1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. General: Submit in compliance with Division 01 Section “Submittal Procedures.”
1. Submission of submittals indicates that the Contractor has reviewed and
approved the submittals for the following.
a. Compliance with the requirements of the Contract, Drawings and Project
Manual.
b. Field measurements, field conditions and quantities.
c. Coordination with adjacent work and trades.
2. Engineer will review submittals for the following.
a. Compliance with Drawings and Project Manual requirements.
3. Incomplete submittal may be returned to the Contractor without review.
4. Architectural Woodwork Standard Requirements:
a. Submit in compliance with "Architectural Woodwork Standards, Edition 1 -
2009".
B. Product Data:
1. Submit for action. Describe the properties of items to be used in the Work.
Include the following.
a. Hardware.
C. Shop Drawings: Submit for action. Show fabrication and installation of the Work.
Include the following.
1. Location of each item, dimensioned plans and elevations, large-scale details,
attachment devices, and other components.
2. Locations and sizes of furring, blocking, and hanging strips, including concealed
blocking and reinforcing specified in other sections.
3. Locations and sizes of cutouts and holes for plumbing fixtures, faucets, soap
dispensers, hardware and other items installed in architectural woodwork.
D. Schedules: Submit the following for information.
1. Hardware Coordination: Distribute copies of actioned schedules for cabinet
hardware specified in Division 08 Section "Door Hardware" to manufacturer
E. Samples:
1. Verification: Submit for action. Furnish materials to be used with labels
indicating colors, finish characteristics, and locations of the Work. Samples will
be reviewed for color and appearance only. Furnish the following.
a. Wood Veneer: Veneer leaves representative of and selected from flitches to
be used for transparent-finished and lacquered woodwork.
b. Wood-Veneer-Faced Panel Products:
1) Transparent Finish (shop-applied): 200 mm x 250 mm, for each species
and cut. Include at least one face-veneer seam and finish one-half of face
as specified.
a) Step finish materials on sample to show and clearly define each coat.
b) Provide separate samples of unfaced panel product used for core.
c. Stone: 300 mm square for each color selected.
d. Other materials if requested. Engineer reserves the right to require samples
which will show the fabrication techniques and workmanship of component
parts before fabrication of the work proceeds.
F. Quality Assurance: Submit the following for information:
1. Certificates:
a. Certification stating that the fabricated work meets the woodwork grades
specified.
G. Closeout Submittals: Submit the following to the Employer.
1. Record documents.
A. Qualifications:
1. Contractor: Contractor is responsible for quality control of the Work.
2. Fabricator: A firm experienced in successfully producing work similar to that
indicated for this Project, with a record of successful in-service performance, and
with sufficient production capacity to produce required units without causing delay
in the Work.
3. Installer: An installer trained in the use of the materials and equipment to be
employed in the Work. Install by same firm that fabricates the Work.
B. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with all applicable requirements of the laws,
codes, ordinances and regulations of authorities having jurisdiction. Obtain
necessary approvals from all such authorities.
C. Single Source Responsibility:
1. Obtain materials from a single manufacturer for each different product required.
2. Arrange for production of architectural woodwork with sequence-matched wood
veneers by a single firm.
3. Include the veneering of wood doors in the single-firm production where veneer
matching extends across wood doors.
4. Stone: Coordinate source of stone with stone flooring and stone facing
fabricator.
D. Mockups:
1. General:
a. Use the same installation methods and materials as required for the Work.
Schedule construction so that it may be reviewed, and any necessary
adjustments made, prior to commencing fabrication of the Work. When
accepted, mockup shall serve as the standard for materials, workmanship,
and appearance throughout the Project.
2. Factory Mockup.
a. Engineer selected kitchen layouts.
3. On Site Visual Mockup:
a. Provide the mockup at location to be designated.
b. Engineer selected kitchen layouts.
c. Interior Entry / Living / Dining Room Space:
1) Provide complete mockup for each system illustrating all components
visual and not visual (ie. setting conditions) and final finish as noted on
the Residential AE 9000 Series drawings.
4. Exposed metal trim adjacent to / or part of woodwork shall be included as part of
the mockup.
2. Obtain and comply with woodwork fabricator's and Installer's coordinated advice
for optimum temperature and humidity conditions for woodwork during its storage
and installation. Do not install woodwork until these conditions have been
attained and stabilized so that woodwork will be within plus or minus 1.0 percent
of optimum moisture content from date of installation through remainder of
construction period.
B. Existing Conditions: Field measure at location of the Work prior to preparation of the
shop drawings. Include measurements of adjacent construction to which the Work
must fit. Coordinate construction to ensure that actual opening dimensions
correspond to fabricated dimensions of the Work. Allow for trimming and fitting.
1. Where field measurements cannot be made without delaying the Work,
guarantee dimensions and proceed with fabrication of products without field
measurements. Coordinate construction to ensure that actual opening
dimensions correspond to guaranteed dimensions. Allow for trimming and fitting.
2. Verify locations of concealed framing, blocking, reinforcements, and furring that
support woodwork by accurate field measurements before being enclosed.
Record measurements on final shop drawings.
B. Coordinate the work with plumbing and electrical rough-in, installation of associated
and adjacent components.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
H. Cabinet Hardware:
1. General:
a. Hardware Standard: Comply with BHMA A156.9 for items indicated by
reference to BHMA numbers or referenced to this standard.
2. Cabinet Hardware Schedule: Refer to schedule at end of this Section for cabinet
hardware required.
3. Finish:
a. Concealed Hardware: Provide manufacturer's standard finish that complies
with product class requirements of BHMA A156.9.
b. Exposed Hardware: Provide finish that complies with BHMA A156.18 for
BHMA code number indicated.
1) Satin Stainless Steel, Stainless-Steel Base: BHMA 630.
4. Cabinet Hardware Schedule: Refer to schedule at end of this Section for cabinet
hardware required.
I. Fasteners:
1. General:
a. Provide fasteners meeting the requirements of Industrial Fasteners Institute
(IFI) Standards.
b. Type, size, material and finish as required for substrate condition and proper
anchorage.
1) Provide countersunk fasteners where possible.
c. Interior: Galvanized steel.
d. Locations Subject to Moisture: Stainless steel.
2. Bolts: Hexagon head type, ASME B 18.2.1, ASTM A 307, Grade A.
3. Nuts: Hexagon head type, ASME B 18.2.2, ASTM A 563.
4. Lag Screws: Square head, ASME B 18.2.2.
5. Wood Screws: Flat head carbon steel, ASME B 18.6.1.
6. Plain Washers: Round carbon steel, ASME B 18.22.1.
7. Lock Washers: Helical, spring type carbon steel, ASME B 18.21.1.
8. Drilled-In Expansion Anchors:
a. Expansion anchors with internally threaded tubular expansion anchor and
machine bolt.
b. Basis of Design: Hilti Fastening Systems “Kwik – Bolt II” (www.hilti.com )
c. Other Manufacturers:
1) Subject to compliance with requirements, provide equal products as
determined by the Engineer.
1. Adhesives: Moisture resistant or waterproof type as best suited for the purpose
and recommended by the manufacturer for the application.
2.2 FABRICATION
A. General:
1. Comply with requirements of the “Architectural Woodwork Standards”
requirements for each type of woodwork required.
2. Wood Moisture Content: Comply with requirements of referenced quality
standard for moisture content of lumber in relation to relative humidity conditions
existing during time of fabrication and in installation areas.
3. Fabricate woodwork to dimensions, profiles, and details indicated.
4. Ease edges to radius of 1.5 mm on solid wood and panel products.
5. Complete fabrication, including assembly, finishing, and hardware application,
before shipment to Project site to maximum extent possible. Disassemble
components only as necessary for shipment and installation. Where necessary
for fitting at site, provide ample allowance for scribing, trimming, and fitting.
6. Shop-cut openings, to maximum extent possible, to receive hardware,
appliances, plumbing fixtures, electrical work, and similar items. Locate openings
C. Fabric Panels:
1. Standard: Comply with “Architectural Woodwork Standards – Section 8 Wall
Surfacing.”
a. Grade: Premium.
b. Substrate: Medium-density fiberboard. Particleboard and OSB is not allowed
on project.
E. Closet Shelving:
1. Standard: Comply with “Architectural Woodwork Standards – Section 10
Casework.”
a. Panel Product:
1) Grade: Premium.
2) Substrate: Medium-density fiberboard. Particleboard and OSB is not
allowed on project.
3) Exposed Edge: Solid wood edgeband to match veneer.
4) Wood Veneer Species:
a) Match Engineer’s samples.
5) Size: As indicated on Drawings or if not indicated, provide full length of
closet, 300 mm deep.
6) Hardware:
a) Shelf Standard and Brackets.
b) Hanger Rod with shelf assembly.
F. Stone Countertops:
1. General: Fabricate stonework in sizes, shapes and edge conditions required to
comply with requirements indicated, including details on Drawings and final shop
drawings.
a. Cut stones to produce pieces of thickness, size and shape indicated.
b. Cut and drill sinkages and holes in stones for anchors, fasteners, supports
and lifting devices as indicated or needed to set stonework securely in place;
shape beds to fit supports.
2. Standard: Comply with “Architectural Woodwork Standards – Section 11
Countertops.”
a. Grade: Premium.
3. Fixtures and Accessories: Drill holes in countertops for plumbing fittings and
soap dispensers in the shop.
4. Stone Type: Match Engineer’s samples.
PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Site Verification of Conditions: Examine and correct conditions of area to receive the
Work prior to installation.
1. Verify adequacy of backing and support framing.
2. Verify location and sizes of utility rough-in associated with work of this section.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. General:
1. Condition woodwork to average prevailing humidity conditions in installation
areas before installing.
2. Deliver concrete inserts and similar anchoring devices to be built into substrates
well in advance of time substrates are to be built.
3. Before installing architectural woodwork, examine shop-fabricated work for
completion and complete work as required, including back priming and removal
of packing.
3.3 INSTALLATION
A. General:
1. Install system in accordance with manufacturer’s printed installation instructions,
submittals, applicable industry standards, and governing regulatory requirements
for the Work.
2. Install woodwork plumb, level, true, and straight with no distortions. Shim as
required with concealed shims. Install to a tolerance of 3 mm in 2400 mm for
plumb and level (including tops) and with no variations in flushness of adjoining
surfaces.
3. Scribe and cut woodwork to fit adjoining work and refinish cut surfaces or repair
damaged finish at cuts.
4. Provide cutouts for item to be built into or passing through cabinets and work
surfaces. Before making cutouts, drill pilot holes at corners.
a. Seal edge of field installed cutouts as specified for factory installed cutouts
under Factory Finish in Part 2 of this Section.
5. Anchor woodwork to anchors or blocking built in or directly attached to
substrates. Secure to grounds, stripping and blocking with countersunk,
concealed fasteners and blind nailing as required for a complete installation.
Except where prefinished matching fastener heads are required, use fine
finishing nails for exposed nailing, countersunk and filled flush with woodwork
and matching final finish where transparent finish is indicated.
6. Fire-Retardant Treated Wood: Handle, store, and install fire- retardant-treated
wood to comply with recommendations of chemical treatment manufacturer
including those for adhesives which are used to install woodwork.
B. Standard:
D. Cabinets:
1. Install without distortion so that doors and drawers will fit openings properly and
are accurately aligned.
2. Adjust hardware to center doors and drawers in openings and to provide
unencumbered operation. Complete the installation of hardware and accessory
items as indicated.
3. Install cabinets with no more than 3 mm in 2400 mm sag, bow, or other variation
from a straight line.
4. Maintain veneer sequence matching (if required) of casework with transparent
finish.
E. Shelving:
1. Complete the assembly of units and install in the areas indicated, including
hardware and accessories as indicated.
2. Support Spacing: Space at no more than 750 mm on center and no more than
200 mm from end of any shelf. Do not rely on drawing graphics to determine
quantity of standards.
F. Countertops:
1. Anchor securely to base units and other support systems as indicated.
2. Caulk space between backsplash and wall with specified sealant.
3. Install countertops with no more than 3 mm in 2400 mm sag, bow, or other
variation from a straight line.
4. Secure backsplashes to tops with concealed metal brackets at 400 mm on
center.
3.4 ADJUSTING
A. Repair damaged and defective woodwork wherever possible to eliminate defects
functionally and visually; where not possible to repair properly, replace woodwork.
Adjust joinery for uniform appearance.
B. Clean lubricate and adjust hardware.
3.5 CLEANING
A. At the end of each work day, remove unused materials, debris and containers from
the site.
B. Clean woodwork on exposed and semi-exposed surfaces. Touch-up shop-applied
finishes to restore damaged or soiled areas.
3.6 PROTECTION
A. Protect the Work so it will not deteriorate or be damaged. Remove protection at time
of completion.

e. Basis of Design: Subject to compliance with requirements, the design is
based on the following.

determined by the Engineer.
2) In order to be considered as equals, a written request accompanied by all
appropriate product data, samples, test results, and certifications must be
submitted to the Engineer. Products deemed to be acceptable will be
included by Engineer’s written response.
4. Drawer Face Height: Greater than 242 mm
a. Cabinet profile set:
1) 50 kg capacity.
