Summer Reading
2023 - 2024 Class Book and
Choice Book Reading List

Hey There!!
We hope you are ready to dive into some excellent
summer reading. Honors English 8 students that
enroll at Midway Middle School and River Valley
Middle School have the same reading assignment.

You will read TWO books this summer - an ALL-

read and one Student Choice from a reading
list.
The readings will each come with a short
assignment which will be due on Monday,
August 28th. Both assignments are due on that
day.

Book 1 of 2 Honors English 8's

All Read Title - J. R. R. Tolkien's
Fellowship of the Ring
We will all read the Jrst book in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord
of the Rings trilogy. The Fellowship of the Ring is the
story of an ordinary person going to war. It is about
the comrades who go with him and whom he meets
along the way, the best friends he will ever know. It is
a tragedy about the men who can't stand the strain of
battle and break under its pressures. It is a warning
about the damage that can be done by those who
want to control and dominate other people. And it is
a heartwarming tale about brothers in arms who
willingly throw themselves into terrible danger to help
each other out.

ASSIGNMENT - As each of us reads The Fellowship

of the Ring, we will track the hero's journey on a
graphic organizer. Using the deJnitions on the Jrst
page of the handout, write a short summary of this
stage in the journey. As you write, be sure to use
complete sentences, good grammar, and all of the
conventions of good writing. The organizer can be
found here.

Book 2 of 2 Choose One from

the List
For your second book, each of us will choose ONE
book from the following:

Scythe (Neal Shusterman, 2016)

Trevor Noah: Born a Crime YA (Trevor Noah,
2016)
All the Light We Cannot See (Anthony Doerr,
2015)
Unbroken YA (Laura Hillenbrand, 2017)
The Life of Pi (Yann Martel, 2002)

ASSIGNMENT - After you have completed the book,

you will create a new handmade book jacket for the
story. This new book jacket must be completely your
design- not a copy of any past or current editions.
The book jacket should include:

an attractive illustrated cover,

a summary,
a short biography of the author,
and a few reviews from readers (ask parents
and friends to give you at least a 75-word
review)

We look forward to seeing you

soon!
