The British imperialism :
In the 16th Century, Britain began to build its empire through a process called
the " imperialism which is a policy of extending a country's rule and power
through colonization, use of military force, or other means . so, it began to
colonize lands and regions beyond its borders especially which can provide
Britain with valuable materials such as metals as well as Natural resources and
among the areas that it colonized are North America, Australia, New
Zealand, Asia and Africa, as well as small parts of Central and South America.
thus , the Britain became the largest empire in the world had ever seen.
Tea drinking :
the first things will be asked by most Brits is "would you like a cup of tea ?"
- tea is the favorite beverage for brits
And 63% of people in uk drink tea everyday and many people love drinking it
so much as well ad they can't imagine living without it.
but what is the story behind the British love for tea ?
In 1662, the story begins when King Charles II married Portuguese Princess
Catherine . Before their marriage, the king offered Princess Catherine tea as a
dowry, along with money and treasures as well. After marriage, Queen
Catherine began drinking a cup of tea every day and in her meetings as well.
Since then, the British have adopted this habit and it has become a part of
their culture. Moreover, tea drinking has spread all over the United Kingdom.
dialects and accents :
There are many British dialects and accents. each region has her own accent ,
and each accent totally different from another . probably , we can find almost
40 accents or more.
1- received pronunciation, often called R.P . it is a standard accent which is
used in official places moreover it is characterized by it is clear and has precise
pronunciation which is anyone can understand it .
2- cockney is a the most famous British accent after “ received pronunciation”.
it emerged in the east London and the working- class Londoners use this
accent more than other regions.
3- Geordie is a another famous dialect spoken by Newcastle's people. it has its
own vocabularies and rules. for example the word " canny " means in Geordie
" good " or " "nice".
4-scouse is an accent spoken in liverpool. it's like Geordie .
5- the Yorkshire accent which is specific to Yorkshire region.
English food :
each country has its traditional dishes which are An integral part of its
culture . and here we are talking about the most famous British dishes.
1- full english breakfast : is a traditional English breakfast includes sausages ,
bacon , fried tomatoes , baked beans and buttered toast.
2- Shepherd's pie i a classic British dish made from minced lamb , covered with
mashed potatoes with cheese on the top, as well as vegetables.
3- Bangers and mash, also known as sausages and mash, is a traditional British
dish . it's a tasty combination of sausages and mashed potatoes with onion
gravy .
fish and chips :
fish and chips is the most classic traditional dish in the uk . it includes a fried
fish and French fried potatoes .
This delicious dish appeared in the United Kingdom in 1860 thanks to a Jewish
immigrant called Joseph Malin who opened a restaurant in East London and
began selling fried fish with chips. Many of the working class also began to buy
this dish because it was cheap and delicious at the same time. In the 19th
century, around 25,000 million fish and chip restaurants opened in the
country. Thus, fish and chips spread all over the United Kingdom and became a
delicious classic and a true icon of British cuisine.
Sunday roast :
what's a Sunday roast ? it is a traditional British meal. and it is a roast meat in
the oven for dinner.
what does " Sunday roast " include ? or what are the ingredients ?
it typically consists of two parts, the first one is a roasted meat which is the
main ingredient in this meal and Brits prefer usually beef but you can use meat
of chicken or lamb... And the second part is roasted potatoes . Brits typically
cook the potatoes by peel the potato and boil it until it will be partially cooked
then put it in the oven to roast it , they also add another vegetables like carrots
and peas . they also add Yorkshire pudding which is a baked pudding made
from a batter of eggs, flour, and milk or water...etc
The name "Sunday Roast" came from the tradition of Brits which is the
families and the friends gather together in order to enjoy this special meal only
on Sundays.
