Oceans and lakes have much in common, but they are also quite
different. Both are bodies of water, but oceans are very large bodies of salt
water, while lakes are much smaller bodies of fresh water. Lakes are usually
surrounded by land, while oceans are what surround continents. Both have
plants and animals living in them. The ocean is home to the largest animals

time for a vacation, both will make a great place to visit and enjoy.

F. Problem-Solution
38. Piñatas are a tradition at birthday parties in my family. The piñata is a papier-
mâché form, often in the shape of a burro that is colorful on the outside and
filled with surprises inside. The outside of the piñata is covered with brightly-
colored short strips of paper to suggest a burro’s hair. Inside the piñata is a
hollow space filled with small presents such as yo-yo’s, balls, twirlers, and
other trinkets. The piñata is hung by a string from the ceiling at the beginning
of the party. Near the end of the party, guests take turns hitting the piñata
with a stick, eagerly waiting for the papier-mâché to split and the presents to
come tumbling down.
39. Earthquakes can be classified into three main types based on the plate
movements. The first type is known as a convergent boundary. Also known as
destructive plate boundary, this type of earthquake happens when two
tectonic plates move toward one another and collide. The second type of
earthquake is called the divergent boundary. During this type of earthquake
two plates are forced to move away from each other resulting in a rift zone.
The last type is called the conservative plate boundary or transform fault.
During this type of earthquake, two tectonic plates slide past one another.
40. Before the girls got to the porch, I heard their laughter crackling and popping
like pine logs in a cooking stove. I suppose my lifelong paranoia was born in
those cold, molasses-slow minutes. They came finally to stand on the ground
in front of Momma. At first, they pretended seriousness. Then one of them
wrapped her right arm in the crook of her left, pushed out her mouth and
started to hum. I realized that was aping my grandmother.
41. An avalanche is a huge snow slide that rushes down the side of a mountain,
carrying large trees, rocks and other debris in its path. Avalanches are similar
to landslides but can be more dangerous and destructive. Avalanches can
occur when huge amounts of new snow fall on layers of snow and ice that
have become unstable because of melting. They can also be triggered by
explosions or earthquakes.
42. When it comes to petting, dogs and cats react in different ways. Dogs may
enjoy prolonged petting, but cats, on the other hand, may tire of too much
attention. For example, my German Shepard can lay on my lap for hours with
me rubbing her head. However, my Persian cat has a small window of enjoying
petting before biting my hand or running away. As you can see through my
examples, most dogs enjoy prolonged affection more than cats. This works to
demonstrate the more social and people pleasing nature of dogs. You can also
see the difference in social behaviors through the way these two animals react
to other animals.
43. Last week we installed a kitty door so that our cat could come and go as she
pleases. Unfortunately, we ran into a problem. Our cat was afraid to use the
kitty door. We tried pushing her through, and that caused her to be even more
afraid. The kitty door was dark, and she couldn’t see what was on the other
side. The first step we took in solving this problem was taping the kitty door
open. After a couple of days, she was confidently coming and going through
the open door. However, when we removed the tape and closed the door, once
again, she would not go through. They say you catch more bees with honey, so

we decided to use food as bait. We would sit next to the kitty door with a can
of wet food and click the top of the can. When kitty came through the closed
door, we would open the can and feed her. It took five days of doing this to
make her unafraid of using the kitty door. Now we have just one last problem:
our kitty controls our lives.
