What I Need to Know

This module was designed and crafted carefully for you! It was written
for you to obtain skills in tracking the path of the typhoons that enter the
Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes
the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow
the standard sequence of the course. After going through this module, you
are expected to: Trace the path of typhoons that enter the Philippine Area of
Responsibility (PAR) using a map and tracking data (S8ES-IIf-21)

Specifically, you will:

• track the path of typhoons that enter the PAR using a map
and tracking data, and
• determine whether the typhoon is within or outside the
PAR using a map and tracking data.

Lesson
Tracking Typhoon Path
1
Have you ever wondered why the Philippines is frequently visited by
typhoons? Why do you think so? How do meteorologists know that a typhoon
is about to hit our country?

Philippines is a tropical country which is located above the equator and

east to the prime meridian. It is also adjacent to one of largest bodies of water
called Pacific Ocean which greatly influence the weather of the continental
masses near to it.

Given the location of the Philippines that can receive great amount of
solar energy with abundant water supply, process of vaporization is high.
Vaporization is the process where the liquid form of water turns to gas and
reaches the atmosphere. Later on, it will condense, forming clouds from which
all forms of precipitation can result. Because of this inevitable situation, we
are likely to be hit by typhoons throughout the year. Hence, we need to be
prepared.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services

Administration (PAGASA), which is a branch of Department of Science and
Technology (DOST) is the Philippines’ national meteorological agency. It
monitors the weather occurrences in our atmosphere. But, how do PAGASA
traces the path of every typhoon that enters our country?

Before we start the thorough discussion of this topic, equip first

yourselves with some important terminologies that will be used in this
module.

Notes to the Teacher

In accomplishing the activities printed in
this module, the learner must be given
another copy to refrain from leaving
unnecessary marks in this printed material.

What’s In
Activity 1: Crossword puzzle.

Direction: Complete the 10-item crossword puzzle by filling in a word that

fits each clue.

3. A hurricane occurring especially in 1. A large landform that rises above

the region of the Philippines or the the surrounding land in a limited
China Sea area, usually in the form of a peak

phenomena in Earth’s atmosphere or south of the equator.
8. The measurement east or west of 9. A huge body of saltwater that
the Prime Meridian covers about 71 percent of the
10. A natural movement of air Earth’s surface

\ What’s New
Do you already know how to plot the given latitude and longitude using a
map? This task is just like your lesson in Mathematics about the Cartesian
Coordinate Plane. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Distinguish
latitude line from
longitude line. Latitude
lines are imaginary
horizontal line that
measures the distance
north and south from
the equator while
longitude lines are
imaginary vertical line
that measure the
distance east and west
from the prime
meridian.

Since the Philippines is

located above the
equator and in the Figure 2. Image of the globe showing the equator, prime
eastern side of the meridian, latitude, and longitude lines

the world.

Step 2: Locate the given latitude

and longitude of the PAR and mark it with a dot on the spot where the given
latitude and longitude intersect.

Are you ready for the activity? Let’s do this!

12
Activity 2.1 Let’s Plot and Connect the Dots!

Direction: Plot the given latitude-longitude points using the grid below. Mark
a dot on the spot where the latitude and longitude points intersect.
Afterwards, label each dot and connect them all. Use another sheet to perform
this activity. Use ruler and pencil to help you. Point A is already done for you.

What Is It
The Philippine Area of Responsibility and its Coordinates
The Philippines is an
archipelagic country which is
surrounded by huge bodies of water
like the Pacific Ocean in the east,
West Philippine Sea in the
northwest, and Celebes Sea at the
South. It is also a tropical country
which is situated above the equator
that receives direct heat from the
sun. Given its location, the
Philippines is prone to tropical
cyclones or “bagyo”. Because of the
frequent visit of typhoons in our
Figure 5. The Philippine Area of Responsibility country, we must always be ready
in the circumstances brought with

it.

It is the role of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and

Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), a branch of Department of
Science and Technology (DOST) to deliver reliable and relevant weather-
related information and to keep track on the incoming weather disturbances
like typhoons. But how does PAGASA determine whether a tropical cyclone is
about to enter the PAR? The following coordinates are the exact
dimensions of PAR which are bounded by longitude and latitude.

14
Once the coordinates are plotted, this is how the PAR looks like in a map grid.

15
What’s More
Activity 4.1 Is it In or Out?

Directions: Track the typhoon’s path by plotting the given coordinates on the
given map grid. Determine whether the typhoon is within or outside the PAR.

Is it inside or
Typhoon Latitude Longitude outside the PAR?
Inside Outside
1 260 North 1150 East
2 200 North 1230 East
3 70 North 1270 East
4 180 North 1180 East
5 210 North 1190 East

16
What I Have Learned
• The Philippines is surrounded by huge bodies of water like the
Pacific Ocean in the east, West Philippine Sea in the northwest,
and Celebes Sea at the South.
• PAGASA delivers reliable and relevant weather-related
information and keep track on the incoming weather
disturbances like typhoons.
• The Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), is an area in the
Northwestern Pacific enclosing the Philippines, Palau, Taiwan
and Northern Tip of Borneo where PAGASA monitors the
formation, arrival, and movement of a tropical cyclone. It is
bounded by the imaginary lines connecting the following
coordinates: 5°N 115°E, 15°N 115°E, 21°N 120°E, 25°N 135°E
and 5°N 135°E.
• Tracking the typhoon’s path will determine whether it is inside
or outside the PAR.
