James Cleveland Jesse Owens

James Cleveland Owens more commonly know as Jesse Owens


was more on Oakville Alabama on September 12, 1913, during racial
segregations peak. When he was nine his family of three sisters seven
brothers and there parents moved to Cleveland Ohio as part of the Great
Migration. The Great Migration, when 1.5 million African Americans left
the segregated south. (Wikipedia)
Jesse Owens became a track star for the Ohio state Buckeyes,
but still had to stay at an all-black dorm off campus! Like other Africans
in America, Owens had to stay at an all-black restraint or get carry out at
the other restaurants. Although Jesse was an amazing track athlete if his
time and is still considered great, he was not eligible for a scholarship
because of his race. Jesse Owens became an Olympic track athlete and
went to the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Germany was under the
rule Adolf Hitler at this time. (Kidzworld). These Olympics were used by
Hitler to try to tell the world that Germans were better than any other
race. At the time Hitler perceived whites as superior and Africans as
inferior. According to Albert Speer Hitler was highly annoyed by the
series or triumphs by the marvelous colored American runner Jesse
Owens Hitler was also believed to say, People whose antecedents
came from the jungle were primitive. Their physiques were stronger
those those of civilized whites and hence should be excluded from
future games, Hitler said. In Germany Owens could not stay at the same
hotels as his white counterparts. When Jesse got back in America, He
was not invited to the White House to celebrate his victories in the
Olympics. Owens was not honored for his success until Dwight D.
Eisenhower was FDR and Harry S. Truman had served their terms.
According to Jesse Owens himself, Hitler didnt snub me- it was FDR
who snubbed me. The president didnt even send me a telegram. Jesse
Owens died on March 31, 1980 he was a pack a day cigarette smoker for
35 years, and died of lung cancer. (Wikipedia & Kidzworld).
