I. Learning Competency
• Analyze the forms and functions of social organizations

II. Key Concepts

The previous lesson explained social content and context on its process of
social group. In relation to the new lesson, we analyze the following function of social
organizations.
To understand and analyzing the social organization, we must understand
first the social structure. Social structure is the framework of the organization; to
analyze its structure is like analyzing the anatomy of a living organism. The structure
provides forms and patterns for coordinating and conducting the activities the entire
system. Roles and Positions are the building blocks of organizational structure in
this sense.

Role refers to a set of expectations for behavior defining how a person within an
organization is to function.
Common Example: Boss and Worker, Parent and Child, and Teacher and Student.
To analyze the above common example, the role of Teacher and student are
accountable for the performance of one another in the field. Parent and child
whatever the behavior or action it has may be affected the role of one another inside
their home or in within the community.
Position is a location within the organization where the task or function is
determined by that organization's purpose.
Example: Senator, School Principal, Manager, Waitress, chief surgeon
To analyse the position, school principal in school for example, carries with it a set
of behavioral norms or rules for performing the role, such as those concerning
manage the school, supervise their teacher and over-all in charge the task in the
school. This performance of the principal is defining a set of expectation the behavior
of the position.
What is an organization?
It is a hierarchical network of positions each carrying specific role expectations and
a formally or informally defined level of status.
Example:

Director

Manager Manager
(Team A) (Team B)

worker 1 worker 3
worker 2

The above example is a kind of pyramidal hierarchy which the top position of
organization is the director and the bottom line is the worker.
To analyse this structure, the role of director is the head of organization. He/she
controls the operation of organization. The manager is the second ranking position
and he/she does whatever task gives his/her director to associate or manage the
organization. In the bottom which the worker who voluntarily or involuntarily are
mechanism of the organization.in other words, workers may follow the leaders who’s
on top to work and survive for the seek of organization he/she belongs.

What is social organization?

Meriam-Webster dictionary defined as the system of relationships between persons
and among groups with regard to the division of activity and functional mutual
obligations within society.
Family is the basic example of simple basic organization with hierarchical network
where the role and position of father and mother are on top, and the members are
their children. According to the quotes “family is the basic unit of society”.
Clan
The members of a clan are supposed to be the descendants of common ancestors.
They usually bear common surname. They are usually found among primitive people
and members act through the guidance of a chieftain.
They are associated through common social, religious, and cultural ceremonies.
Member’s practice exogamy: they do not marry a person belonging to the same clan.
All members worship a totem or a symbolic object like cow, bull, bird etc.
Tribe
A tribe is a wider social organization than clan and has been defined as “a social
group of a simple kind, and members of which speak a common dialect, have a
common government and act together for such common purpose as welfare.” Tribe
is usually formed after a stronger clan subordinates a weaker one.
Tribe has a government with a tribal chief as its head. It is organized for military
purposes and has a common dialect and language. Though devoid of blood
relationship, a tribe maintains solidarity among its members.
Community
One way of organizing individuals on secular lines is through formation of
communities and associations. A community is defined as “the total organization of
social life within a limited area.” A community is a self-sufficient group based on
common life. The area of a community may range from narrow to very broad (even
global) limits.

Political organizations
Human groups have developed ways in which public decision-making, leadership,
maintenance of social cohesion and order, protection of group rights, and safety from
external threats are handled.
