2.1 Flowmeter body
Here i s t h e d e s i g n a t i o n and t h e f u n c t i o n o f d i f f e r e n t

Measuring chamber: The measuring chamber i s t h e h e a r t
o f t h i s flowmeter. It r e q u i r e s a good
accuracy a s r o t o r and vane, and i s
machined w i t h t h e utmost c a r e .
Rotor ( 1 6 ) and vane ( 1 8 ) : The r o t o r and t h e vane a c t u a l l y
perform t h e measurement o f f l u i d i n
combination w i t h t h e measuring
chamber. A s t h e f l u i d p a s s e s through
t h e measuring chamber, i t s dynamic
p r e s s u r e a c t s on t h e vane t o make it
r o t a t e together with the r o t o r .
Magnet c o u p l i n g ( 1 1 ) : The magnet c o u p l i n g i s a combina-
t i o n of a d r i v i n g magnet p l a c e d a t t h e
lower s i d e and a d r i v e n magnet p l a c e d
a t t h e upper s i d e . T h i s i s an l d e a l
l i q u i d s e a l i n g mechanism w i t h l e a s t
f r i c t i o n and i s f i l l e d w i t h t h e f l u i d
up t o t h e d r i v i n g magnet.
S i n c e t h e d r i v i n g magnet a t t h e lower
s i d e i s mounted on t h e r o t o r s h a f t ,
i t i s r o t a t e d a s t h e r o t o r t u r n s and
t h e r e f o r e t r a n s m i t s t h e r o t a t i o n of
the rotor t o outside.
Reduction g e a r t r a i n ( G ) : T h i s i s a r e d u c t i o n gear mecha-
nism which slows down t h e r o t a t i o n
t a k e n o u t by t h e magnet c o u p l i n g and
t o t r a n s m i t it t o t h e p o i n t e r and t h e
t o t a l counter.
Change g e a r ( C ) : T h i s change g e a r is a d e v i c e f o r ad2ust-
ing instrumental e r r o r s .
P o i n t e r R (34): The p o i n t i n d i c a t e s t h e t o t a l i z e d flow
r a t e t o g e t h e r w i t h d i g i t wheels.
T o t a l c o u n t e r R ( 2 1 ) : The t o t a l c o u n t e r h a s 6 f i g u r e s and
t h e d i g i t wheel of t h e lowest p o s i t i o n
p r o g r e s s e s by one s t e p as t h e p o i n t e r
makes a t u r n . After 999999, the indi-
cation returns t o 000000.
G l a s s R ( 1 4 ) : T h i s i s a r e i n f o r c e d g l a s s submitted t o a
special heat treatment.
2.2 Strainer
The i n t e r n a l s t r u c t u r e of t h e s t r a i n e r i s a s shown i n
F i g . 3. I t s main components a r e s t r a i n e r body and
s t r a i n e r , and the s t r a i n e r body i s made o f t h e s a m e
m a t e r i a l a s t h a t of t h e flowmeter body. The s t r a i n e r
c o n s i s t s of a c y l i n d r i c a l frame and w i r e gauze of
s t a i n l e s s steel wound t w i c e around it. The f l u i d p a s s e s
through t h e s t r a i n e r and, a t t h i s t i m e , t h e d u s t which
flew t o g e t h e r with t h e f l u i d e i t h e r adheres t o t h e
s t r a i n e r of accumulates a t t h e bottom of t h e s t r a i n e r body.
F o r t h e c l e a n i n g , loosen t h e t o p c o v e r and remove t h e i n -
t e r n a l p a r t s o f t h e s t r a i n e r when t h e flowmeter is o u t of
u s e i . e . when no p r e s s u r e i s a p p l i e d t o t h e s t r a i n e r .
I n c r e a s e t h e frequency of c l e a n i n g o f t h e i n s i d e of body
and t h e gauze depending on t h e t y p e o f f l u i d .
3 . Measuring p r i n c i p l e

The i n s i d e w a l l of t h e measuring chamber i s formed by t h e


a r c s o f r a d i u s R and r a d i u s r c e n t e r i n g around t h e p o i n t 0
and a curve smoothly connecting t h o s e two a r c s .
The r o t o r which t u r n s around t h e p o i n t 0 i s provided w i t h
4 o r 6 grooves depending on t h e nominal diameter of t h e
flowmeter arranged r a d i a l l y by d i v i d i n g t h e circumference of
t h e r o t o r i n equal p a r t s . I n one p a i r of grooves o p p o s i t e
t o each o t h e r , one p a i r of vanes a r e connected t o each o t h e r
by two s l i d e s h a f t s and assembled i n a way t o s l i d e i n t h e
r a d i a l d i r e c t i o n of t h e r o t o r .
T h e r e f o r e , t h e vanes make r o t a r y motions only t o g e t h e r
w i t h t h e r o t o r i n t h e i n s i d e w a l l p a r t of t h e r a d i u s R and r
b u t make both r o t a r y motions and s l i d i n g motions i n r a d i a l
d i r e c t i o n simultaneous a t t h e p a r t of t h e white l i n e connect-
i n g t h e i n s i d e w a l l of t h e r a d i u s R and r .
When t h e f l u i d flows from t h e i n l e t s i d e i n t h e d i r e c t i o n
of t h e arrow i n t o t h e measuring chamber, t h e dynamic p r e s s u r e
of t h e f l u i d a c t s on the r o t o r t o g i v e it a r o t a t i o n a l f o r c e .
I n t h a t case, t h e f l u i d i s s e n t out t o t h e discharge s i d e
w i t h t h e r o t a t i o n o f t h e r o t o r while f i l l i n g t h e space formed
by t h e p e r i p h e r a l p a r t o f t h e r o t o r and t h e two a d j a c e n t
vanes. Consequently, t h e d i s c h a r g e volume of t h e flowmeter
p e r r o t a t i o n o f r o t o r i s 4 t i m e s o r 6 times l a r g e r t h a n t h e
s a i d volume, depending on t h e number of vanes i n s t a l l e d .
T h i s r o t a t i o n of t h e r o t o r i s t a k e n o u t e i t h e r mechanically
o r e l e c t r i c a l l y t o i n d i c a t e t h e flow r a t e .

4. Handling method
4.1 I n s t a l l a t i o n posture
I n s t a l l t h i s s l i d e vane flowmeter with t h e s t r a i n e r on
t h e upstream s i d e s o t h a t t h e arrow marks molded on t h e
s i d e f a c e of t h e flowmeter and t h e s t r a i n e r may a g r e e w i t h
t h e d i r e c t i o n of flow, and w i t h good a t t e n t i o n t o t h e
following points:
1 ) I n t h e c a s e of a s t a n d a r d a r t i c l e (and u n l e s s o t h e r -
wise s p e c i f i e d ) , i n s t a l l t h e flowmeter s ~ d e w a y si n
a h o r i z o n t a l p i p i n g i . e . i n such a way t h a t t h e s c a l e
p l a t e may be s e e n from t h e l a t e r a l direction.
( I n s t a l l a t i o n of a flowmeter i n u p r l g h t p o s i t i o n
i s prohibited.)
2) If it is so specified in advance, mounting in a ver-
tical piping is also acceptable.
4.2 Selection of place of installation
Select a place which satisfied the following conditions
as much as possible for the installation of this flowmeter:
1) In a horizontal piping (mountable also in a vertical
piping if so specified)
2) Place with little vibrations
3) Place with little dust
4) Place with little humidity
5) Place protected against rain or dewdrops
6) Place with little corrosive gas
7) Place not subject to violent fluid pulsations
4.3 Installation procedure
TO install the flowmeter in a piping, screw a mating
flange in the piping, mount in the order of strainer and
flowmeter from the upstream side in the mounting posture
as described in paragraph 4.1 and tighten the both flanges
by using the attached packing, bolts and nuts.
1 1 When using the packing by applying grease on it, take
care to keep the grease from flowing inside to get into
the flowmeter. Even when the grease applied on the
packing on the upstream side flew inside, the flowmeter
body is protected against penetration of grease by
the strainer, but this protection is not 1008 sure.
If the grease on the packing between the strainer and
the flowmeter body gets inside, it may flow into the
measuring chamber and deteriorate the accuracy of
the flowmeter. Pay special attention to this point
in Installing the flowmeter.
2) In case the fluid contains a lot of dust, install an-
other strainer in the upstream. This may be a strainer
of coarse mesh but use a strainer of fine mesh
immediately before the flowmeter body.
4.4 Operating precautions
Pay attention for the following points during the use:
1 ) The range of operating flow rate of the flowmeter is
as indicated in Table 1. Take good care not to use the
flowmeter with a flow rate exceeding the maximum
allowable flow rate. If the flow rate is excessive,
replace the flowmeter with a one suitable to that flow
rate.
2 ) Remove dust from the strainer by loosening the bolt
at the bottom side of the strainer once a month or so
when the flowmeter is out of use i.e. not subject to
anv Dressure.
Note 1 : "Continuous" means a 24-hour operation a day,
"Intermittent" means an 8-hour operation a day and
"Maximum" means the instantaneous maximum allowable
flow rate.

(The above table indicates the range of standard flow
rates. For each product, the range of flow rate is
decided according to the order specifications and is
indicated on the name plate. Be sure to check the range
of flow rate given on the name plate and use your
flowmeter within that range.)
2) Only the fluid indicated on the flowmeter shall be
measured with the flowmeter.
3 ) Keep the temperature of the measured fluid within the
specified range.
4) To read the scale, put the totalized volume between
the figure of the digit wheel and the pointer of the
scale plate. For example, in a case as shown in the
drawing hereunder:

4.5 Piping precautlons


It is recommended to arrange the piping as shown in the
following drawing to continue the supply of fluid and
facilitate repair even in case the flowmeter went into
trouble.
Fig. (a) shows a case in which a bypass is used.
Usually, you keep the valve V1 open and V2 closed,
and the fluid flows through the strainer S and the
flowmeter M and the flow rate is totalized by the flow-
meter. In case the flowmeter went into trouble, you
can remove the flowmeter since the fluid flows in the
bypass if you close V1 and open V2.
Fig. (b) is a case in which two pairs of flowmeter and
strainer are installed in parallel. If you open the
valve V1 and close V2, the fluid flows through the strainer
S1 and the flowmeter MI, and the flow rate is totalized
by the flowmeter MI. If, in case of a trouble with the
flowmeter MI, you close V1 and open V2, the fluid flows
through the strainer S2 and the flowmeter M2, and the
flow rate is totalized by the flowmeter M2.
4 . 6 Change of direction of flow
To change the direction of flowof the slide vane flow-
meter, it is necessary to either install or remove a
reversing gear. Therefore, either send your flowmeter
back to our factory or contact us for execution of
local works by our service technician in such a case.
Avoid installing a flowmeter of specifications for
installation in horizontal piping vertically (or vice
versa) as no accurate measurement can be expected in
such a case.
5. Troubles and repairs
Troubles of the flowmeter can be roughly divided into
those inside the measuring chamber and those with the
rotation transmitting mechanism from the rotor. For the
detection of a trouble, inspect by the following procedure
by referring to Fig. 2:

1 ) Remove the bolt ( 4 8 ) and the dial case R (121, and you
will find a gear inside. Turn this gear with your finger.
If, at this time, the pointer and the figure of the digit
wheel turn with the rotation of the gear, there is no
problem with the upper half of the flowmeter. If either
the pointer or the digit wheel does not turn, there is
a problem with the upper half. Return the flowmeter to
us for repair in such a case.
2) Next, remove the bolt ( 4 7 ) of the flowmeter body and
remove the top cover (2) by extracting it horizontally,
and you will see the lower magnet. Turn this lower magnet
with your finger. If, at this time, the magnet does not
turn smooth, there must be something wrong inside the
measuring chamber. Clean the rotor ( 1 6 ) and the measuring
chamber with a clean volatile oil and, after checking
if the vane ( 1 8 ) turns smoothly, reassemble the flowmeter
as it was before and turn the lower magnet again. If it
still does not turn, return the flowmeter to us for repair.
