Jesse Owens

James Cleveland Owens was born on September 12th, 1913, in Oakville, Alabama. He was the
youngest of ten children, Life in the South was very difficult for black people, and Jesse´s
family war very poor. When he was nine years old, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio.
They hoped that life would be better in the North. When his teacher asked for his name at is
new school, she didn´t understand him because of his southern accent: at the time everyone
called him J.C., but she thought he said “Jesse”. From then on everyone called him Jesse
Owens. As a boy, Jesse had different jobs in his free time to help his family. He also loved to
run. One of the coaches at his school, Charles Riley, wanted to help Jesse to become a better
runner. He trained with Jesse before school because Jesse had to go to his job after school.
Charles helped Jesse in many was and was a very important person in Jesse´s life. Jesse
started to set world records in 1928, when he was only 15 years old. By the time Jesse had
finished high school, the whole country knew his name.

In 1933 Jesse started at Ohio State University. He went to class, worked at different jobs, and
he kept tunning. In 1935, Jesse set three world records in 45 minutes. Jesse was a successful
sportsman, but because of segregation, he had to live with many challenges. He was not
allowed to live on the university campus or to travel with his team. He had to eat at “black-
only” restaurants and stay I “black-only” hotels.

In 1936 Jesse came to Berlin to run the Summer Olympics. Adolf Hitler wanted to use the
Olympics to show the world that white Germans were better than other people. But Jesse
Owens won four gold medals: in the 100-meter sprint, the long jump, the 200-meter sprint and
the 400-meter relay race. Jesse was the most successful at the Summer Olympics. He was also
the first American to win four gold medals in the history of track and field at the Olympics. It
was an amazing Olympics for Jesse and for the US. In Germany, Jesse had been allowed to
stay in the same hotels as white people. Back home people celebrated Jesse and said that he
was a hero, but there was still segregation. Jesse wasn´t allowed to ride the front of the bus.
President F.D. Roosevelt never called him or invited him to the White House. And perhaps
the biggest problem was that Jesse needed to find a job, but nobody wanted to give him one.

After the Olympics, Jesse had a hard time finding a good job for many years. Later, he
became a very popular speaker. Jesse died of lung cancer in 1980, at the age of 66. He had
smoked a lot for about 35 years. After he died, many streets and parks were named after him.
He is one of the greatest sportsmen of the 20th century.
