file size can be no greater the 1 MB.
Sample:
Below is a sample business (yours will be much more sophisticated and well
researched).
(“Join our mailing list today and we will keep you up-to-date on all the NEW
and EXCITING products in the world of Tennis, as well as let you know about
all our GREAT SPECIALS.”)
A portion of the purchase price of certain products goes toward Breast Cancer
Research, and they need to track this, also. Since their business is online, they
need to offer an online order interface with shopping cart and checkout functions.
They also need to retain customer information for shipping and billing. They
accept purchase orders from schools and sports teams, credit cards from other
customers, and checks or money orders. However, they only accept credit cards
when ordering online. They also have a phone ordering process which allows
the use of the other payment methods.

Overall Process:
1. Choose the business. Maybe you or a family member works at this company, or
maybe it’s a company that interests you. Get permission to interview someone in the
business. You may do e-mail interviews if the company is not local. Explain what you
are doing and why.
2. Research the type of business you’ve chosen. Read articles and surf the web,
interview owners/managers/workers of a similar business. Try to understand the
challenges faced by this type of business.
3. Interview at least one employee who manages or works for the online business. You
can interview the owner or other employees. E-mailed interviews are one way to
contact online businesses not in your locality. Document all interviews in your
references section. If your project is a finalist, the Oracle Academy staff may contact
your interviewee.
Special Notes:
• Focus on identifying the company’s business needs and creating the ERD. If this
business already has a database that meets some of these needs, you will not
be penalized.
