(Autobiography)
My name is Zyra Mae Garcia. I was born on May 23, 2006 in Quezon City, Philippines.
Although my parents were born in different regions, they left for Quezon City because of career
goals, and that’s how they met and made three children. I have two brothers named John
Benedict, or JB for short, and Lester Junbert, or LJ. I am the youngest and the only daughter of
the family. My father died when I was almost 2 years old, and my mother is a High School
MAPEH teacher at Quezon City High School. I always looked up to her even though she’s short
because she continues to sustain our needs despite being alone. Our family bond grew stronger
and stronger as time went by despite all the challenges and difficulties we face everyday.
When I was 2 years old, Mom always bought CDs about alphabets and numbers after her
work and gave them to me to study. It became my routine everyday to open the TV and watch
and learn. At 4 years old, I began to go to school. My first year in nursery was fun and thrilling
to meet different kids like me. However, when we came to enroll in kindergarten level, the
teacher said I was too advanced in knowledge and should enroll in preparatory level instead. At
that time, I was not aware of what was happening, but I supposed it was good news because
mom and our helper back then was shocked at first, but overjoyed a moment later. And that’s
why all of my classmates that time are a year older than me. But, despite being the youngest in
class, I was able to acquire the top and graduate as a valedictorian. It was a short but memorable
preschool experience.
At grade school, born with an ambivert personality, it was kind of difficult for me to
make friends with peers. That’s why I have always communicated with a few close friends who
were by my side since I first entered Kamuning Elementary School. Since childhood, I have had
a thirst for knowledge and new discoveries, especially in Mathematics. However, in my 4th
grade, I began to have an interest in Science, since it was so fun and consisted of many
beginnings of life and such. I joined many school activities such as Drum & Lyre Corps.,
Badminton, Sabayang Pagbigkas, Sayawit, etc. To sum up my elementary life, I was an active
I tend to be a curious type of person and logicalize every matter. That’s not surprising
taking into account my environment. When I was in my first year as a teenager, I first dreamed
of becoming an accountant, thinking mathematics is my field and where my passion is. That
time, Math was my everything. I recalled I was once being called a human calculator.
Later on, Science conquered my thinking, but I still love math, though. With that in my
mind, I understood that my heart belongs to logic and analysis. I spent much time in my room
reading about math and science. Mother used to be a Mathematics Teacher, and she still has
some of her materials for her past lectures about mathematics. So I borrowed some of it,
including the CDs and books. I searched on the net and went to libraries to acquire some Science
materials. Learning about math and science have inspired me to pursue my desire and focus on
math and science, given that they are much related to each other. But this does not mean that I
won’t pay attention to other subjects, it’s just that I tend to focus and learn more when I am
think critically in all spheres of life; society, family, work, friendship, and others. Studying
mathematics and science is my personal way to keep track in life. I’m driven by my passion to
explore countries with a rich mathematics and science history: USA, UK, France, Italy, Greece,
Singapore, and so many others. Someday, I will visit those countries to study thoroughly not only
to improve my professional skills, but also will help to learn more about myself and people.
