Royal Enfield
A Brief History
1891 - In November 1891, entrepreneurs Bob Walker Smith and Albert Eadie buy George
Townsend & Co. of Hunt End, Redditch. Townsend’s is a well-respected needle manufacturer of
almost 50 years standing which has recently begun manufacturing bicycles.
1893 - The duo win a contract to supply precision parts to the Royal Small Arms Factory of Enfield,
Middlesex. To celebrate this prestigious order, they rename their undertaking the Enfield
Manufacturing Company Ltd. and call their first Bob Walker Smith designed bicycle, the Enfield.
The following year, their bicycles are renamed Royal Enfields and the trademark ‘Made Like A
Gun’ is introduced.
1898 - Bob Walker Smith designs the company’s first motorised vehicle. Known as a quadricycle,
it is built around two sturdy bicycle frames and uses a proprietary 1 1/2 hp De Dion engine. The
company finalises its trading name as The Enfield Cycle Co. Ltd., a name it is to use for the
following 70 years.
1900 - Royal Enfield delves into motorsport when one of its quadricycles enters the inaugural 1000
Mile Trial. Following a torturous cross-country route from London to Edinburgh and back, the
event does much to convince the British public of the viability of motorized transport.
1901 - The first Royal Enfield motorcycle is produced. Designed by Bob Walker Smith and
Frenchman Jules Gobiet, it is launched at the Stanley Cycle Show in London. The 1 1/2 hp engine
is mounted in front of the steering head and the rear wheel driven by a long rawhide belt.
And since then their contribution to the automobile industry has been endless.

7. Interceptor 650 - The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 first made its debut back in 2018 and
became an instant success. While in the last five years, it remained largely unchanged, the
company has now bestowed a host of updates to this retro motorcycle. The 2023 Royal
Enfield Interceptor 650 finally gets alloy wheels, tubeless tyres and more features.
Features –
a. Alloy wheels and tubeless tyres: The biggest update for the Interceptor 650 is the addition
of new alloy wheels and tubeless CEAT Zoom Cruz tyres. Now, one can easily do cross-
country road trips on this motorcycle without worrying about punctures ruining your
experience.
b. Design and colour shades: While the design of this retro motorcycle remains unchanged,
the company is offering new colour shades which enhance its visual appeal. The Interceptor
650 is offered in seven colours. They are Black Ray, Barcelona Blue, Black Pearl, Sunset
Strip, Cali Green, Canyon Red and Mark 2.
c. Apart from the minor nip and tuck, Royal Enfield has also added some new features in the
Interceptor which have been borrowed from the flagship Super Meteor 650. This includes
an all-LED headlamp, a USB charger, rotary aluminium switch gears along with adjustable
brake & clutch levers and handlebar grips.
d. Instrument cluster: While Royal Enfield’s latest updates certainly amplify the charm of
the Interceptor 650, there exist a few areas which could have been improved. One of them
is the instrument cluster. To be honest, I love the analogue dials but the MID (multi-
information display) should have been updated to show additional information such as a
gear-position indicator and clock.
e. Footpegs and seat: The Interceptor 650 offers great ergonomics and one can easily do long
rides on this motorcycle comfortably but only after replacing its seat with a touring version
which RE sells as an accessory. Its stock seat is terrible and so is the positioning of the
footpegs which always hit your legs when you put your feet down or while reversing the
motorcycle. Also, it’s disappointing that the company has still not fixed the fuel lid with
the tank in one of its most expensive motorcycles.
Features –
a. LED Headlamp - The headlamp combines old-school aesthetics with modern LED lights
for increased visibility.
b. Cast Alloy Wheels - Striking cast alloy wheels on the blacked-out variants come with
tubeless tyres, giving you peace of mind even on long rides.

improved grip and feel.

with an air/oil-cooled parallel twin configuration. The 648cc engine offers 47 horsepower
at 7150 RPM and a maximum of 52 Nm of torque at 5250 RPM. A smooth throttle response
throughout the rev range ensures sufficient power to make light work of the city traffic or
carve up the corners.
e. Tried and Tested Suspension - Finely-tuned suspension with ‘piggy-back’ gas-charged twin
shocks makes for an optimum blend of comfort and feel in all riding environments.
9. Himalayan 450 –
Features –
a. The half-duplex split cradle frame and long travel suspension keep you in harmony
with road, rocks, and everything in between.
b. 800mm seat height, perfectly positioned footpegs and handlebars reduce fatigue and
give you a comfortable upright riding position whether you sit or stand.

some areas where the company could improve its channel effectiveness, such as by increasing the
number of dealerships in international markets and by improving the integration between its online
and offline channels.
Areas for Improvement: While Royal Enfield has demonstrated significant strengths in its
distribution channels, there are areas where improvement is possible:

motorcycles, diversifying its product lineup to cater to a broader range of customer
preferences could enhance its channel effectiveness. The company has taken steps in this
direction with the introduction of models like the Himalayan and Meteor, but continued
innovation and diversification are essential to stay competitive.
2. International Expansion: While Royal Enfield has made inroads into international
markets, further expansion and localization efforts could be explored. Tailoring products
and marketing strategies to suit the unique preferences and requirements of different
regions can boost global sales.
3. E-commerce Optimization: While Royal Enfield offers online sales options, optimizing
its e-commerce platform for a seamless and user-friendly experience can enhance channel
effectiveness. This includes streamlining the online purchasing process, providing
comprehensive product information, and improving the website's overall user interface.
4. Dealer Training: Continuously investing in dealer training programs can further
strengthen dealer relationships. Ensuring that dealers are well-versed in the latest product
features, technologies, and market trends can lead to improved customer interactions and
sales performance.

strong distribution network, nurtured valuable dealer relationships, embraced the digital age with
a robust online presence, and prioritized customer satisfaction. These strengths have contributed
to its success in the motorcycle industry.
