What is product design?


It consists of the planning, development and creation of a commercial offer aimed
at solving a market need. This process starts from the study of customers to the
final production of goods, whether they are physical items, services or even
software.

In other words, the product design process consists of imagining, conceptualizing,


testing, iterating and refining a product so that it is ready for its end user. These
processes include:
• Create an image of what the product should look like
• Plan drafts
• Test the product
• Repeat several times to correct it efficiently
• Refine until a final product is created

What is a product?
Products can either be physical things that can be found inside a store. The
product is the end result of a product designer's work.

Why product design is relevant


• Because it involves an analysis that allows to understand the real needs of the
market and how the product helps to solve their problems.
• It draws on key aspects for company growth, such as customer and user
experience, marketing and sales.
• It helps to determine the functions and materials, according to the target
audience.
• It allows better decisions to be made (such as raw material selection, for
example), thanks to a testing stage that shows errors or opportunities before
going to market.

Factors influencing product design


1. Target audience
For a product to become a solution that really works, it has to solve the problems
faced by a certain group of people. That's why it's important to define your buyer
personas: who your ideal customers are, where they are in their lives, what
aspirations they have, how they typically behave.

Your buyer persona is the basis for you to choose everything: its appearance, the
primary functions, your marketing strategy to promote it, its cost, even the quantity
or availability of your service. This step is something you cannot leave for later.
2. The experts who will join your team
This means you'll need to analyze how much you know about the edges of the
project you're creating. Part of talent is finding the perfect team for the perfect
product, and that may be one of your most important tasks.

3. Metrics that will indicate the success of product design


Measuring scope and results are two key elements to verify that the right decisions
have been made. Also to correct if they are not. By defining them in advance, you
concentrate efforts and resources efficiently, avoiding unnecessary expenses.

4. Time to market
By this we mean the time it could take to market the product. By having these
timelines in mind you are more prepared to make sure that it happens at the right
time and that you are taking advantage of different elements that play in your favor,
such as seasonality, context or lack of options that your proposal could satisfy.

5. Distribution channels
This is defined when you know your target audience, because it allows you to
understand whether it is necessary to have a physical store, make online sales,
look for an ally to work as an intermediary, sell retail or wholesale, and other
aspects that end up influencing the production process.

Product design methods


1. SCAMPER
This method helps to find an idea, or the seed of one, quickly. It consists of
creating proposals based on solutions that already exist, and that respond to
concepts mentioned in the name of the method:

• Substitute, as when one material is used in place of another.


• Combine, which can happen by joining two products into one.
• Adapt, which occurs when something that already exists is optimized with an
adjustment.
• Modify, as when the design of an item changes completely.
• Put it to another use, which gives a new life to a product that was previously
intended for specific solutions.
• Eliminate, which refers to removing any part (or process) that interferes with the
product, even if it is an intermediary.
• Reinvest revenues to make product improvements.
2. SCRUM
This method was created to make teamwork easier when developing products. It is
a good tool for the creation of digital products, because it is made to coordinate
teams in groups of 3 or 4 people to divide their work into parts. Each one must be
done in the shortest time possible and a record is kept, to identify successes and
errors that are optimized in the following iterations.

3. Design thinking
A 5-step process, design thinking takes empathy as its starting point. In other
words, it first makes sure that it understands the problem it is trying to solve and
then moves on to definition, i.e., it takes the most important aspects of the previous
step and retains what adds value. This is followed by ideation, a stage in which
solutions are proposed and those that will become prototypes and enter the testing
phase are chosen.

4. Design Sprint
It is based on feedback from users and experts to refine details, functions and
other aspects. It is a good tool to create prototypes, mainly; and it focuses on the
process occurring in a maximum of 5 days.

Product design software


1. Sketch
This software helps to create interfaces that can then be used in the application,
website and other digital products. It allows you to collaborate with the team, make
prototypes and refine the graphic details, either with your own elements or those in
your library, compatible with other industry tools and plugins. It also allows you to
create a workspace where all collaborators can see the progress and make
suggestions or improvements in real time.
2. Teamcenter
Developed by Siemens, Teamcenter is "a product lifecycle management (PLM)
system", so the entire product design process can be done from its interface. It is
intended for physical or digital products, and also gives access to complete teams
for the use of 3D designs, electronics, embedded software, documentation and
their bill of materials. You can control everything: quality, prototyping, material
costs, supply chain, manufacturing, etc.
3. Google Jamboard
It is a collaborative space when the idea process is in its early stages or in the
revision phases. The team has, practically, a blank slate where they add their
conclusions or proposals with text and images,
stickers, which are shared in Jam sessions on the device, on the web or from the
mobile application.
