SUBJECT: MTS322: Design of Machine Elements

CREDIT HOURS: 3-0

CONTACT HOURS: 3 Hours per Week

TEXT BOOKS: Mechanical Engineering Design by Joseph Edward Shigley

Latest Edition.

REFERENCE BOOKS: Fundamentals of Machine Designby Juvinall, R. C. and Marshek,

K. M. Latest Edition.

PREREQUISITE: EM 223: Mechanics of Materials

MODE OF TEACHING: Lectures and Demonstrations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to give the mechanical concept of load
and stress analysis. The concepts are further utilized to be implemented on designing of
common mechanical components such as screws, fasteners, gears, bearings, springs, welds and
shafts. Students are given the concept of optimized design for both static loading and fatigue.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course is meant to synergize forces, moments, torques, stress
and strength information to develop ability to analyze, design and/or select machine elements -
with attention to safety, reliability, and societal and fiscal aspects. Finally, the course prepares
the students to design static and dynamic machine elements such as shafts, springs, screws,
bearings and gears. The course includes numerous practical exercises and case studies.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate competency by being
able to:

1. Implementing and investigation of concepts pertaining to load and stress analysis

2. Implementation and investigation of various failure theories of both ductile and brittle
materials
3. Designing of screws, fasteners and permanent joints
4. Design and analysis of springs
5. Design of gears

6. Design of shafts and shaft loading

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:All machines designs need to be optimally designed so that
they could work to the most of their efficiency and are able to withstand the stresses applied
during operation. Each component of the machine is therefore carefully designed and analyzed
accordingly. Fasteners, welds, shafts, gears, springs and bearing form the basic components of
any machine design. Therefore correct design serves a vital role to avoid failure during
operation. Studying this subject would equip the students to achieve this aim and therefore
apply the knowledge they have earned to any mechanical design.
