4. The cost of mining, refining and transporting fossil fuel is roughly independent of the grade of fuel.
Consider that the fuel in the ground is value at ₹35/million kJ with mining and transporting costs are
₹600/ton and ₹2.5/ton-km respectively. If the price of other delivered fuel is ₹81/million kJ, find: (i)
The radius from the mine, in km, that a fuel of 32,560kJ/kg can be delivered and sold for zero profit
or loss (ii) The minimum heating value of a fuel that could be used locally. (3)

5. Suppose world carbon emission are expressed as the following product: Carbon emission =
(Population) X (Energy/person) X (Carbon/energy); If per capita energy demand increases at 1.5%
per year, fossil fuel emissions of carbon per unit of energy increase at 1.6% per year, and world
population grows at 1.2% per year. (i) How long would it take before we are emitting carbon at
twice the current rate? (ii) At that point, by what fraction would per capita energy demand have
increased? (iii) At that point, by what fraction would total energy demand have increased? (iv) If our
initial rate of carbon emission is 5X109 tons C/year and if there are 700X109 tons of carbon in the
atmosphere now. (4)
