Test 2 – REVIEW!

Chapter 2: Motion in One Dimension

EQUATIONS! (1-8)
VALUES FOR ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY! (m/s2 and ft/s2)
Wouldn’t hurt to also know something about converting metric units amongst
common units. Like meters<-->kilometers.

2-1 Displacement and Velocity

1. What is a frame of reference?
2. What is displacement, and how is it different from distance?
3. What is velocity, and how is it different from speed?
4. What is average velocity? How can you find it on a displacement/time
graph? How is it different from instantaneous velocity?
5. A book is moved once around the edge of a tabletop that is 1.75 m by 2.25 m.
If the book ends up at its initial position, what is its displacement? If it
completes its motion in 23 s, what is its average velocity? What is its average
speed?
6. A child is pushing a shopping cart at a speed of 1.5 m/s. How long will it take
this child to push the cart down an aisle with a length of 9.3 m?
7. An athlete swims from the north end to the south end of a 50.0 m pool in 20.0
s and makes the return trip to the starting position in 22.0 s.
a. What is the average velocity for the first half of the swim?
b. What is the average velocity for the second half of the swim?
c. What is the average velocity for the round trip?
8. A school bus takes 0.530 h to reach the school from your house. If the
average velocity of the bus is 19.0 km/h to the East, what is the
displacement?
2-2 Acceleration
9. What is acceleration? How is it similar to velocity, and how are the two
different?
10. What is average acceleration? How can you find it on a velocity/time graph?
11. A shuttle bus comes to a sudden stop to avoid hitting a dog. It accelerates
uniformly at -4.1 m/s2 as it slows from 9.0 m/s to 0.0 m/s. Find the time
interval of acceleration for the bus.
12. A treadmill runs with a velocity of -1.2 m/s and speeds up at regular intervals
during a half-hour workout. After 25 min, the treadmill has a velocity of -6.5
m/s. What is the average acceleration of the treadmill during this period?
13. In what special case is the average velocity of an object over a time interval
equal to the arithmetic average of the initial and final velocities of the object?
14. A car accelerates uniformly from rest to a speed of 6.6 m/s in 6.5 s. Find the
distance the car travels during this time.
15. A car enters the freeway with a speed of 6.4 m/s and accelerates uniformly
for 3.2 km in 3.5 min. How fast, in m/s, is the car moving after this time?
16. A motorboat accelerates uniformly from a velocity of 6.5 m/s to the west to a
velocity of 1.5 m/s to the west. If its acceleration was 2.7 m/s 2 to the east,
how far did it travel during the acceleration?
17. An aircraft has a liftoff speed of 33 m/s. What minimum constant
acceleration does this require if the aircraft is to be airborne after a take-off
run of 240 m?
18. Which item falls faster, a bowling ball or a feather? Why? What condition is
necessary to change that result?
19. If I throw an apple up in the air and catch it on its way back down, how does
its acceleration change during flight? How does its velocity change during
flight?
20. A worker drops a wrench from the top of a tower 80.0 m tall. What is the
velocity when the wrench strikes the ground?
21. Nigel accidentally drops Dory from his beak as he is rising steadily at a rate of
0.50 m/s. After 2.5 s, what is Dory’s velocity? How far below the pelican will
she be?
22. A parachutist descending at a speed of 10.0 m/s loses a shoe at an altitude of
50.0 m. When does the shoe reach the ground? What is the velocity of the
shoe just before it hits the ground? Why didn’t he tie his shoe on properly?
